It was overlooked in the big one, the Oscars, but at least Skyfall is loved by some. The Judi Dench and Daniel Craig-starring James Bond film is up for six categories at the Empire Film Awards, as the makers behind it seek to take some consolation from an awards season that started out so promisingly but ultimately was hugely disappointing.

The most commercially successful Bond movie in America and one of the most critically acclaimed of the entire series, many were hoping that the franchise might finally break its Oscars hoodoo with a few high profile nominations. That didn’t happen though, despite a section of the event being dedicated to the franchise. However, at the Empires it looks like it could be a different story. Craig and Dench are up for best actor and best actress respectively, whilst Skyfall the film has picked up nominations for best thriller, best British film, best director and best film at the awards. The key difference to the Empires, compared to other perhaps more profile events, is that these are voted for by the fans, which means Skyfall can count itself strongly in the running, given the strong public reception it received last year.

Those who did win an Oscar last weekend and are again involved here include Daniel Day-Lewis (up for best actor) Jennifer Lawrence (best actress) and Anne Hathaway (also best actress.) Interestingly enough Lawrence and Hathaway are up for different roles than the ones which brought them Oscars success, with Lawrence’s performance in The Hunger Games being recognized, and Hathaway’s turn in The Dark Knight Rises.
