Jennifer Lawrence has added her voice to the dismay of millions of disappointed voters in the wake of Donald Trump’s shock election win earlier this week, penning an emotional op-ed in which she calls for Hillary Clinton supporters to get “enraged”.

The 26 year old, who was recently named as the highest-earning female actor in the world for her roles in X-Men as well as a string of critically acclaimed films, wrote an open letter for Broadly in which she urged people who are angry to turn that energy into positive change.

“Is this the stark reality?” the letter begins. “It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how qualified you are, at the end of the day, you’re not a man? Is that what we just learned? This country was founded on immigration and today the only people that feel safe, that their rights are recognized and respected are white men.”

Large numbers of people have taken to the streets of various American cities in protest in the days following the controversial Trump’s unexpected victory on Tuesday, which flew in the face of pollsters’ predictions. Lawrence called for this emotion to be channelled into something more positive.

“Do not let this defeat you — let this enrage you!” Lawrence writes. “Let it motivate you! Let this be the fire you didn’t have before. If you are an immigrant, if you are a person of color, if you are LGBTQ+, if you are a woman — don’t be afraid, be loud!”

Lawrence grabbed headlines in the summer of 2015 for another open letter she wrote about the gender pay gap in Hollywood, which was published via her friend Lena Dunham’s newsletter Lenny. Urging women to not be defeated by what happened in the week, she tapped into the same spirit as that letter.

“We’re all allowed to be sad that the present isn’t what we thought it was,” Lawrence added. “But we mustn’t be defeated. We will keep educating ourselves and working twice as hard as the man next to us because we know now that it is not fair. It is not fair in the workplace, so you make it impossible to fail.”
