This year’s longlist of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been released, and there’s a number of familiar faces among the new names.

Janet Jackson, who last week released her first new music in seven years with her eleventh album Unbreakable, is the biggest new name on the list, which also includes Chicago, Steve Miller, Chaka Khan, Cheap Trick, The Cars, The J.B.'s and Los Lobos as first-time nominees.

A number of artists have been nominated in the past – most notably Chic, the influential disco and funk band fronted by Nile Rodgers, who have been nominated on 10 occasions without being inducted. Other artists for whom this represents a multiple nomination include The Smiths, N.W.A., Nine Inch Nails, Deep Purple, Yes and The Spinners.

For the fourth year in a row, the public is able to have a say on who will be finally inducted into the Hall of Fame. Voting can be done at Rollingstone.com or at the Hall of Fame’s website, and the names currently in contention will be whittled down to a shortlist on December 9th, ahead of the actual ceremony in April 2016 in New York City.

More than 800 artists, music historians and industry leaders have usually had the final say on which acts get the final nod, but one of the inductees will enter because of the popular vote.

The Hall of Fame class of 2015 included Green Day, Lou Reed, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ringo Starr.
