Benedict Cumberbatch will make his superhero debut in next year in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. But it almost wasn’t to be for the ‘Sherlock’ actor, as his commitments to stage play Hamlet nearly cost him the role.

Speaking to Empire magazine, the film’s director Scott Derrickson said that Cumberbatch was “the only actor we seriously considered” for the superhero role. But unfortunately, Cumberbatch had already signed on to play Hamlet at London’s Barbican in the autumn of 2015.

He’s already taken on the prestigious role of The Joker this year, but now Jared Leto is set to tackle the role of a real-life cultural icon, with the announcement that he’s to produce and star in a new biopic about Andy Warhol.

Leto, 44, has signed on to portray the legendary pop artist in a new biopic project simply titled Warhol. He will also co-produce the film alongside Michael De Luca, whose credits include The Social Network, Fifty Shades of Grey and Captain Phillips.

Terence Winter, best known for his writing work on hit TV shows ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’, is adapting the script for the project from Victor Bockris’ 1989 book ‘Warhol: The Biography’.

Suicide Squad actor Jared Leto is just as disappointed as fans are about The Joker’s lack of screen time in the comic book movie. Despite being heavily featured in the film’s trailers, Leto’s Joker doesn’t appear much in the actual movie, with a lot of his scenes being left on the cutting room floor.

When asked by IGN if he was upset about any of his scenes getting cut, the actor responded: “Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start.

And he decided to take on the iconic supervillain Joker in the DC Comics thriller Suicide Squad. It's a brash move, but Leto says he loved the film's originality. "You can anticipate a lot of chaos and a hell of a lot of fun," he says. "And I think it's something completely different than other movies in the genre."

An actor who also fronts a rock band (30 Seconds to Mars), Leto says he doesn't have a master plan, even after winning an Academy Award. "My career has had a nice slow burn," he says. "I never woke up one day and all of a sudden my life changed. And I'm grateful for that, because I think it has allowed me the time and space to adjust accordingly, to find out where and how I'm comfortable doing things. A little bit has been fate. Some of it's been design. Fame has never been a target for me."

Jared Leto has some big shoes to fill when it comes to playing The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. In 1989’s Batman the role was taken on by the legendary Jack Nicholson then in 2008 The Joker was reimagined through Heath Ledger’s portrayal in The Dark Knight, but now it’s Leto’s turn to make the role his own.

Jared Leto has apologised to Taylor Swift after a video emerged online of him critiquing tracks from her album 1989. The video was posted by TMZ on Monday but appeared to have been recorded a few months back, when Leto and his bandmates were listening to Swift’s music in the studio for a bit of inspiration.

Academy Award-winning actor and singer Jared Leto has been sporting a rather lengthy beard as of late, but when he stopped by the 'Tonight Show' on Wednesday (Aug 20th), host Jimmy Fallon offered to give the 42 year-old's facial hair a much needed trim.

But it always seemed to find its way back to me."

The big news this morning has to be the Mtv Movie Awards. Since it’s so far out of awards season and generally awards the biggest movies of the year, the awards are a good way to see where the wind is blowing, for this summer, in terms of blockbusters. So here is your much needed rundown. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire won Movie of the Year (is anyone really surprised) and still mostly rules the young adult and sci-fi scenes, with new hopeful Divergent. With Conan O’Brien hosting, Hunger Games leads Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson snapped up Best Female Performance and Best Male Performance, respectively, E! News reports. Meanwhile, the red carpet was just as eventful.

Parks & Rec’s Chris Pratt, who is set to have one epic summer with Guardians of the Galaxy, stopped for some red carpet interviews and said he and wife Anna Faris are working on developing Vacation Friends, a comedy recently bought by Fox. "It will be a chance for us to work together again," he said. "It's in the preliminary stages,” Pratt told USA Today.

The Academy Awards drew its biggest TV audience in more than a decade on Sunday night, as the Oscars were shared by a variety of hit films and performances. Ellen Degeneres hosted the ceremony, giving the night a populist touch by serving pizza to the A-listers and taking a star-packed selfie that managed to crash Twitter.

As for the winners, 12 Years a Slave won three top prizes - for best film, screenplay and supporting actress - while the blockbuster Gravity took home seven awards. There were also popular wins for Matthew Mcconaughey, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and the animated film Frozen. There’s been so much fuss surrounding Matthew McConaughey’s Oscars speech that no one has stopped to really take a look at Jared Leto’s. Jared made all the formulaic thanks to the regulars, the Academy, his mother, his brother etc. and on the whole made a moving and modest speech. He also managed to include a mention of those living with and fighting HIV and AIDS, which McConaughey failed to recognise in his own speech, despite having won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof, an AIDS victim.

However, midway through, Jared Leto offered up one rather unusual inclusion to his Oscars acceptance speech. Jared, rather incongruously to the theme of the rest of the speech, said: "To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight, in places like the Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say we are here and as you struggle to make your dreams happen to live the impossible, we’re thinking of you tonight."  We’re not entirely convinced that Ukraine and Venezuela were truly what was on his mind, as he accepted your Oscar and headed to the Vanity Fair after-party. Russia weren’t best pleased either, cutting his speech short on television as soon as he mentioned Ukraine. If that doesn’t scream democracy and freedom of speech then we don’t know what does.

When Ellen Degeneres took the Academy Awards gig this year, she had some huge expectations to live up to. Mostly expectations that she wouldn’t alienate half the audience thanks to a certain performance by Seth Macfarlane the previous year. So Ellen found an easy solution and bribed all the attendees with pizza. Presumably, it was the ever hungry Jennifer Lawrence who had the best time as the delivery guy (still unclear whether he was an actor or not) walked into the Dolby Theater and started handing out slices to the A-listers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto and Harison Ford each got a slice, before Ellen left it to producer Harvey Winestein to foot the bill. He must have been a good tipper, though.

"No pressure, only a billion people are watching, whatever you feel is right," she shouted.

Ellen's casual hosting style was a nice change of pace for the stuffy award show.

Jared Leto is fresh off receiving the very first award at this year's Academy-Award's as he was prized with Best Supporting Actor.

The 42 year-old won the award for his role as a transgender person dying of AIDS in 'The Dallas Buyers Club,' where he starred alongside Matthew McConaughey, who won Best Actor, and Jennifer Garner.

When receiving the award, Leto took the opportunity to discuss a global issues, and sent out a message to of support to Ukraine and Venezuela.

When Matthew Mcconaughey first read the script for Dallas Buyers Club, he knew he wanted to make the film. The screenplay had been circulating for more than 15 years, and he saw it as something original. As he says, "This would work as good entertainment and an important story even it it was fiction. But it wasn't! It was based on this real man's life."

For McConaughey, it's the film's utter lack of sentimentality that makes it different. Ron Woodroof is an obstinate homophobe when we meet him, and the film never gives him some sort of epiphany or turnaround. "Ron's redemption always had to be subtle because that's who he was," he says. Golden Globes Glory: Last weekend's Golden Globe awards set hearts racing ahead of March's Oscars with plenty of deserving winners next to a few jaw-dropping snubs. 12 Years A Slave predictably came out on top with the big gong but a few unpredictabilities set award odds and Oscars speculation askew. Newbie comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine saw off rivals to claim two awards whilst Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett took the leading lady award alongside Dallas Buyers Club's  for the men.

Gravity's Alfonso Cuarón stole Best Director from Steve McQueen whilst Breaking Bad and Behind The Candelabra snatched the big TV awards. The surprise wins also made for some truly memorable speeches too, with Elisabeth Moss exclamation of "Oh s**t!" and Jacqueline Bisset's sweary ramble marking two particular highlights. On the same day as the nominations for this year's Academy Awards ceremony were revealed, the latest instalment of the ongoing awards season went by at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California, where the 19th annual Critic's Choice Awards honoured the cast and crew of some of last's year's biggest and best films.

Gravity soared to success at the Critic's Choice Awards

The big winner on the night was the space thriller Gravity, which soared to success with seven wins by the end of the night. Among it's credits the film earned Alfonso Cuarón the award for Best Director and the award for Best Editing, shared with co-editor Mark Sanger. The film also earned Sandra Bullock the award for Best Actress In An Action Movie and was crowned as crowned the Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. The film also scored recognition for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Score.

Jared Leto and Michael Douglas each won a Golden Globe award last night for their stand-out performances in very different films. Both actors' characters share the similarity of being part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community with Leto's Rayon a transgender woman suffering with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club and Douglas' gay Liberace lifted from real life in Behind The Candelabra.

With such high profile awards for what would have traditionally been controversial roles, the actors' wins mark a great leap forward for the portrayal of LGBT characters in movies and a move to eradicate homophobia and stereotyping in cinema. Whilst these positives cannot be denied, it has been noted in the wake of the initial glow and glamour of the awards that not every aspect of Leto and Douglas' win is cause for celebration.

Whilst few were surprised that 12 Years A Slave picked up the evening's crowning award, the Best Motion Picture for Drama, the movie apparently hadn't originally appealed to the Hollywood Foreign Press, despite global critical acclaim. Nevertheless, Steve McQueen's slavery drama took home the award, seeing of some admittedly strong competition from Nebraska, Philomena, Rush and Gravity.

The 2014 Golden Globes came and went on Sunday, 12 January night as the stars of Hollywood gathered for the first real awards showcase of the year. The event didn't let down, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler delivering the laughs throughout the event and with individual stars using their time in the spotlight to grand effect, resulting in a night to remember.

The two top-contested awards, Best Motion Picture for Drama and for Musical or Comedy, were awarded to the early favourites and the two titles looking most likely to sweep up over the course of awards season: 12 Years A Slave and America Hustle.

12 Years a Slave hasn't even been released in most countries yet but has already been heaped with accolades with more awards bound to blossom from the scores of nominations Steve McQueen's movie has garnered. The Screen Actors Guild awards nominations are out and yet again the slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor has emerged on top with four major nominations.

The critically lauded movie is up for best ensemble, best male actor (Chewitel Ejiofor), best supporting male actor (Michael Fassbender) and best supporting female actor (Lupita Nyong'o). 12 Years will come up against American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, Lee Daniels' The Butler and August: Osage County in the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, according to the LA Times.

This week is pretty much all about The Hunger Games as Catching Fire arrives in cinemas around the world. After last week's world premiere in London, the cast headed back to America for back-to-back premieres in Los Angeles and New York. Meanwhile, a range of clips and short online features have whipped up fan frenzy to potentially record-breaking box office potential. It’s official, Matthew Mcconaughey’s days as an up-and-coming, comedy actor are over. Mud and Dallas Buyer’s Club have seen to that, with what looks like a sterling performance in True Detectives coming in January to boot. But it’s the 44-year-old’s performance as Ron Woodruff that has the critic’s heads in a spin.

Woodruff was a cowboy unfamiliar with the quieter side of life. Always living as he pleased, his stormy existence came into serious doubt when he was given 30 days to live after being diagnosed with the AIDs virus - a death sentence in the 80s, when the film is set.

Matthew Mcconaughey has been the butt of many a joke over the course of his career, with his acting ability often brought into question by critics and jokers alike thanks to his largely uninspired choice of roles. His latest film, however, is a major departure from his usual rom-com venture and has even had people crying out for him to be awarded an Oscar, or at least get a nomination for his work in Dallas Buyers Club.

McConaughey is exceptional in the film

McConaughey stars as Ron Woodroof in the true story of the former Dallas Cowboys star who is stricken with the still-largely unknown and misunderstood HIV virus in 1986. Abandoned by his friends and acquaintances and given just 30 days to live by his largely unhelpful team of doctors, Woodroof is forced to take matters into his own hands and ships in various 'cures' and treatments from across the globe. Soon he begins to build up a surplus of supplies and begins distributing them among the largely ignored HIV-suffering population, meeting like-minded people on his trip, including Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto, both of whom have also been widely praised for their performances.

Matthew McConaughey stars in Dallas Buyers Club as HIV positive Texas Cowboy, Ron Woodroof. The film is based on the true story of Woodroof and the early days of the AIDS epidemic. When Woodroof was diagnosed with HIV he was given 30 days to live and, receiving little help from the government or his acquaintances, attempts to find treatments from across the globe. Along the way he encounters other HIV positive people and discovers a way to ensure these people could buy treatment.

We've been spoiled by great films all year and this first week of November is no different with a cornucopia of cinematic excitement headed towards US shores.

'Last Vegas' - Out 1st Nov.

Arguably the most entertaining release of the week will be Jon Turteltaub's new comedy, Last Vegas. The movie has assembled a sterling cast of older actors, including Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline. To call the movie the grandpa's version of The Hangover would not be giving the film credit for its compelling premise which makes for a hugely watchable film with a driving force of solid acting talent.

The film sees McConaughey adopt the role of Ron Woodruff, an unpredictable, irrepressible player in the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Having been diagnosed with the disease himself, he set out to form a black market where people could buy drugs otherwise unavailable in the U.S, becoming a cult figure in the process.

English television presenter Alexa Chung was reportedly ''bored and sad'' following her break-up with Alex Turner, the frontman for the Artic Monkeys. Chung has spoken out for the first time since her four-year relationship with Turner ended in July of 2011, stating that she didn't know what to do with herself. The 29-year-old model and presenter apparently started a new project instead of wallow in heartache, apparently, which led to the writing of her new book, 'It'. 

In a discussion about the time after her relationship ended, Chung said: ''I was approaching 30, and reflecting on how a lot had happened in such a short space of time ... And I was bored - really bored. Bored because I didn't have my fuse gig yet. Bored and sad. I shouldn't have said that. But, well, it's the truth. I was heartbroken and I didn't know what to do, so I decided to throw myself into a project.''

The 2014 Oscars will be dominated by films based on a true stories, and a worthy addition to that lengthy list is Dallas Buyers Club, the true-life tale of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who went to war with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986.

Playing Woodroof is Matthew McConaughey, and the chain-smoking, whiskey-downing cocaine-sniffing rodeo cowboy is masterfully portrayed in Dallas Buyers, or so says the reviews. Now we’re looking at another Oscar contender.

Matthew Mcconaughey has a very real chance of scoring his first ever Oscar nomination for The Dallas Buyers Club. Before this week, we'd only been treated to stills from the drama - showing the Hollywood actor playing a dangerously thin AIDS patient - though now we have the trailer, and the 38-year-old's performance comes across very, very well.

Early reaction suggest The Dallas Buyers Club could be McConaughey's strongest role yet and the first footage appears to corroborate with that line of thought. The thing is: if McConaughey is going to score a lead actor nomination, then Jared Leto may get the nod for supporting actor by default. He plays fellow AIDS patient Rayon, who weighed just 116 pounds during filming, evoking memories of Christian Bale's chilling appearance in The Machinist.

Based on a true story, The Dallas Buyers Club sees McConaughey play Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, a man who found himself in a life or death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies.

Sacha Baron Cohen AKA Ali G AKA Borat AKA... you get it, was an example of a truly fitting casting decision when it was announced he'd be playing Freddie Mercury in a biopic about the late Queen lead singer's life, with even Brian May and Roger Taylor on board to contribute a few tunes and make sure the film was headed in the right direction.

It's true, there's few more perfect to play iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury than British comic Sacha Baron Cohen: the looks, the eccentricity, the infectious energy and the unquestionably self-confident flair. However, the 41 year-old actor has pulled out of the planned biopic due to "creative differences," confirms Baron Cohen's manager via Variety. According to Deadline, the band were after a more PG-ready film whilst Baron Cohen pushed for a grittier tell-all R-rated version that would take a deeper look at the talented singer's life both on and off the stage.

The latest pressing question on people’s minds – does Jared Leto resemble Katy Perry or Zooey Deschanel? Not in his natural state of course, then he mostly resembles a moodier version of Jake Gyllenhaal (by popular opinion). But put a pink wig and some cherry red lipstick on that man and you’ve got yourself a Katy Perry lookalike, apparently. You can see where we’re going with this. right? Leto donned the drag getup for the cover of Candy magazine – no special reason, presumably because he just felt like wearing a pink wig that day. According to MTV, the cover was shot by Terry Richardson, whom you may recognise from Kate Upton’s infamous Cat Daddy video, or most other things Kate Upton has done, really.

Ok, the 30 Seconds To Mars vocalist does, in fact, have a movie to promote these days. Leto tends to go for the quirkier roles out there and his part in The Dallas Buyers Club follows the same pattern. In DBC, the singer/actor plays an AIDS-afflicted transsexual. According to the Candy article, he was forced to lose 30lbs for that role.
