Jack Black On His Teenage Drug Use & His Brother’s Tragic Death

Jack Black

Jack Black, in a recent interview, discussed his substance abuse during his teenage years. The comedy actor may play light-hearted roles on-screen, in films such as School of Rock and Gulliver’s Travels, but he’s certainly wrestled with his fair share of demons.

The D Train Review

Excellent

A provocative drama wrapped in the skin of an adult sex comedy, this sharply written and performed movie is hugely entertaining even as it grapples with some big issues. The central themes here are notions of celebrity and sexuality, neither of which is nearly as clear-cut as the audience or characters think they are. And the script allows actors like Jack Black and James Marsden to do what they do best while undermining their usual personas with some edgy shadings.

Black plays Dan, the self-proclaimed leader of his high school class' 20-year reunion. He has always felt invisible, and is annoyed that he gets no respect from the reunion committee. Then he spots hot classmate Oliver (Marsden) in a TV advert and hatches a plan to increase his popularity by convincing Oliver to attend the reunion. He lies to his boss (Jeffrey Tambor) about needing to go to Los Angeles on business, and he gets carried away as the openly bisexual Oliver shows him the partying lifestyle, taking things far beyond where he thought his limits were. Back home, he can't admit any of this to his sharp wife (Kathryn Hahn) and begins to lose touch with his smart teen son (Russell Posner). Then when Oliver turns up, things get even more precarious.

Filmmakers Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul get everyone into this mess in the usual ways, with snappy dialogue, goofy antics and rather a lot of humiliating embarrassment for poor Dan. Then they do something interesting: they refuse to play it safe, taking a surprisingly complex journey through questions about everything from peer pressure and family dynamics to the illusion of fame and the unspoken spectrum of sexuality. So even though the characters aren't always likeable, and even though all of them make some questionable choices, they're unusually sympathetic because the astute script and performances make them thoroughly recognisable.

Nobody really wants to attend their school reunion. Nobody, except for maybe Dan Landsman (Jack Black), who is the self-appointed head of the school reunion committee. After slogging through days of rejections, Dan is beginning to believe that no one is going to come to the 20th Anniversary reunion for their high school - that is, until he turns on the television and sees Oliver Lawless (James Marsden). Lawless, a once popular student, is now a relatively successful actor, and Dan believes that getting him to attend the reunion will convince everyone else to come along. But when he meets up with Lawless for the first time in twenty years, something goes wrong. Lawless is going to attend the reunion, and it is on track to be a massive success, but Dan no longer feels so good about it.

We've had our fingers crossed for a sequel to Richard Linklater's musical movie since it was announced as 'School of Rock 2: America Rocks' back in 2008, but then it started to look like we weren't going to see rock teacher Dewey Finn return to our screens after all. Never fear though, as now the original story is coming to Broadway towards the end of 2015 with previews kicking off in November.

Sex Tape Review

OK

Although it presents itself as a rude sex comedy, this movie is actually a prudish exercise in simplistic moralising. A glut of sweary dialog and leery innuendo is certainly no replacement for properly adult-oriented humour. At least Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel are relatively reliable as actors who can keep their characters likeable, but even they struggle with the trite material. And as a cowriter, Segel only has himself to blame.

Diaz and Segel play Annie and Jay, a couple whose courtship consisted mainly of having lots of sex in as many unusual places as they could think of. So it's hardly surprising that marriage and parenthood feel like a disappointment. They never have time for sex now, so when Annie's blog improbably wins a lucrative publishing deal, they celebrate by leaving the kids with the grandparents for a sexy night on their own. To get things going, they decide to film themselves on their iPad, oblivious to the fact that the video is synchronised to all of the iPads they've given to their family, friends and clients over the last few months. So now they're in a mad dash to find them all and delete their sex tape.

Honestly, does anyone actually give iPads to everyone they know? This is such a naggingly stupid premise that it leaves everything that happens feeling utterly inane, especially their contrived ignorance about how the Cloud works. Diaz and Segel bring enough charm to the film to keep the audience watching, playing even the lamest jokes as if they're hilarious. And as they race between their friends and family members, each side actor gets their cameo-style moment in which they can try to steal the show. Although even here director Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher) hedges away from the genuine gross-out comedy, which leaves first-rate comical performers like Corddry, Lowe and Black looking a bit lost.

Nickelodeon Planning 'School Of Rock' TV Series

Jack Black

Whilst it's not yet known if Black will return to repise his role as penniless musician turned eccentric music teacher Dewey Finn, original director Richard Linklater will be involved, fresh off the success off his latest film, the masterpiece Boyhood. Yep, who knew that the director of 2014's independent masterpiece was also responsible for creating the song 'Math is a Wonderful Thing'? Producer Scott Rudin is also on board. Thirteen episodes have been commissioned and the series is expected to premiere in Spring 2015.

Jack Black
Black was hugely memorable in the 2003 film

"School of Rock is one of those great movies that always felt quintessentially Nickelodeon in its tone and humor, and we jumped at the opportunity to partner with Paramount Television and bring it to life as a TV series," said Russell Hicks, president of content and development at Nick.

Jack Black Will Play R.L. Stine In 'Goosebumps' Movie

Jack Black

There’s a special place in the heart of fright loving 90’s kids reserved for R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps novels. Anyone who even slightly delved into the series can probably remember some of the spooky tales,  Night of the Living Dummy or The Haunted Mask spring to mind. In one of the series spin-off books you could even choose your own ending, how many of us managed to do that without taking a sneaky peek at both options? But now Goosebumps is coming back, this time it's on the big screen as Jack Black is heading up a movie based on R.L. Stine’s works. Thing is, from what we’ve found out, the Goosebumps movie might be unexpectedly weird, as writers seem to have found the oddest possible way to bring Stine’s stories to life. Read on if you dare but be warned you can’t chose your own ending here.

Jack BlackJack Black will star in the Goosebumps movie

In the 90s Goosebumps was not such a successful novel series, it was also a television show with episodes based on stories from the books. For years now the idea of a film version of Goosebumps had been talked about, a one point Tim Burton was even said to be involved. But last year the Goosebumps movie went from being the subject of internet chatter to a reality when it was announced that Gulliver's Travels director Rob Letterman had signed on to the project. The next big move was when Jack Black was secured to take the lead role after Darren Lemke had begun penning the script. The next major casting announcement was of Odeya Rush who’s about to star alongside Jeff Bridges in The Giver. Rush will be joined by Dylan Minnette who has guested on 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.', rounding off the film’s main cast. Helping with the writing is the multitalented Mike White who’s perhaps best remembered for the short-lived HBO series ‘Enlightened’ which he wrote, directed and starred in.

Jay and Annie once had a thriving sexual relationship, but now they've been together for ten years and have two children, things are going a little stale. They haven't been properly passionate in months and its starting to take its toll on them both. In a daring move to regain that spark that attracted them to each other in the first place, Annie suggests that she and Jay make a sex tape. The decide to film themselves trying out a variety of different positions in a 3 hour long romp captured on Jay's iPad. Unfortunately, they failed to notice as they were sleeping it off that the video had been uploaded to his Cloud account and thus shared with the entire public. With their professional reputations at risk if their bosses get hold of the film, they make an attempt to steal their iPads while simultaneously trying to find a way to get the tape 'out of the cloud'.

'Sex Tape' is a remarkable comedy about the tragic but true tales of modern technology - and how it frequently betrays us. It has been directed by Golden Globe nominated Jake Kasdan ('Bad Teacher', 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story') and written by Kate Angelo ('The Back-up Plan'), and is due to be released in the UK on September 5th 2014.

Zach Braff Donald Faison Kate Hudson Dustin Hoffman Jack Black

Zach Braff may have won the award for the finest celebrity photobombing incident of all time, after an image of him cheekily smiling into the camera during a photo shoot for some newlyweds went viral this week. The image was taken in Times Square, New York City, where the newly wedded couple were having their photo taken on one of the crosswalks, only for Braff to walk past at the perfect moment and, if anything, make the wedding photo a million times better.

Zach Braff
Braff, pictured with his pug, has caused an internet storm with the image

The goofy actor was noticed by wedding photographer Sascha Reinking, who upon discovering the image took to Twitter to call out the actor. On Thursday (21 Nov.) the photographer tweeted, "I might be mistaken but I think Zach Braff totally photobombed my newlywed couple. :) #zachbraff #scrubs #photobomb," later tweeting to Braff and congratulating him on a job well done. Braff later tweeted that the picture was "one of my best photobombs ever," and he even took to his FaceBook page to describe the photobombing incident as his "finest to date."

Bernie Review

Excellent

Richard Linklater mixes comedy, drama and documentary to tell a frankly outrageous true story, and in the process he also gives Jack Black one of his best-yet roles. Even though his character is camp and colourful, Black beautifully underplays him, channelling his normally excessive style of acting into something utterly endearing. And while the story is packed with tragedy, Linklater still manages to keep us laughing.

Black plays Bernie, a well-loved member of the community in small-town Carthage, Texas. Bernie is the local mortician, and he has a reputation for caring for the families of the deceased. Mainly the widows. Then his life takes a strange turn when he meets Marjorie (MacLaine), a cranky widow who's estranged from her family and has more money than she can spend. Now in addition to running the town theatre club and managing a local art show, Bernie is managing Marjorie's finances and traveling with her around the world. Then she rewrites her will to leave everything to him, and events take a startling turn.

The film is narrated through documentary-style interviews with the town's brutally honest residents, and only some of them are played by actors. They talk about Bernie's place in the town, and how opinion shifted when he was accused of Marjorie's murder. Knowing that Bernie was a real man, and that these events really happened, adds a spark of energy to the film that actually augments the blackly comical tone. And opposite Black, MacLaine delivers one of her strongest, snappiest turns. McConaughey is also great fun as the blustering prosecutor who's shocked that anyone in town still loves Bernie. But they all do.

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!
