The 9 to 5 hitmaker signed a development deal with bosses at U.S. network NBC to executive produce a number of stand alone movies based on her life and music, and the first project is based on Parton's 1971 autobiographical song.

The film will chronicle Parton's struggles as the child of a poverty-stricken family.

Nettles, who recently finished a stint in Broadway's Chicago, has been cast as Parton's mum, while former child star Ricky Schroder will portray the singer's dad, and veteran actor Gerald MCRaney will take on the role as Dolly's grandfather.

Coat of Many Colors is set to air as part of NBC's 2015-2016 season.
