In a trilogy of books in which spanking and sex contracts are the norm, audiences will be surprised to hear there's little sex in the preview of Fifty Shades of Grey. Whilst fans are busy creating their own trailers in which S&M is definitely present, Universal Pictures, the studio behind the Sam Taylor Johnson directed films, are ensuring the films remain on the "vanilla" side of the sexual tracks.

Lucky fans were treated to a five minute preview of the film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this week. Most were not overly disappointed with the film's emphasis on romance and some even claimed "Fifty Shades is going to be the next iconic screen romance".

The emphasis on romance rather than bondage, control and possession is certainly in keeping with how the books are being portrayed in publicity images and online. E.L. James is keen to market her novels as "love" stories and those commenting on the preview are pleased with the subtle hints at S&M and the overriding romance between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

James has retweeted a number of fan comments which all attempt to highlight this. One fan who caught the footage said the "Fifty Shades sneak looked like a love story. No nudity, a short flash of red room, the elevator "Anastasia/Christian" moment." Others expressed their surprise at the reaction of media outlets regarding the lack of sex within the preview. Another insipid comment James felt obliged to retweet claimed Fifty Shades is about "true love" and not simply sex.

Film critics have also commented on the tame nature of the preview with CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg stating: "While the movie promises to be filled with all kinds of taboo carnal relations, what was shown in the clips was very PG-rated (they didn't even mention the word "sex.")". However, Eisenberg has suggested owing to the way in which the preview was cut, it is simply a prototype trailer which will be acceptable to show in cinemas. Thus there may secretly be more smut which isn't appropriate, unless specifically disclosed, being filmed which will make the final cut. We shall have to wait and see.

Dakota Johnson

The first promotional images of the film were released earlier this year and the build up to Valentine's Day 2015, when the film is due to be released, has begun. After an initial shaky start to production following the controversial casting of Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey, the film is now back on track with Jamie Dornan replacing Hunnam after he stepped down and Dakota Johnson playing Anastasia Steele. A whole host of other actors - and even a singer- have joined the fairly small cast.
