On the 45th anniversary of his legendary set at the venue, the organisers of the Isle of Wight Festival 2015 have honoured Jimi Hendrix by attempting to break a world record.

Amid the fun of four massive headliners over three nights – The Black Keys and The Prodigy sharing the slot on Friday, Blur on Saturday and Fleetwood Mac on Sunday – the IoW chiefs had been encouraging the 50,000 festival-goers to buy cut-out Jimi Hendrix masks in order raise money for its nominated charity WellChild.

At precisely 3:30pm on the final day of the festival, people were invited to their masks on while the main stage beamed footage from Hendrix’s actual 1970 performance, including his scintillating interpretation of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’, the recorded version of which is often cited as the greatest cover version of all time.

The organisers were hoping to break the world record for “most people wearing costume masks at once”, the success or failure of which has not yet been officially announced.

John Giddings, the IoW Festival’s organiser, had said before the weekend: “Jimi's impact on the island and to popular music cannot be underestimated. His inspiration lives on today and is present each year in the artists performing this year.”

“We wanted to celebrate the 45th anniversary by doing something fun with everyone at the festival this year,” he said of the record attempt. “By buying a Jimi mask people can not only take part in this special celebration but also help raise money for our partner charity WellChild.”

Back in 1970, Hendrix made what turned out to be his last ever UK festival performance at the Isle of Wight, in front of a mind-boggling crowd of 600,000 revellers. He died in a London hotel room in September that year, aged 27.
