The Joker, Batman’s notorious foe, is one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but they’ll always be debate over whose portrayal is the best. Some prefer Heath Ledger’s twisted take from the Dark Knight, while others opt for Jack Nicholson's more cartoonish version.

But for Zach Galifianakis, who voiced the villain in The Lego Batman Movie, no one can beat Nicholson’s portrayal in 1989’s Batman, directed by Tim Burton. For the actor, it was Nicholson’s non sequiturs that made his performance the best Galifianakis has ever seen.

Clearly retirement isn't for everyone. As much as Jack Nicholson didn't ever confirm that he had ended his acting career, it was assumed that he had indeed retired having not appeared in a movie since 2010. However, he is making a triumphant return to the big screen with Hollywood remake of 'Toni Erdmann'.

Paramount Pictures have announced that an English remake of the Oscar nominated comedy is on the way, with Jack Nicholson in the lead role opposite Kristen Wiig. A director hasn't been announced yet, but producers will include Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum, as well as the original's Maren Ade as executive producer.

Today Hollywood mourns the death of Mike Nichols, the mind behind films like The Graduate, Closer and Working Girl. Having started out his career as a comedian and later moving on to comedy, standup, directing, drama and a whole list of other film credits, Nichols could truly be called a Renaissance man of modern cinema.

Throughout his career, Nichols played with genres and characters to explore the broad range of the human condition.

He was one of the few multi-talented artists to enter the EGOT club, as Tracy Jordan would call it and win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony for his work.  Nichols frequently went from the comic to the tragic and right back again in his quest to explore all aspects of the human condition.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been surfing the celebrity world for some time now with famous faces all over the world taking the plunge in order to draw attention to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to its research. The latest stars to succumb to the cold water are Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin, fashion designer Stella McCartney and supermodel Kate Moss, with the former two joining up together to complete their nomination.

Martin and McCartney were both nominated by the singer’s estranged wife, Gwyneth Paltrow and did not seem too keen to accept their selection at first.

Fans of Stephen King will be excited to learn that he has finally penned a follow-up to his 1977 horror novel, The Shining. Entitled Doctor Sleep, the new book will return to the characters of The Shining and will focus on Dan Torrance, now a middle-aged man.

Fleeing his father's legacy, Dan eventually settles into working in a nursing home, providing comfort to the patients with his mental abilities. Dan becomes "Doctor Sleep" with the aid of a cat who can foresee the future, and he must save a 12 year-old girl from an evil travelling cult.

Despite the seemingly crippling twin concerns of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, Scottish comedian and national treasure Billy Connolly has vowed to keep on working, in what can only be described as the most determined move. Ever.

BIlly Connolly is staying positive.

A spokeswoman for the 70-year old comedian and actor said: “Billy Connolly recently underwent minor surgery in America after being diagnosed with the very early stages of prostate cancer. The operation was a total success, and Billy is fully recovered. In addition, Billy has been assessed as having the initial symptoms of Parkinson's disease, for which he is receiving the appropriate treatment.” (The Independent).

Jack Nicholson is thankfully not considering plans to retire from acting just yet, despite previous reports that he is struggling to remember lines due to increasing memory loss.

The One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest star may not have been seen in a movie since 2010 when he starred in James L. Brooks romcom How Do You Know opposite Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson, but it has been confirmed that, at the grand age of 76, he's nowhere near done with performing yet.

NBC anchor Maria Shriver has categorically revealed to E! News that the star in fact has no problems with his memory whatsoever and is still reading various scripts and preparing to get his next project underway.

It was fun, when Adrien Brody somehow won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2003. He jumped up and down, he danced around, he kissed Halle Berry. But somewhere in that auditorium, Jack Nicholson was wondering how he could possibly have been beaten.

In fairness, it was a pretty strong year for the leading actor category, which comprised of Brody for Roman Polanski's The Pianist, Nicholas Cage for Spike Jonze's Adaptation, Michael Caine for The Quiet American, the all-conquering Daniel Day-Lewis for Gangs of New York and Nichoson, for Alexander Payne's About Schmidt.

The Hollywood legend gave one of the best performances of his career as Warren Schmidt, a retiring insurance actuary who settles into a dormant life. His unfulfilling marriage to Helen, and the fact his daughter is marrying a man entirely unworthy of her (in Schmidt's eyes) only adds to his problems.

It seems that Jack Nicholson is retiring from acting. The reports stating that the actor has filmed his last movie, although yet to be confirmed by a rep or Nicholson himself, have been numerous and leave little room for doubt. RadarOnline broke the news first, saying that the 76-year-old actor was quietly leaving the business, due to “memory loss.” According to the anonymous source, cited by Radar, the actor, boasting a career, which spans five decades, now has “memory issues and can no longer remember the lines being asked of him. His memory isn’t what it used to be.”

Hopefully Nicholson will still be keeping up with Lakers games post-retirement. 

In truth, Nicholson hasn’t worked since the 2010 Reese Witherspoon starrer How Do You Know. Of course, the best strategy is always to retire at the height of one’s career and it appears that Nicholson is doing just that – even the harshest critic couldn’t honestly claim that the actor has seen any sort of decline in the past decade.

Karen Black, the actress famous for her roles in films such as Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, died yesterday (Thursday 8th August). Her husband, Stephen Eckelberry, made the announcement on his Facebook page. She passed away in a nursing facility in Santa Monica, CA after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 74 years old.

Eckelberry wrote: "it is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago." He thanked Black's friends and fans for their "prayers and love", adding "they meant so much to her as they did to me."

Just when you thought the whole ‘Jennifer Lawrence at The Oscars’ thing couldn’t get any better, along comes Jack Nicholson to make the whole thing a lot more entertaining. Lawrence was being interviewed by Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulous, after winning her Oscar, when Jack Nicholson came along to congratulate her and Lawrence ended up getting a little flirty with the Hollywood veteran.

Jay Z seems bored despite the Lakers racking up an 105-96 win over Thunder

We had to go back and double check the score of the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Los Angeles Lakers match; as we thought, the Lakers took a high scoring game 105-96, but it didn't seem to excite the bevvy of celebrities who turned up at the weekend to witness it. Jay Z, Denzel Washington and Jack Nicholson were among the stars in attendance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to watch the game, and their expressions ranged from bored, to listless, to uninterested. Which are all quite similar to be honest.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand's PR people are clearly no longer communicating, with the pair only just avoiding a potentially disastrous reunion this week. Both stars - who divorced earlier this year - attended the same Los Angeles Lakers season opener on Tuesday (October 30, 2012), though just happened to be seated at opposite sides of the court.

According to E! Online, there was no indication that the pair interacted, with Katy attending the game with her father. Comedian Brand sat between two unknown youngers, though later chatted with footballers David Beckham and Robbie Keane, who were there with Adam Levine and his girlfriend. Elsewhere, Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson looked as mischievous as ever - fittingly wearing a jack-o-lantern - and heartthrob Zac Efron also enjoyed the match courtside, which the Lakers lost to Dallas. 

Brand and Perry married in a lavish ceremony in India in October 2010, after first meeting at the MTV Video Music Awards the previous year. Cracks in their relationship circulated right from the start, and the pair split after a year of marriage. Since their divorce, Perry has dated the Florence and the Machine guitarist Rob Ackroyd and is currently with singer John Mayer.
