'Somebody To Love' drummer Joey Covington has died after his car smashed into a wall.

Joey Covington, self-taught drummer for influential psychedelic 60s/70s group Jefferson Airplane, was killed in a car crash in Palm Springs, California, on Tuesday, it has emerged.

No one else was injured as Covington - who wasn't wearing a seatbelt - drove his Honda Civic head-on into a wall, according to TMZ.com. Despite bystanders' attempts to revive the rocker, he was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known what made his car career off the road but police speaking to The Desesrt Sun newspaper say alcohol or drugs are not suspected.

Known for his band's hits, 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit', Covington was driving alone as his car hit a wall with such force it flew "onto an elevated driveway several feet above the crash site."

67 year-old Covington moved to Palm Springs to return after a successful career as a musician, contributing to several hit songs with both Jefferson Airplane and the earlier Jefferson Starship.

Covington's performed publicly for the final time, last Saturday, as he agreed to play a free gig at Marilyn Manson's celebration.
