The sequel to all-time 2009 box office hit Avatar has hit the skids - again - with director James Cameron revealing Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 will not be surfacing in 2018. The Titanic movie maker is undertaking four sequels altogether and has previously described the undertaking as an "epic undertaking".

Reuters reported Cameron speaking to the Toronto Star that he has been working on the four films simultaneously and, as a result, there is currently no firm release date for Avatar 2.

The Oscar-winning director said: "Well 2018 is not happening. We haven’t announced a firm release date.

"What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2, we’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5.

"It’s an epic undertaking."

Cameron added: "It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now."

The figure the Twentieth Century Fox movie, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Salanda, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver, reached has never been surpassed.

At least one aspect of the Avatar franchise is currently on time with Disney recently giving people a glimpse into the new Pandora theme park attraction due to open at Disney World in Orlando, Florida in May.

The Pandora attraction features a Na'vi River Journey, floating mountains, luminescent plants, and an Avatar Flight of Passage ride.

All attractions have been inspired by the movie and its upcoming sequels, according to features on Disney-owned TV shows "Good Morning America" and "The View.".
