Despite A Great Cast, 'The Counselor' Gets Lost In A Crazed Mess Of A Script

Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Brad Pitt Javier Bardem Cameron Diaz Penelope Cruz

The Counselor is the latest film from No Country for Old Men writer Cormac McCarthy, making his screenwriting debut alongside director Ridley Scott, with a film that explores the complexities of hustling, and the fact that no matter how big a shark you think you are, there's always a bigger one swimming nearby.

The Counselor
Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender make up part of an impressive cast

The premise and the names attached tot he film all looked as though they fit into place, and The Counselor seemed to be the latest hot Oscar contender, however, upon closer inspection it looks as though the pieces were too big after all, and the film looks unlikely to stand up to expectation.

Hollywood Is "Behind The Curve" When It Comes To Gay Characters, GLAAD Announce

Ben Whishaw Javier Bardem

When it comes to representing the gay community via popular characters, TV is way ahead of film, according to GLAAD, who have released a rather interesting studio ranking, based on leading homosexual characters in movies.

The list sees Universal performing at an ‘adequate’ level, with 25% of their films featuring LGBT character appearances. Sony and Paramount were also adequate, while Fox, with 0%, and Disney, with 7.7% are ‘failing’.

New Clips & Trailer For Ridley Scott's 'The Counsellor' Debut Online [Video]

Ridley Scott Brad Pitt Javier Bardem Michael Fassbender Penelope Cruz

The Counsellor is a clever new thriller from the creative mind of Sir Ridley Scott and screenwriter Cormac McCarthy, in which a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) decides to try and make a little extra money on the side by selling cocaine. Over the course of the film, he learns that there is no such thing as easy money, especially not in the drug trade, as he begins to meet and mix with some unsavoury character (even worse than lawyers, we're led to believe) and has to work out who his real friends are in this new, powdery life, that's if he even has any in the first place.

Will Sam Mendes Be Able To Replicate Skyfall's Success?

Sam Mendes Daniel Craig Idris Elba Javier Bardem

The news that Sam Mendes – who helmed the most successful Bond of all time – is returning for the 24th incarnation of 007 will come as a huge relief for fans of the franchise. Skyfall was praised for its modern, innovative approach to the Bond saga and won Mendes many plaudits, but will his next efforts win him an Oscar?

Sam MendesMendes with Skyfall's antagonist, Javier Bardem

Skyfall did in fact win two Academy Awards, but they went to Adele for her Bond theme and one for the sound engineering team. The film was, however, the most successful film in the franchise – a wonderful achievement despite the fact that every Bond film has risen exponentially in popularity.

Is 'The Counselor' Set For The Oscars? [Trailer]

Ridley Scott Brad Pitt Penelope Cruz Cameron Diaz Javier Bardem Michael Fassbender Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro

The trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming gritty thriller The Counselor dropped yesterday, after the initial teaser was circulated in cryptic Russian. With a November release date, there's certainly enough time to build up anticipation for the film, which is written by No Country For Old Men screenwriter, Cormac McCarthy.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender Filming A Scene From The Counselor

There may be added logic to the late-2013 release date however: to give itself the best chances for 2014 Oscars consideration. The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame, Prometheus) who plays a lawyer who gets involved in cocaine trafficking and ends up in over his head with the wrong people. According to First Showing, Fassbender teams up in business with a rich acquaintance, played by Bardem, as Pitt's shady criminal character comes out of the shadows as things take a turn for the worst. In an incredible cast, Fassbender's co-stars include Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.Despite their cinematic fame and success, neither Scott nor Pitt have ever won an Oscar before, with Pitt apparently resigning himself to never winning, having said: "I don't play the Oscars game." November release dates tend to be awards friendly, due to being late enough to not be forgotten amongst the year's other cinematic releases but not too late as to have not made enough of an impression.

Bigas Luna Dies: Proteges Javier Bardem And Penelope Cruz Lead Tributes To Late Director

Penelope Cruz Javier Bardem

The Spanish director Josep Joan Bigas Luna, who can count Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz among his acting discoveries, has died at the premature age of 67.

The BBC reports that Bigas Luna died after a long battle with cancer at his home in Tarragona, northeast Spain. One of the biggest influential film makers in the country, he also had an eye for talent – Javier Bardem’s first role was in Bigas Luna’s 1990 film The Ages Of Lulu. "I don't know where to begin," Bardem said in a statement, adding that he owed the director "the woman I love" and "a career that I never dreamed I could have". Cruz also went for a role in The Ages Of Lulu and though she didn’t get the role, her first meeting with the director apparently changed her life. "In walked a man with a rascal's face: Bigas Luna," she said in her own statement "The first thing he asked me was my age [she was 14]. I said I was 17 and he, always very gently and without making me feel too bad, laughed in my face and said: `Well, you won't make this movie, but I'll call for another when you're older."'

True enough he did get in touch with her three years later, to star in Jamon, Jamon alongside Bardem. It was the first time the pair met and they went on to get married. Both have starred in Bigas Luna films since as well, with Barden appearing in 1993's Golden Balls and 1994's Le teta y la luna and Cruz in 1999’s Volaverunt, before going on to win a best supporting Oscar in 2009 for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Can Oscar Darling Ben Affleck Save Malick's To The Wonder? (Trailer)

Terrence Malick Ben Affleck Rachel McAdams Javier Bardem

Ahead of its full U.S. release, a full theatrical trailer has been released for Terrence Malick's latest movie 'To The Wonder', about a couple from Oklahoma who run into problems after moving to Mont Saint-Michel - an rocky tidal island near Normandy, France.

Marina, played by Olga Kurylenko meets a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his vocation, while Neil, played by Ben Affleck, renews ties with childhood friend Jane (Rachel McAdams). Let us not beat around the bush here: critics hated Terrence Malick's latest effort and the reclusive filmmaker is probably beginning to divide critics more than even he would like. Tim Robey of the Daily Telegraph said, "The movie wants to explore looming crises of faith, but for Malick fans it's in serious danger of entailing one." Time Out said, "There's a phoniness to the film's people and places that keeps us at a fatal distance from the big ideas with which 'To the Wonder' seeks to engage us." There's a huge problem here. Malick presumably chose Mont Saint-Michel as its considered one of the most mythical and intriguing places on the planet. If it appears phony on-screen then 'To The Wonder' is done for.

Skyfall Wins Big Twice At The Evening Standard Awards

Sam Mendes Daniel Craig Javier Bardem Toby Jones Andrea Riseborough Adele

Skyfall is one of the biggest films to ever come out of Britain, and James Bond is one of its most iconic characters. It's fitting, then, for it to win plenty of awards, especially given that it was largely snubbed by the Oscars. Having won both Film of the Year and Blockbuster of the Year at the Evening Standard Awards, it seems it is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

As the Guardian reports, the Evening Standard editor, Sarah Sands said: "Thanks in part to the extraordinary success of Skyfall - a truly big British movie, delivered with a panache Hollywood could envy - 2012 also highlighted the creativity, vision and talent of a new generation of British film-makers, actors and actresses."

Taking over a billion dollars worldwide, as well as over £100m domestically, Skyfall wasn't always a sure-fire success, particularly given that the last feature Sam Mendes had directed was Away We Go (a far, far cry from the fast paced, slick style of a Bond movie). However, the combination of Mendes, a Daniel Craig Bond, a Javier Bardem baddy and its title song from woman of the moment, Adele, seems to have been the recipe for success.

Penelope Cruz Pregnant; Second Bambino On The Way

Penelope Cruz Javier Bardem

Hollywood's Spanish dream team are expecting their second bambino, is has been announced. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are to give birth another baby, according to US Weekly.

A source also told E! that the "Volver" actress was "around three months" pregnant. It's clear, from an interview with Vogue in 2011, that Cruz relishes motherhood. "From the first second, you feel so much love," she explained in the June edition of the fashion magazine. "It is a revolutionary experience. That's the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment, when you see that face, you are transformed forever."

It's going to a busy year ahead for the Cruz clan, with Penelope's sister Monica also expecting. The Agent Provocateur model and mom-to-be, 35, announced the news in a post titled "My Life's Dream" earlier this month. "I'm going to be a mother!" she wrote in Spanish. "I have managed to fulfill the dream of a lifetime. Because of that, I want to share with all of you this special journey and be able to tell you about all of my experiences during this fascinating time..."

BAFTA 2013: Judi Dench Recognised At Last, Skyfall Looms Large In Nominations

Judi Dench Sam Mendes Javier Bardem Daniel Day Lewis

Judi Dench has finally found BAFTA recognition for her role as M in the James Bond movies. This year, the latest Bond movie, directed by British director Sam Mendes has received no fewer than eight nominations, in a year when at last, the 50 year old Bond franchise looks as though it could be in the running for an Oscar.

Dench’s appearance in Skyfall marked the last time that the veteran actress would play the role of M in the James Bond movies and finally, she has been recognised by the BAFTAs for her contribution to the world famous franchise, with a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Skyfall has also received nods for Outstanding British Film, Cinematography, Best Supporting Actor (for Javier Bardem), Editing Original Music, Production Design and Sound. No nod for Daniel Craig, though, the star of the movie.

Amanda Berry, chief executive of BAFTA, said “The public have really taken the film to their hearts, they went to see it in their droves internationally," the Telegraph reports. “Javier Bardem was the most amazing baddie so it's great to see him nominated too… Judi Dench was first nominated in 1966 as outstanding newcomer. She's never been nominated as M before, and it felt like her role was bigger this time. It was also her last performance. I just think it was a terrific film, really well made, with an outstanding cast.” Skyfall was just pipped to the post in terms of the number of nominations it received, by the movie Lincoln, starring Daniel Day Lewis.

Channing Tatum Is Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Ryan Gosling Fans Go Crazy

Channing Tatum Ryan Gosling Mel Gibson Nick Nolte George Clooney Brad Pitt Tom Cruise Richard Gere Johnny Depp Javier Bardem

Channing Tatum has been named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2012, beating the likes of Ben Affleck, Denzel Washington and last year's winner Bradley Cooper in the process. The result confirms the fact that People magazine really, really, hate Ryan Gosling

Tatum joins a select club of Hollywood stars who have taken the title since the magazine began the feature in 1985. Mel Gibson, Nick Nolte, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Richard Gere and Johnny Depp have been named the sexiest man alive, though the title still evades Ryan Gosling. Some of the Blue Valentine star's fans have already begun bashing their heads against keyboards across the globe. One user said, "channing tatum definitely isn't the sexiest man alive tho like what about joseph gordon levitt OR ryan gosling HELLO PEOPLE," while another said, "Eh, Channing Tatum sexiest man alive? I still think we have to give it up for Ryan Gosling, guy always gets the short end of the stick." Poor old Ryan. Anyway, Tatum, 32, hails from Alabama and is best known for a couple of soppy romantic-comedies, though turned in an excellent comedic performance in 21 Jump Street. Speaking in the latest issue of People magazine, the actor says he's ready to begin a family with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, "I'm ready; I think she's ready. The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we'll see where we go after that. It's really easy for us guys to say, 'I want like 15 kids. Jenna will be like, 'Well you better get another wife!"

The special issue of the magazine also hands out awards in other category, including Men of the Year, Sexy At Every Age and Hot Dogs (a list of Hollywood's dog lovers). Ryan Gosling got a nod in the latter, while Javier Bardem made it only to the scary sounding 50 Shades of Grey.

James Bond Skyfall Set To Light Up The U.S Box Office

Daniel Craig Javier Bardem Idris Elba

After great commercial and critical success in the U.K, the 23rd instalment of James Bond, Skyfall, is set to take the U.S Box Office by storm, passing the impressive hauls raked in by former Bond films, The Los Angeles Reports.

According to industry experts and those who have seen pre-release audience surveys, the iconic spy franchise, which this year stars Javier Bardem pitting his wits as the Villain against now three-time Bond, Daniel Craig, could glean over $70m, to add to an impressive take worldwide. The film has already grossed $320 million overseas in 12 days of release, which includes a successful reception from Bond's native U.K audience. With figures like these, and considering Quantum of Solace - the last time Craig donned the famous tux  - managed $67.5m, the outlook is good for Skyfall. In addition to a strong marketing campaign stateside, the film's strong set of reviews, and a formidable 98% on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, have turned critics towards predicting an incredibly strong U.S audience.

Bond's run has been remarkable in the U.S, which is strange considering how much of a British institution it is. Every one of the 22 movies has grossed better than the last, which is a staggering achievement for a franchise with so many entries. It's testament to the strength of the 007 name that it still outdoes itself every year, but perhaps Bond will have to adapt to continue to perform. And rumours of Idris Elba as the next super spy, and the first black one, suggest it's moving in that direction. James Bond's Skyfall is out tomorrow, Nov 9th.

Daniel Craig's Skyfall To Sweep US Box Office: But Should Javier Bardem Have Been 007?

Javier Bardem Daniel Craig Sam Mendes Ralph Fiennes Judi Dench Steven Spielberg

Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes bring their James Bond leviathan Skyfall to U.S. shores this weekend, with box-office analytics predicting a huge opening that should far exceed the debut $67.5 million taken by Quantum of Solace in November 2008.

Skyfall is buoyed by massive showings overseas, superb reviews, an Oscars buzz and, of course, the partnership of Craig and Mendes. Sony has given a conservative estimate of $67 million (perhaps considering the effects of Hurricane Sandy), though Skyfall is likely to fly past that figure. The critically acclaimed movie opens in IMAX at 12.01am tonight (November 8, 2012), and everywhere else at 12.01am on Friday. Though few can deny Daniel Craig his position amongst Bond's finest actors, it all could have been very different, as Javier Bardem explained in a recent interview with Cinema Blend. The actor - who himself gives a gripping performance as villain Raoul Silva in Skyfall - revealed that he was offered the opportunity to play Bond earlier in his career. "Years ago, I was. I don't remember what movie it was for. But yeah, it just was not that time. I didn't feel that it was the time for me to do something like that. And also, I was doing something else, so I passed," he said. It's likely that Bardem was offered the role shortly before Pierce Brosnan was cast for Goldeneye in the early 1990s. The Spanish star has since gone on to win an Oscar (No Country for Old Men) and insists, "I have passed on many things that I could easily regret, but I don't regret any of them, because that also gives room for something else to come that I'm proud of."

Though Skyfall, also featuring Ralph Fiennes and Judi Dench, is likely to storm the box-office this weekend, it does face some notable competition. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln opens on a limited release in 11 cities (expanding Nov 16), while 18th Century historical drama A Royal Affair also gets a limited release.

Javier Bardem Opens Up On What It Is To Be A Bond Villain

Javier Bardem Daniel Craig Barbara Broccoli James Bond

Daniel Craig's third outing as James Bond in Skyfall has been lauded, as has the film itself, by fans and critics alike. But perhaps the unsung hero in the Bond film, is, ironically, the villain. "We've always said, any Bond film is only as good as the villain," explained producer Barbara Broccoli.

Javier Bardem's version of the Bond Villain - the 23rd of its kind in cinematic form - is excellent. He's gone from tear-jerking (and we mean tear-jerking) roles in Biutiful, to silent killer in No Country For Old Men, and the alchemy of the two: enigmatic and heartfelt, are facets of his performance in Skyfall that have lead to people calling him the best Bond Villain ever. "The guy is really, really confident about himself in a weird way. He definitely thinks he's the most beautiful man in the world," Bardem tells USA Today. "You have to work on two different levels," he adds. "One is to make him as real as possible. And the other is to fly a little bit higher than the rest of the characters. You are allowed to do that. Because that is what people are expecting to see when you play a Bond villain, especially since the films are turning 50 years."

America get their IMAX taste of Bond tomorrow (Nov 8th), with the general release happening the day after.

Skyfall Breaks Box Office Record, But Is It Set For Oscars Snub?

Sam Mendes Daniel Craig Judi Dench Javier Bardem Steven Spielberg

Skyfall, the new movie in the James Bond franchise, has enjoyed the highest grossing weekend of any film in the series. Thousands of fans queued in cinemas across the length and breadth of the country to see Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench and Javier Bardem star in Sam Mendes' highly rated action romp.

The film, which for a short time held a perfect 100% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregating website, pulled in £20.1 million at the UK box office, which is also the biggest opening of the year. The total also represents the second largest gross ever for an opening weekend, after last year's final instalment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Skyfall topped the charts in 24 overseas markets though is yet to open at the hugely lucrative U.S. box office, where it his eagerly anticipated. Attention is already turning to the next movie - set to be based on a two-part original story by John Logan - though first there's the small matter of awards season. Mendes' film is tipped by many industry insiders for an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, though the bookmakers remain certain it will not challenge for the major honors come February. In fact, Irish bookmaker Paddy Paddy doesn't even include Skyfall in its first twenty movies challenging for the prize of Best Picture. It has Steven Spielberg's Lincoln at 4/1 favourite with the indie-drama Silver Linings Playbook at 9/2. Comic book caper The Avengers is available at 50/1, though there's no sign of Bond.

It may well be the quick thinking punters who placed money on Skyfall weeks ago that have the last laugh. Stranger things have happened at the Oscars, and Sam Mendes is a hugely respected directed among the Academy. Should 007 pick up a nomination on January 10, 2013, just don't say we didn't warn you.

Can Skyfall Be The Bond To Win That Elusive Oscar?

Daniel Craig Sam Mendes Judi Dench Javier Bardem

James Bond can save the world and get the girl; he's proved that over 50 films, but he's only managed 7 nominations and won two academy awards in all that time.

Can Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes buck the trend of supposed genre snobbery from the Oscars voters? Well, hiring a cast of seasoned winners won't hurt their chances. Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney with 2 Oscars and 16 nominations between them will undoubtedly boost the franchise's chances of permeating the Bond-hoax when it comes to winning at the Academy Awards. Daniel Radcliff has previously bemoaned the apparent snobbery surrounding franchises, as his Harry Potter films failed to win big on the biggest film night of the year, according to the Independent. We have a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't quite snobbery, but the fact that the Harry Potter films weren't that good, and as for his performance as the young wizard? Well this is a family site. Bond's new dark persona, and the fact that first time Bond director Mendes has three nomination under his belt means the Oscar buzz is probably justified this time.

The stars will be descending upon London's Leicester Square as the 23rd Bond film premieres tonight. Stay close to Contact Music for any news. We could have gone if we wanted to, but it's more fun telling you about it.

100% Rating: Is Skyfall The Best Bond Movie Ever?

Sam Mendes Daniel Craig Helen McCrory Ralph Fiennes Javier Bardem Judi Dench Neal Purvis Robert Wade John Logan

Sam Mendes must be feeling pretty smug right now. The director of Skyfall, the latest James Bond movie, has scored an impeccable 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews site.

This will make excellent Monday morning news for Mendes, as well as the movie’s stars. The cast list includes Daniel Craig, of course, who plays the lead role, as well as Helen McCrory, Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Dame Judi Dench.

Skyfall has received a resounding round of applause from critics across the board; even the most cynical of movie reviewers seems to have struggled to find any cracks in this latest offering from the Bond franchise. Writing for the Hollywood Reporter, Todd McCarthy wrote that Skyfall “Feels more seriously connected to real-world concerns than any previous entry, despite the usual outlandish action scenes, glittering settings and larger-than-life characters,” making the movie a credit both to its scriptwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Equally, Variety’s Peter Debruge remarked that Skyfall puts the “’intelligence’ in MI6. Skyfall reps a smart, savvy and incredibly satisfying addition to the 007 oeuvre.”

Ben Whishaw: Slicker Version Of Q, Or Just Nerdier?

Ben Whishaw Daniel Craig Javier Bardem Ralph Fiennes Judi Dench

Ben Whishaw isn't exactly a household name yet, though you may recognise him from films such as Perfume: Story of a Murderer, or BBC dramas The Hour and Criminal Justice, but he soon will be in his new role as Q in the new Bond movie 'Skyfall' with Daniel Craig.

2012 is the 50th anniversary of the iconic British movie franchise and as such excitement for the new film is higher than ever. Adele's theme for Skyfall (of the same name) was released last week and the coming fortnight will no doubt prove to heighten the energy surrounding the film.

Whishaw, speaking to ShortList, spoke about his version of Q and said: "I deliberately didn't [study the actors]...What I did do was watch all the early [Bond films] that Q isn't in. It felt like a chance for a fresh start so I didn't want to be bogged down in [previous Q performances]... He's slicker this time. He's still an eccentric, jovial English chap but, because of the genius he has, there's a lethal, powerful side to him. Although he does make a mistake I can't tell you about."
