Disney is facing a backlash over the casting of Jack Whitehall as the studio’s first openly gay major film character in the upcoming film Jungle Cruise.

The comedian, who is straight, announced he was “honoured” at being appointed to the role for the film, due to arrive in 2019. However, the news has led to some criticism from the LGBTQ+ community, with many asking why Disney couldn’t have given the role to a gay actor.

Furthermore, reports on Wednesday (August 15th) that Whitehall’s character will be “hugely effete” and “very camp” led to campaigners for LGBTQ+ rights warned that Disney risked getting the tone wrong for a potential watershed moment by “playing up to negative tropes and received ideas about queer people”.

This Christmas might not be the best for British comedian Jack Whitehall, who has recently split from his partner of six years Gemma Chan. It seems the pair are simply too busy for a relationship as their careers continue to blossom, but they are at least staying friends.

29-year-old Jack and 35-year-old Gemma first met on the set of 'Fresh Meat' and have been dating ever since. However, in September they finally called it quits as it becomes increasingly difficult to enjoy couple time together. Gemma has apparently moved back in with her parents in Kent.

Jack Whitehall has been named as “king of comedy” for the third consecutive year at the British Comedy Awards 2014.

The 26 year old comedian and actor won the publicly-voted prize at the ceremony in Wembley, north-west London, on Tuesday evening. He beat the other nominated contenders David Mitchell, Lee Mack, Graham Norton, Greg Davies and Jo Brand.

James Corden and his wife Julia Carey are expecting their second child together, a rep has confirmed to the Mirror. The couple were last spotted at the weekends TV BAFTAs on Sunday night where a very small bump could clearly been seen under Carey's form-fitting black dress but now the news has been confirmed officially.

Fast-forward 4 years and a similarly niche sub-section of the BBC – the television channel BBC3 – is facing extinction, unless a social media campaign and some celebrity backers can save it.
