The actress continues to advocate for positive body image.
Jennifer Lawrence, who has advocated for body positivity throughout her career is out on a mission again. In an interview with Barbara Walters, which the Oscar winner gave as part of Walters’ Ten Most Fascinating People Of 2013, Lawrence took on her latest target – the word “fat” being used in media.
Lawrence is one of Barbara Walters' most fascinating people of 2013.
"Why is humiliating people funny? I get it, and, and I do it too, we all do it. (But) the media needs to take responsibility for the affect that it has on our younger generation, on these girls who are watching these television shows, and picking up how to talk and how to be cool... " said Lawrence, via Hollywood.com.
Lawrence has spoken out about body image in the past.
This isn’t the first time Lawrence has touched on the issue, of course. Last month, the Hunger Games actress had a minor falling out with Fashion Police host and comedienne Joan Rivers, claiming the idea of the programme teaches youths the "wrong values". Rivers spoke her mind to Lawrence in a tweet, calling the actress arrogant and that was that. Since then, the 23-year-old actress hasn’t taken aim at anyone specific, however her campaign against negative media influence, especially on young people’s body image, continues.
The actress' comments even led to a conflict with Joan Rivers.
"And the word fat, I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV," Lawrence also said to Barbara Walters. “I mean, if we're regulating cigarettes and sex and cuss words, because of the affect they have on our younger generation, why aren't we regulating things like calling people fat?"
The full interview with Walters is scheduled to air in the U.S. today (18Dec13).
