The Empire State of Mind hitmaker relaunched the brand in March (15) with new investors including his wife Beyonce, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Rihanna and Daft Punk.

The stars faced a lot of criticism from fans and artists alike, amid concerns the company's subscription fees and lack of a free service, which is provided by rival Spotify, could drive music-lovers back to illegal downloads, but on Tuesday (29Sep15), Jay Z announced the service had gone "platinum".

"'Nothing real can be threatened, nothing unreal exists," he writes in a rare Twitter post. "Tidal is platinum. 1,000,000 people and counting. Let's celebrate 10/20 Brooklyn."

No further details about the party plans had been released as WENN went to press.

The subscriber news emerges two months after Madonna spoke out to defend Tidal following its rocky relaunch, insisting, "It's just the beginning".

The pop superstar used the service to debut her video for B**ch I'm Madonna in June (15), but the promo release was marred by technical problems. Representatives for the company subsequently issued an apology for the glitch, which prevented some users from viewing the video premiere at the time of its big reveal.

However, Madonna was adamant the "kinks" would soon be worked out, adding, "Hopefully we're going to build something unique and amazing that's going to attract a lot of people."

"It's important that people understand we didn't create Tidal, we didn't put this together, we didn't all join forces because we're broke and we want more money," she told The Associated Press. "The idea is we want to support other artists and we want people to understand this is our heart, this is our work, and we want people to recognise that and we want other artists to have a chance.

"We live in a society now where everybody just expects everything to be for free, but you don't get a house for free; you have to pay somebody to build it."
