Calling all copy editors: Jay-Z has dropped the hyphen from his name and will, forever more, be known as...Jay Z! The news comes from the Holy Grail rapper's Roc Nation label, who reportedly informed Billboard editor Joe Levy of the change.

Levy tweeted: "Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note."

Some followers on Twitter suggested that Hova actually made the move a couple of years though, to which Levy replied, "Didn't take, though. The hyphen is strong."

"Didn't take anywhere. NYT, all media, fans. Or the cover of [Blueprint III], for that matter. iTunes credits 'JAY Z'; cover says 'JAY-Z'," he continued.

Why Jay-Z has chosen to remove the hyphen is unclear, though it's probably just being used as a little added promotion for Magna Carta Holy Grail, which hit the No.1 spot on the Billboard albums chart this. The hip-hop icon's twelfth studio album also topped the charts in the UK - Jay-Z's first number one in the country.

Jay isn't the first rapper to change his established moniker. Last year, Snoop Dogg announced he had changed his name to Snoop Lion, for.well, no reason at all really. The whole thing didn't work too well and everyone sort of started calling him Snoop Dogg again.

What do you think of Jay-Z's hyphen-dropping antics?
