Ouch. 'The Best Of Me' Scores A Lowly 8% On Rotten Tomatoes

Michelle Monaghan Luke Bracey James Marsden

Making its case for worst Nicholas Sparks adaptation ever in The Best of Me - one of this weekend's cinematic offerings and easily one of the worst movies of the year. This sort of stuff usually sells - Safe Heaven, The Last Song, Dear John and, of course The Notebook - but there's a theory that The Best of Me won't be the guaranteed earner that Relatively probably assumes it is.

James Marsden Michelle MonaghanJames Marsden [L] and Michelle Monaghan [R] in 'The Best of Me'

Based on Sparks' novel of the same name, the book tells the story of Dawson and Amanda, former high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend. Billed as an "epic love story", The Best of Me appears to contain every cliché in the book. That's the book of movie clichés, not the book The Best of Me - although that probably contains just as many platitudes.

HBO is known for big budget television series featuring high calibre stars, and it looks like their latest project is no different. Is 'Walk Of Shame' 2014's Biggest Box Office Failure So Far?

Elizabeth Banks James Marsden

If you’re looking for a film this year to live up to its name then why not try Elizabeth Bank’s new movie. Unfortunately for her, its name is Walk of Shame and that pretty much sums up the movie’s journey at the box office this weekend. But want went wrong for the comedy which cost $15 million to produce, but only took a dismal $38,000 in its opening weekend?

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks stars in Walk of Shame

Walk of Shame is part of the new crop of female centric comedies which were inspired by Bridesmaids success but are yet lived up to it creatively. Of them all, Walk of Shame might be the one which falls furthest from the mark. It follows Banks as aspiring news anchor Meghan Miles, who stranded in Downtown LA after a one night stand, has only eight hours to make an important job interview.

She is forced to don her friend's 'slutty', bright yellow dress that is unfortunately overly conspicuous and she is subsequently picked up by a charming stranger. Later on, however, she awakens with several voice messages from work explaining that the network are looking for a new anchor; this is the job of a lifetime for Meghan, but she has a serious mission if she wants to get to the studio on time - a mission that's made even more complicated when her car is towed away with her purse inside and she finds herself lost without money, ID or a phone. With everyone thinking she's just a roaming hooker, nobody seems willing to help her. Just what trouble will she have to push through to collect her belongings and get to work on time?

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Review

Good

It's been nearly 10 years since we first met Ron Burgundy, and this sequel is just as random and silly as expected. It's also more like a series of referential gags than an actual movie comedy, and as with the original film the best bits are knowing jabs at absurdities of the news media. This time we're in the 1980s, so there's plenty to make fun of here.

Over the past decade, Ron (Ferrell) has married Veronica (Applegate), and they've taken a joint anchor job in New York, where they live with their son (Nelson). But when Veronica lands a coveted network news job, Ron has a meltdown. Drunk and unemployed, he's approached to work on a new station: a 24-hour cable news channel. Even though he's sure this crazy idea will never catch on, Ron re-assembles his old team (swaggering reporter Rudd, dazed weatherman Carell and goofy sports guy Koechner) to beat handsome anchor Jack Lime (Marsden) in the ratings. And Ron's offbeat, populist approach changes the news forever.

This comical exploration of how TV news has shifted from hard reporting to shameless audience pandering gives the film a whiff of depth, which helps make the comical moments a lot funnier. The screenplay is a series of sketch-comedy episodes that don't quite hang together. For example, you could delete an extended sequence in which Ron goes blind, nurses a shark to health and sings a big musical number, and the movie wouldn't change at all. But all of these sequences have an absurd genius behind them that often gets us laughing, sometimes in disbelief.

The legend of San Diego's Channel 4 news team may have long since dissolved over the years, but anchors Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind are set to return as part of a brand new 24-hour news channel. In a bid to innovate newsreading and once again come out on top over Ron's wife and rival Veronica, they decide that they're going to give viewers the news they want to hear rather than what they need to. As usual, their antics involve the usual scandal and debauchery, putting their careers and tarnished reputations once again in the media's line of fire. No matter though, as these co-workers have each other's backs all the way.

The Butler Review

Good

This is an strangely slushy movie from Lee Daniels, whose last two films (Precious and The Paperboy) bristled with unexpected life. By contrast, this star-packed drama uses a true story to trace the Civil Rights struggle from the 1950s to the present day. But it's been so fictionalised that it feels kind of like a variation on Forrest Gump.

Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) grew up on a Georgia cotton plantation, where the cruel master's kindly mother (Redgrave) taught him to be a house servant. Years later, he marries Gloria (Winfrey) and moves to Washington DC, where he gets a job in the White House as a butler to presidents from Eisenhower (Williams) to Reagan (Rickman). His job description is simple: "You hear nothing, you see nothing, you only serve." And yet as the nation grapples with its racist culture, he has a quiet influence on each leader who moves through the house.

Whitaker narrates the film in drawling flashbacks, while the story flickers between Cecil and his eldest son Louis (Oyelowo), an activist who is involved in every key moment in the Civil Rights movement. And their younger son (Kelley) is sent to Vietnam. So it's like a condensed version of late 20th century American history, made notable by the lively cast of cameo players including Marsden (as JFK), Schreiber (LBJ), Ellis (MLK) and Cusack (Nixon), plus Fonda as a lively Nancy Reagan.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - International Trailer

The news used to be a noble profession before the likes of Ron Burgundy with his set of San Diego anchors Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind took over. Now it's all about scandal, debauchery and vulgarity and Burgundy and his team are fighting hard to keep it that way. As per usual, they manage to get themselves in all kinds of trouble involving drugs in the studio, completely inappropriate news headlines, accidental racism (not to mention homophobia) and, of course, getting laid, and it's all in a bid to remain on top of the media as Ron fights his own battle to professionally tower over his wife and rival Veronica.

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' is the even more hilarious sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'. There's definitely more laughs to be had from everyone's favourite news readers as Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall') returns to produce it. Director Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') is also back alongside his co-writer and star Will Ferrell. It is set to feature in cinemas just in time for Christmas, premiering in theatres everywhere on December 20th 2013.

2 Guns Review

Excellent

What looks like a rather standard buddy action comedy is elevated by a smarter-than-normal script, skilful direction and surprisingly offhanded chemistry between Washington and Wahlberg. In addition to the usual action chaos, the film lets big issues gurgle under the surface while refusing to play it safe. For example, the villain here is the US government, rather than some cliched foreign nutcase.

It's set on the US-Mexico border, where smooth operator Bobby (Washington) is working with fast-talking Stig (Wahlberg) to make a deal with the drug kingpin Papi Greco (Olmos). When they decide to rob a local bank to get his attention, the whole situation blows up in their faces. Not only does it emerge that both are undercover federal agents (Bobby with the DEA and Stig with Navy Intelligence), but their bosses (Burke and Marsden, respectively) are unwilling to protect them. Even Bobby's colleague-girlfriend (Patton) can't really help. And now they're being chased by everyone, including Papi and a swaggering killer (Paxton) with connections to the CIA.

The rather crazy plot demands that we pay attention as each of these factions is brought into focus, and it's refreshing to see a big movie that never abandons its own internal logic. Everything does indeed fit together into a larger picture, and since Bobby and Stig are alone in trying to figure it out, we happily go with them. Washington and Wahlberg are having a lot of fun with these characters as they jostle against each other in various displays of messy bravado. Opposite them, Patton has a thankless sexy-female role, but Olmos is quietly fierce, and Paxton steals every scene as a cocky, sneering villain who leaves a trail of destruction in his wake.
