Very Good

The quality of the animation in this musical comedy may not be up to Pixar standards, but the story and characters are thoroughly endearing. And the music is fabulous. As it follows a group of likeable animals through a variety of plots and adventures, there's plenty for everyone in the audience to connect with. So even if the climactic action mayhem gets a bit ridiculous, the movie keeps us laughing. And it also makes us want to get up on that stage and belt out a few numbers.

It's set in a city populated by animals. Buster (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) is a koala who has been obsessed with musical theatre since he saw the diva Nana (Jennifer Hudson then Jennifer Saunders) perform when he was a child. So he grew up and bought the theatre. Now with audiences waning, he stages a musical competition to save the theatre. In the auditions, he selects his finalists: anarchist porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson), jazzy mafioso mouse Mike (Seth MacFarlane) and silky voiced gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton). He also teams up two pigs as a double-act: frazzled housewife Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) and German dancer Gunter (Nick Kroll). There's also golden-voiced elephant Meena (Tori Kelly), who's too shy to face the audience so takes a role backstage. Of course, nothing goes as planned.

The key conflict comes from Buster's frantic efforts to avoid bankruptcy, plus rather half-hearted action subplots involving a gang of bears and Johnny's criminally minded relatives. These generate quite a bit of tension that erupts into rather outrageously destructive slapstick along the way. More interesting are the personal journeys of the various contestants, especially as Ash, Meena and Johnny all discover their voices and Rosita finds inventive ways to balance her long-lost career with her role as a mother to 25 rambunctious piglets. Yes, the film is rather crowded with characters and storylines, and the animation looks plasticky, but everything comes together cleverly,

'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie' stylist wanted Edina Monsoon's to have four camel toes.

The costume designer Rebecca Hale has admitted she wanted Edina's (Jennifer Saunders) character to have a ''fourth camel hoof'' caused by an ill-fitting pair of trousers that are hitched up too high they gather around the crotch area, but decided against the idea because she wanted to ''tone down'' her eccentric fashion sense.

Speaking to Fashionista.com about her wardrobe choices for the comedy duo, she said: ''And the trousers will always have a camel hoof.

I hadn't been out for over a year and I was really looking forward to it. It was an early showing at 6pm so there wasn't many people in the cinema.”

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Review

OK

Nearly 25 years after the sitcom debuted, Edina and Patsy arrive on the big screen to continue their drunken antics, although without the usual enthusiastic laugh-track everything feels eerily muted. Thankfully, there's still a lot of fun to be had, including well-aimed jabs at celebrity culture. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are still hilarious in their signature roles. And it's hard to get too worried about the limp plot when every scene is packed with amusing cameo appearances.

With her PR agency fading and her money spent on expanding her home, Edina (Saunders) discovers that her credit cards are "broken" and her champagne fridge is empty. So she and her pal Patsy (Lumley) set out to make some cash. After failing to sell her memoirs, Edina sets out to woo Kate Moss as a client. But this goes spectacularly wrong when Kate ends up falling off a balcony into the Thames. Now under investigation, Eddie and Pats flee to the South of France to find Patsy's wealthy ex (Barry Humphreys). They're chased by a detective (Robert Webb), who's the boyfriend of Edina's daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha), whose teen daughter (Indeharna Donaldson-Holness) has run off with them.

Written by Saunders, the script is very loose, bouncing around without much focus before a series of impatient, nonsensical conclusions. Basically, it's little more than a flimsy framework that includes brief scenes for series regulars (including Jane Horrock's airhead assistant, June Whitfield's dotty mum, Celia Imrie's rival PR and Kathy Burke's bulldog editor), plus a few new characters like Chris Colfer's stylist. All of these people have their moments, but never quite emerge as much more than comedy sketch figures. On the other hand, the big-screen format allows Saunders and Lumley to give Edina and Patsy a bit of surprising emotional depth amid the usual slapstick nuttiness.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wanted To Be In Absolutely Fabulous

Benedict Cumberbatch Absolutely Fabulous Jennifer Saunders Joanna Lumley

After running for six seasons over 21 years, from 1992 to 2013, the classic British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous arrives on the big screen in a flurry of champagne and cameos. Originally a short sketch on the French & Saunders show, the enduring characters have had a rather patchy ride, with some episodes funnier than others.

Benedict Cumberbatch at a Q&A with US President Barack Obama at London's Lindley Hall.

It was a year and a half ago that writer-star Jennifer Saunders was challenged by Dawn French to make the movie. "We were doing our New Year's show on Radio 2", Saunders says, "And Dawn said, 'What are you doing in the next year?' I said, 'I'm going to write the Ab Fab film.' She said, 'Alright. And if you don't, you have to pay me ten thousand pounds!' And I said, 'Okay.' It was the greatest incentive I ever had. I probably wouldn't have done it without that bet."

Has 'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie' Lived Up To Its Name?

Joanna Lumley Jennifer Saunders

The title 'Absolutely Fabulous' has turned out to be a bit of an over-statement for this movie according to the latest reviews, but generally it has wound up to be an enjoyable affair for fans of the TV show; quite a feat given that the majority of the cast aren't actually actors.

Absolutely FabulousAbsolutely Fabulous or absolutely vacuous?

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are back as Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in 'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie'. There's no denying that this duo is no less entertaining than they originally were in the television series, but the same can't be said for the other stars of the show. According to the Metro, the comedy was 'dampened by giving too much screen time to famous people who struggle to play themselves convincingly', while the Guardian agreed that it 'becomes less funny with every syllable that Stella [McCartney] is allowed to say' and described Kate Moss' performance as 'uncompromisingly wooden'.

Joanna Lumley Confirms Absolutely Fabulous Movie Is On The Way!

Joanna Lumley Jennifer Saunders

Joanna Lumley let us in on some frankly (absolutely) fabulous news today (Jan 25) when she revealed that the hit show Absolutely Fabulous is being made into a movie, and a musical one at that! Someone pass the champers!

Lumley, who plays the botox, cigarette, drink and drug addict Patsy Stone on the hit BBC comedy, told The Telegraph today that her co-star and the show's co-star/creator/writer Jennifer Saunders is currently hard at work on the script for the new film and it will be out in time for the Oscars in 2014 (and we're sure the film will be the one to beat when it comes to the awards).

Whilst the rumour that the hotly anticipated film adaption will be a musical remains just that, Lumley confirmed that she will be taking part in the production no matter what the outcome is. She said, "Although yesterday the press were saying it's a musical now! But whatever it is, I'll be there." Adding, "Nobody's going to play Patsy when I'm alive! I do mean that, I do mean that darling, because it could get savage, I'm still quite strong."

Joanna Lumley Receives Special Recognition Award At The National Television Awards

Joanna Lumley Jennifer Saunders Martin Scorsese Leonardo Dicaprio

Joanna Lumley, known mostly for her role as the hilariously loathsome narcissist Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous, alongside Jennifer Saunders, was celebrated with a Special Recognition Award last night at the National Television Awards.

She was lauded by her lovely co-star, Saunders, as well as multi-award winning director Martin Scorsese who worked with Lumley last year on Wolf of Wall Street (set to be released this year) via a series of clips in which they praised her. David Cameron was also in that number, although as a supporter of the Green Party that may not be received by Lumley with quite the emotion of her friends.

In Wolf of Wall Street a co-star of hers is Leonardo Dicaprio, whom she is seen kissing in the movie - a clip of which was played at the awards. Despite Ab Fab being one of her most iconic roles, she has also cropped up in a huge number of other roles including James and the Giant Peach, Ella Enchanted, and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

Spice Girls Together Again For 'Viva Forever!' Launch

Spice Girls Geri Horner Jennifer Saunders Melanie C

The Spice Girls have banded together for the second time this year for the launch of Jennifer Saunders' new musical based around their many hits.

Viva Forever! is the new Mamma Mia!-esque West End production about a girl band on the way to becoming superstars on a reality show; a story that has a lot of the same feelings as the Spice Girls own story of stardom. Geri Halliwell, formerly known as Ginger Spice, said that she felt 'tearful' because of the feelings it brought up. Starring in the show is Hannah John-Kamen as 'Wannabe' star Viva and Sally Ann Triplett in the role of her mother.

The show has received lukewarm reviews so far particularly from The Guardian and The Independent with Guardian reviewer Alexis Petridis saying: "The lyrics are required to drive the action on and the lyrics of Spice Girls songs are appalling." However, all those involved were pleased with the result; Saunders insists that she has enjoyed the whole experience. "It's a relief but I hope it won't stop now, because I've enjoyed it so much," she said. "I'll probably still call in every couple of weeks and hope they still know who I am." Melanie Chisholm, formerly Sporty Spice, thought that the Spice legacy was all down to their honesty in their music. "We really spoke from our hearts," she said. "We loved working together and writing music together, and we feel really lucky that people identified with us."

Shrek 2 Review

Very Good
When Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) pulls off his helmet to reveal a hairnet in the first minute of Shrek 2, it's clear the sequel intends to match the wit and style of its predecessor. Fortunately it succeeds, finding new targets for its fairy-tale bashing humor. The result is the kind of summer escapism you don't need to lower your expectations to enjoy.

The sequel begins where part one left off. Ogre Shrek (Mike Myers) and his now equally ogre-rific wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz) embark on a hilarious honeymoon montage, complete with mermaid-tossing. They return to find Donkey (Eddie Murphy) still fulfilling his role as "annoying talking animal." Before they can kick him out, however, they receive an invitation from Fiona's parents, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews), who want to meet their daughter's new husband. Unfortunately, they didn't see the first film, and have no idea that their daughter is now permanently of the green persuasion, as is their new son-in-law.
