James McAvoy in Filth

Two big British films hit UK cinemas this week. After storming the Scottish box office last weekend and garnering rave reviews across the board, Filth arrives in the rest of the country this week. Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), the Edinburgh black comedy stars  in a career-redefining role as a deeply nasty cop. Read our 'Filth' review here.

Meanwhile, Saoirse Ronan stars in the introspective thriller How I Live Now, set in a present-day Britain that's engulfed in war. Opening in the UK this weekend and in America next month, the film is directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), and the cast includes rising stars George MacKay (Hunky Dory) and Tom Holland (The Impossible). At the New York Film Festival, the big red carpet gala was for the true piracy thriller Captain Phillips, and the star Tom Hanks was on hand with costar Barkhad Abdi and director Paul Greengrass (United 93) to talk about the gruelling experience of making the film. It opens the London Film Festival next week before arriving in US and UK cinemas later this month. Inside Llewyn Davis

Also at the New York Film Festival, the Coen brothers were on hand to present their new movie Inside Llewyn Davis, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes this year. Joining the filmmakers on the red carpet were stars Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Adam Driver, amongst others. The comedy-drama chronicles the New York music scene of the early 1960s. Jason Statham's next action movie released its first trailer this week. Written by Sylvester Stallone, the film centres on a retired DEA operative who moves to a small town with his young daughter but can't escape his violent past. Costars include James Franco, Kate Bosworth and Winona Ryder. The film opens next month. You can watch the Homefront trailer here.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

And finally, we had a sparkling new trailer and a range of new images from December's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the middle chapter in the new trilogy. This looks considerably darker than the first film, with rather a lot of big action featuring elves (including Orlando Bloom's Legolas), dwarves and a scary dragon. Take a look at the new ' trailer and browse over the latest pictures from the film.
