Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson married longtime partner Justin Mikita in a private ceremony in New York this Saturday. PEOPLE Magazine reported on the wedding, which was officiated by playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner. In a fun little twist, Ferguson, who won an Emmy for his portrayal of uptight lawyer Mitchell Prichett on the ABC sitcom, tied the knot to Mikita, who is a real-life lawyer. The couple got engaged last year, during their vacation in Mexico. They had been together for two years before that. "Never been happier. XO Goodnight!" Ferguson tweeted early Sunday morning.

Ferguson and his husband have been together for over three years.

The couple normally reside in California, where same sex marriage is now legal, following the Supreme Court’s ruling, which deemed the infamous California Prop 8 unconstitutional. However, even before Prop 8 was overturned, the pair had reportedly made plans to get hitched in New York, “because that’s where it was legal, ” as Ferguson explained during a recent appearance on The View.

During the same interview, he said: "It wasn't legal in California up until yesterday. Weddings are expensive, y'all, and we wanted to give that money to a state that accepted us as an equal. We're too far down the planning path to change."

The couple specifically wanted to tie the knot in the more tolerant atmosphere of New York.

The couple had a relatively intimate ceremony, but reportedly planned to spare no expense when it came to the celebration. "We really want a great mixologist for a craft cocktail bar," Mikita told PEOPLE earlier this year. "There are some great New York speakeasies, like Milk and Honey. So we're trying to bring a cool vibe like that to our wedding."

And of course, there had to be a good cause involved somehow. Ferguson and Mikita asked their guests to donate to a charity, instead of spending money on wedding gifts. Fittingly, the couple’s charity of choice was Tie The Knot, an organisation working towards marriage equality in various states.
