For most people in the modern world, they don't need to think about the consequences of modern day living, it's hard to think that people still need to mine land physically and often in treacherous conditions. In 2010 the world was reminded of just how risky that job can be.

When a 100+ year-old copper & gold mine in Chile suffers considerable damage to the shaft due to a cave-in, the world's news is quick to report the disaster. All life was thought to be lost and there was little hope of finding survivors, however deep inside the mine, a group of 33 men were fighting for survival. As the world learnt of their battle for survival, the onlookers could only imagine the tribulations the men inside faced. Main communication with the outside world was from one miner called Mario who was affectionately named 'super Mario', thanks to his videos, he could relay information to the support crew telling them about the men's wellbeing and progress.

Director Patricia Riggen's The 33 was filmed with the cooperation of the miners and tells their story from 700 meters underground. The 33 is Patricia Riggen's first major directorial role, though in 2012 she shot Girl In Progress starring Eva Mendes.

Maura and Jane have a lot of differences; Maura has a high-flying job at a hospital, though is recovering from a divorce and a little nervous when it comes to meeting other men, while Jane is, well, not. They're nonetheless the best sisters you could imagine and always bring out the best in each other. However, when they're parents call them back to their childhood home, they discover that it's been sold and they have to clean out the room they had as girls. Going through their old stuff brings back a lot of memories though, and Jane decides to encourage Maura to throw a huge neighborhood party before they have to leave. It's a time where they can re-connect to their teenage selves, hook up with some cute guys and get totally drunk. This is going to be messy.

Alice Eckle is a roller-skating waitress deeply in love with Indiana State Trooper Scott. Before the two can get engaged, however, Eckle suffers a severe accident with a nail gun and gets a nail lodged deep in her skull. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't have any health insurance so she is forced to walk away from hospital without any surgery to remove it. In the meantime, she suffers brain damage which causes her to have mood swings, an increased sex drive and unpredictable behaviours. Needless to say, Scott is less than keen on the idea of marrying her now. No matter though, Alice appears to have other things on her mind; she wants to meet young Congressman Howard Birdwell to show her support for his proposition of beginning a healthcare bill. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have a clue what he's talking about, but that doesn't stop her falling head over heels for him.

Fred Barcroft is an old man struggling to find much good in his life following the death of his wife. While he feels terribly lonely, he hates being around people, and while he despises the tiny apartment his daughter Lydia has moved him into, he can't bear to enjoy the world outside. Soon he meets Elsa Hayes from a nearby apartment; a free spirit of similar age determined to enjoy the last years of her life in the most spectacular ways possible, be it running from an expensive restaurant without paying or going dancing like she did when she was young. She teaches Fred that death is not something to be feared, rather a motivation to live the life you have. While Lydia disapproves of her father's newfound romance, he starts to open up, cheer up and realise that his life is far from over.
