It was a familiar sight at the top of the box office this weekend, with Hunger Games: Catching Fire dominating proceedings at the summit, while Frozen – a newcomer for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend – debuted with a strong second-place performance.

The Francis Lawrence-directed, Jennifer Lawrence-starring epic has dominated cinematic proceedings over the past few weeks, and the holiday weekend pushed it towards the $300m mark with an added $74.5m to the ever-growing total. It now stands at $573m worldwide, and is the third-highest grossing film domestically this year, with a good chance of reaching the $409m mark set by Iron Man 3.

As predicted, Disney’s animated, festive musical Frozen pulled in the family vote with a brilliant start. $66.7m changed hands so people to check out the cleverly placed film, and with fresh impetus coming through the week and into next weekend, it should level out somewhere near the $250m mark, with $300m not an unrealistic prospect.

With The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug coming out midway through December, Frozen’s tail might be snipped, with families and kids likely to choose Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy tale for their festive viewing. People are predicting big things for the second film in the trilogy, which hits theatres on December 13th.

Back to the Thanksgiving weekend, though, and the difference between 2nd and 3rd was stark, with Thor pulling in just over $11m. Now in its 4th week of release, the Marvel superhero flick can’t be blamed for the drop in figures, and a worldwide gross of nearly $600m will make for a happy studio.

Elsewhere, The Best Man Holiday grabbed a further $8.4m, and rounding out the top 5 was Homefront, which pulled in a meek $6.97m on its opening weekend. Delivery Man ($6.9m), The Book Thief ($4.85m), Black Nativity ($3.8m), Philomena ($3.7m) and Last Vegas ($2.78m) complete the top 10. (Box Office Mojo)
