The Gift Trailer

Simon and Robyn barely have time to contemplate their perfect lives with their happy marriage and beautiful new house when they come face to face with the less than perfect past. While shopping at a department store Simon bumps into an old classmate named Gordo, though it takes a while for him to recognise him. When a bottle of expensive wine shows up on their doorstep from Gordo, they are left wondering how he got the address but nonetheless invite him over for dinner to say thank you for the house-warming gift. But pretty soon Gordo starts frequently showing up uninvited with stranger and stranger gifts, and when Simon tries to break off their unwanted friendship, things start to get scary. Threatening notes are left, Robyn's fish are suddenly dead and their house is being vandalised. Robyn starts to become seriously suspicious of her husband when the suggestion of an uncomfortable past between the two men arises, and she's desperate to find out what happened before things get out of hand.

Zootopia - Teaser Trailer

It's often said that mankind is the scourge of the Earth, disrupting the civilised nature of animal life and the environment. So imagine a world of walking, talking and fully-clothed animals of all kinds and not a human being in sight - peace at last, right? Well, not so much. It seems inborn enmity is still a thing in Zootopia, which makes the job of Officer Judy Hopps (the only rabbit on the vastly predatory town police force) extremely difficult. As feisty as she may be, she still finds herself facing everyday trouble - especially in the form of her natural enemy, a fox named Nick Wilde who is well known to the cops. But she's got other things on her mind; a mammal has gone missing and the police have only got 48 hours to find it. While she's eager to get on the case, unfortunately for her she is forced to pair with Wilde in order to use his skills as a master con artist. Can the pair defy the laws of nature and build a friendship?

Horrible Bosses 2 Review

OK

Like The Hangover, Horrible Bosses was a movie no one really wanted to see a sequel to, but here it is anyway: the same film, but even more inane. It is also likely to make plenty of money from audiences looking for mindless entertainment on a Saturday night. Although "mindless" seems almost complimentary when a movie is as idiotic as this one is. There's so little to its plot that the whole film seems to evaporate before the end of the climactic chase scene.

It's been a couple of years since Nick, Kurt and Dale (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) tried to solve their problems by trying to kill their bosses. Instead, they've become inventors, and have just sold their Shower Buddy to a popular catalogue company owned by Bert (Christoph Waltz). They go all out to fill his order, putting their necks on the line, and Bert leaves them hanging there. Faced with the prospect of losing everything, they again consult their criminal pal Jones (Jamie Foxx), who helps them launch a "kidnaping". The idea is to grab Bert's son Rex (Chris Pine) and demand a ransom to cover their debts. But Rex takes over the operation, asking for a lot more cash and causing a lot more chaos. They also run into a couple of their old bosses: sex-crazed Julia (Jennifer Aniston) is still determined to sleep with Dale, while Harken (Kevin Spacey) can still freak them out from behind bars.

Director-writer Anders and cowriter Morris use almost the exact same formula this time, going for laughs in a carefully plotted caper in which everything that can go wrong does. Although instead of merely being inept, these people are all morons. Bateman's Nick is essentially the straight man in the movie, and even he fails to notice that they've borrowed and spent a vast sum of cash without even a simple contract with Bert. Meanwhile, Kurt and Dale are mind-achingly stupid, bungling every single moment so completely that it's hard to see them as functioning adults. Pine isn't much better, but at least we haven't seen this schtick from him before, and he's rather good at it.

This Is Where I Leave You Review

OK

A sparky ensemble helps make this film entertaining even if the plot is simplistic and the themes very tame for a movie that is trying so hard to be anarchic. August: Osage County this isn't! Instead, it blends warm comedy, silly slapstick and a heavy dose of sentiment to tell a story that's engaging but never remotely surprising. But the terrific cast makes it well worth a look.

It opens as Judd (Jason Bateman) sees his life go from bad to worse: he catches his wife (Abigail Spencer) in bed with his boss (Dax Shepard), then learns that his father has died. Back home for the funeral, his mother (Jane Fonda) announces that she wants Judd to sit shiva, seven days of mourning, with his three estranged siblings: frazzled housewife Wendy (Tina Fey), frustrated Paul (Corey Stoll) and party boy Phillip (Adam Driver). Everyone in this family is dealing with relationship issues, so they all get involved in each others' lives again, even though none of them likes to talk about these things (except their hilariously over-sharing mother). So as Judd and Wendy reconnect with old flames (Rose Byrne and Timothy Olyphant, respectively), Paul and Phillip have to clarify things with their partners (Kathryn Hahn and Connie Britton).

Each of the various subplots touches on a big issue, although Jonathan Tropper's script never digs too deeply, relying on superficial comedy and simplistic emotion rather than anything too provocative. This is an odd approach for a film that is essentially trying to say that life is messy. Even the funeral and grieving are used more for laughs than emotion, as are old rivalries and perceived betrayals. Much of the brawling, insulting and teasing is genuinely funny, but only because the cast members have so much fun with it all. Bateman offers his usual likeable everyman, generating terrific chemistry with Fey, Stoll and Driver, as well as some jagged wit in his scenes with the always superb Byrne. And Fonda steals the show as an unapologetic woman who says the wrong thing at just the right time.

Rex is impressed by their plan, and decides to help them scam his father, while steadily escalating the severity of their crime. Everything seems to be in place until a cunning investor forces them to lose control of their entrepreneurial plans. With no legal standing and no money, the trio turn to their trusty crime consultant who suggests they start to be a little more ruthless if they want to pull off their latest scheme; to kidnap the investor's son and hold him for ransom. Nick, Dale and Kurt are hoping that everything will go to plan this time - but that's looking unlikely.

Master of Sex and House of Cards now look like the shows to beat, with Breaking Bad making what will be its final appearance at the Golden Globes with the series ending this year. This comes just a year after Homeland achieved the impressive feat of winning Best Drama Series, Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor all in one night, although this does mark the second year in a row that the 2007-2009 winner Mad Men has not appeared in the Best Drama category.

Netflix At The Emmys? Networks Welcome The Change

Jason Bateman Will Arnett Kevin Spacey

Beware the media revolution – specifically, Netflix shows at the Emmys. Four years after Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) predicted the death of traditional media, online shows – that is, programming specifically produced for online distribution – might, for the first time, upstage traditional broadcasts. The contenders are the obvious ones – Arrested Development and House of Cards. The shows are leading contenders for the Best Actor and Best Program nominations – categories, which have up until now been the exclusive domain of broadcast and cable networks.

Jason Bateman, Apple Store SoHo
Are online shows the way of the future?

Regardless of whether the two shows have any chance of winning - which, given their critical and audience reception, seems likely – the mere fact that the two are being considered shows a shift in the paradigm, so to speak. However, it might be that Netflix specifically, and not online content in general, is moving into the mainstream.

The show’s fourth season of the show was part of a large-scale experiment for Netflix, the first phase of the company’s transition from a pure rental service into a producer of online content. Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings has called “Arrested Development” and other “Netflix originals” integral to his strategy of transforming the company from a purveyor of rerun programming into a Web-based television network offering a mix of Hollywood movies and new shows, comparable to Time Warner Inc.’s HBO.
