Jack White Releases Open Letter Over Tour Rider's Guacamole Recipe Mockery

Jack White

Jack White fires back at journalists for attacking him on his recently published tour rider in a long open letter, after the media took aim for his guacamole specifications and apparent anti-banana front. When writers at the University of Oklahoma published an amended copy of the singer's tour rider in the student paper, people were quick to brand White a 'diva' over some of his rider requests.

Jack White's 'Lazaretto' Is An Infectious Break From The Contagion Of Banality

Jack White

Jack White's latest solo album Lazaretto is now available to buy, after having streamed in full via iTunes. Named after a hospital or ship that quarantines people affected with contagious diseases, the album's title could be interpreted as a wry reference to the bad press White has attracted recently.

White felt compelled to apologise to everyone he had upset with his sharp words so the negative attention wouldn't overshadow his eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss. Though anger is apparent on the new LP, it would be a waste of time to mutter on about the artist's behaviour instead of dissecting one of the year's most arresting releases.

Critics agree: Lazaretto is "a wilder and harder work than White's solo debut from two years ago," says the NY Daily News. While NME prefers to draw comparisons between the two, excitedly describing the new record as "a second solo album that's as musically eccentric and original as its predecessor"

Jack White - Lazaretto Album Review

Modern music legend Jack White is back with his second solo album 'Lazaretto', following up 2012's 'Blunderbuss'. The former White Stripes main man has spent pretty much all of his career freshening up old style genres such as country and blues with a modern twist to bring them back into the mainstream and, listening to 'Lazaretto', it appears White isn't done with that mission just yet.

Jack White - Lazaretto Album Review

'Three Women' is an incredibly danceable song upping the giddiness for the rest of the album with upbeat piano parts that are just as exciting as any of the riffs or guitar solos on the track. The title track is brilliantly bizarre, with 8 bit elements mixed with White's sassy vocals, a fuzzy guitar solo and a fiddle piece at the end. The bridge is phenomenal, sounding like 'Game Over' on a retro video game mixed in with White mechanically singing, 'They wanna blow down in prison, they're lighting fires with the cast of the masses and like the dough I don't fall down, I'm so Detroit, I make it rise from the ashes'. The album calms down when it comes to 'Temporary Ground' which is a gentle country number with more relaxing female vocals and the fiddle being ever present, though this time more peaceful and in line with the mood of the rest of the song. 'Would You Fight For My Love' takes a slight return to the strange with spaghetti western guitar bends that tie in well with an emotional piano-led ballad. Twisted instrumental 'High Ball Stepper' builds up with sparse piano and a groovy palm-muted riff, then the fuzz kicks in like a sucker punch, rendering the listener's jaw well and truly dropped.

The calmness returns in the second half of the album. 'Just One Drink' is cool and upbeat, with energetic but light piano. 'Alone In My Home' and 'Entitlement' are equally pleasant to listen to, even if they are bordering on the generic. These songs are by no means bad; in fact, they're great, with White's unmistakable voice taking a more childlike tone that it has been known to do; and while they demonstrate White's diversity, they're not quite as exciting as the more blues rock tunes, where the electric guitar has a firm presence.

Jack White Offers Apology To Black Keys, Amy Winehouse, Adele And Many Others

Jack White

Jack White seems to be regretting criticisms he made to other singers in the current Rolling Stone cover story.

The 38 year-old musician insulted The Black Keys, a whole list of female performers and stated that if Amy Winehouse was alive then Adele wouldn't have been as successful.

But White has now posted an open letter on his official website to try and clarify what he actually meant by these controversial comments.

Jack White - Lazaretto Single Review

Jack White is one of the most admired musicians of the 21st century having helped revive blues and garage rock with The White Stripes as well as being a member of The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. These days, White is mainly a solo artist, having released his highly acclaimed solo debut 'Blunderbuss' in 2012 and being set to unveil 'Lazaretto' on June 10th this year. This is the first official single and title track from that album, after the quirky instrumental teaser 'High Ball Stepper', and it's simply brilliant.

Jack White - Lazaretto Single Review

'Lazaretto' is all funky for the first minute and a half with a slick bassline, fuzzy guitars and White's vocals being manic and sassy. This is great in itself, but there's these really random, bright, 8-bit sounds underlying the song, that make it a delight. Followed by a scratchy guitar solo, the song goes into a low sounding riff, with 8-bit noises sounding like Pac-Man dying over and over again and White robotically singing, 'They wanna blow down the prison, they're lighting fires with the cash of the masses, and like the dough I don't fall down, I'm so Detroit I make it rise from the ashes'. These elements go perfectly together and, if possible, make the song even more dazzling. Towards the end of the song there's a fiddle solo of all things; again, you don't see it coming and it lengthens the smile the rest of this song has already put on your face.

This song is an amazing adventure full of twists, turns and incredibly pleasant surprises. The 8-bit sounds especially are just not what you'd expect from White and his legendary guitar skills are as amazing as they ever were. 'Lazaretto' along with 'High Ball Stepper' hint heavily at an experimental album from White, one that we should be very excited about. At the start of the millennium, Jack White brought blues and garage rock back into the mainstream, now he seems to be taking it into the future.
