Download Festival - 2016 Review

This year's Download Festival turned out to be a very wet weekend with constant downpours and thunderstorms throughout the three days, but what would 'Drownload' festival be without a little bit of rain? Thick with mud and soggy from the rain, the crowds all gathered looking for a fantastic time and with phenomenal headliners Rammstein, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden the weekend was never going to disappoint. Aside from the wrestling and the creative Zippo lighters that you could engrave in the Zippo Encore booth, as well as get hold of the limited edition Download Zippo lighter, the music line up for this year's festival was phenomenal - and we can't wait for the next Download festival already.

Download Festival - 2016 Review

Friday
There were multiple highlights throughout the weekend, and as we stocked up on burgers, we headed down to the Lemmy stage to catch one of the more out-there acts of the weekend - Babymetal. Babymetal were mesmerising as they always are, with hit songs Gimme Chocolate and Road To Resistance taking the crowd by storm. A giant circle pit opened as the Japanese J-pop/metal band took to the stage and gave a fantastically choreographed performance as always.

Killswitch Engage managed to slay the stage as they always do, even in the torrential downpour that overtook their set, as the band plunged into hit songs My Curse, Strength Of The Mind and My Last Serenade, there was nothing that they can do to disappoint. A huge crowd turned out to watch the band, even in the mudpit that the Lemmy stage gave way to.

This year the festival boasts a stellar line-up with Rammstein, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden all headlining respectively. But that's not all. With Korn, Deftones, Megadeth, Disturbed, Nightwish and many other bands taking to the stages at this year's Download Festival it is set to be a killer weekend.

In light of the unexpected and sad news of the passing of Motorhead's Lemmy earlier this year, the main stage has aptly been renamed The Lemmy Stage. Rammstein return to Download for the second year to headline on the Lemmy stage on the Friday night and many will be expecting an anarchic live performance. The band are due to be preceded by Korn and Killswitch Engage whom will be attracting veteran rock lovers in large crowds.

Five years isn't the longest we've ever had to wait for an Iron Maiden album, but it's long enough. Fans can't complain though as they are due to be presented with a whopping 92 minutes worth of music from the metal legends as they unveil 'The Book Of Souls' this Autumn. The album was recorded in Guillame Tell Studios in Paris - where they did 2000's 'Brave New World - with their usual trusty producer Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley, and while it's been ready to go for a while, they held the project back a few months to allow Bruce to recover enough to join in the celebrations.

Sonisphere 2015 Cancelled

Prodigy Metallica Iron Maiden

Bad news for metal fans today: the UK edition of Sonisphere festival at Knebworth will not go ahead this year. Sonisphere’s organisers made the announcement on its official website late on Friday (January 16th).

One of the reasons given was that there had been a struggle to put together a “good enough” line-up, though The Prodigy, Metallica and Iron Maiden had all been announced as headliners for the July 4th-6th event. Furthermore, in the increasingly crowded festival fixture list, it’s been difficult to find a weekend that doesn’t clash with other events.

Remembering Clive Burr: Iron Maiden Drummer From 1979 To 1982

Iron Maiden

Clive Burr died at the age of 56 in his sleep on March 12th, triggering a deluge of tributes, kind words and obituaries in honour of him, and the impact he had on Iron Maiden – one of the most important rock bands of all time.

“He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out,’ said Steve Harris, the band’s founder and bass player,” Iron Maiden say in a statement. “This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.” Burr was born in East Ham, London, and was brought up in Manor Park in the capital’s East End. At the height of his fame, though, he was asked to leave the band, and no one knew why. One purported reason was his supposed ‘overindulgence’ in the rock lifestyle; a claim he vehemently denied. “I was too upset to feel angry about it,” he recalled. “We were like schoolkids [on tour] in America. We’d never been there before and it opened our eyes. There was a lot of parties, and girls were throwing themselves at us. We’d never experienced anything like it."

Iron Maiden Pay Tribute To Original Drummer Clive Burr, Dead At 56

Iron Maiden

Sad news for Iron Maiden and fans of the band from the late 70’s and early 80’s, the British metal legends’ former drummer Clive Burr has sadly passed away. He was just 56.

Formerly in the metal band Samson, Burr joined Bruce Dickinson and the rest in 1979 and played on the group’s first three albums, 1980’s Iron Maiden, 1981’s Killers and 1982’s The Number Of The Beast – the band’s first number one album in the UK. However he left the group later in that same year, though remained on good enough terms with the group so that, when he was sadly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, they rallied around and formed the Clive Burr MS Trust Fund to help raise money for his living costs. When things go too bad financially for the drummer they played several benefit concerts in his honour.

Clive Burr Dies: Original Iron Maiden Drummer Has Passed Away

Iron Maiden

Clive Burr, the former Iron Maiden drummer has died at his London home, Sky News report. The drummer, who was considered by many to be the driving force behind the band’s original pioneering metal sound, has passed away at the age of 56. Burr played on Iron Maiden’s first three albums, Iron Maiden, Killers and The Number of the Beast. Burr had been suffering from multiple sclerosis but is said to have “died peacefully in his sleep.”

The band’s founding bass player Steve Harris, said “He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out.” His former band mate then added “This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time." Burr was a member of Iron Maiden between 1979 and 1982, leaving after the band’s third album topped the UK album chart.

Rolling Stone magazine described Burr’s contribution as a “major ingredient” to the band’s sound, which, in their infancy, was notable for introducing the fast tempo of punk music to the heavy metal genre. Though the band were a hit in the UK, it wasn’t until after Burr left that they found success Stateside and developed to become a huge international act.

'Iron Maiden Beer' Announced By Bruce Dickinson

Iron Maiden

Rocking out, flying airplanes and now making beer, there’s nothing Bruce Dickinson and the Iron Maiden guys can’t do. The seminal British metallers revealed plans to launch their own ‘Trooper’ beer yesterday (March 12, 2013), teaming up with the Robinson’s brewery in Stockport, north west England to cultivate the flavours of their new drink.

In a press release posted on the Iron Maiden website, the group’s head honcho Dickinson commented "This collaboration - between two huge British success stories - makes for an ideal and natural match; Bruce Dickinson loves his real ale, and Robinsons Brewery is one of Britain’s most established and respected independent family-owned brewers." Continuing it added "I'm a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinsons are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is Trooper. I love it."
