Oscar Nominations Court Controversy

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Michael Keaton Common John Legend David Oyelowo Ava DuVernay Jake Gyllenhaal Jessica Chastain Amy Adams Jennifer Aniston Roger Ebert

The reaction to this week's Oscar nominations was a loud one, because Academy voters played it so safe in a year when films expanded to explore a diverse array of themes. Throughout 2014, actors and filmmakers bravely took on big challenges, and many were recognised with nominations. But critics have been quick to point out that all of the acting and directing nominees are white, and #OscarsSoWhite was the trending hashtag on Twitter.

The most obvious snub was for Selma, which only received nods for Best Picture and Best Song (for Common and John Legend's 'Glory'), leaving out the acclaimed actor David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay, who would have been the first African-American woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Interstellar Is A New Genre For Nolan

Christopher Nolan Anne Hathaway Matthew Mcconaughey Michael Caine Jessica Chastain Robin Williams Al Pacino

Over the past 15 years, Christopher Nolan has proven himself as a master of intelligent filmmaking, generally sticking to the psychological thriller genre while mixing in action and brain-bending flourishes. And now with Interstellar he has left the confines of Earth's gravity to head into science-fiction for the first time.

Intriguingly, Nolan has still maintained his commitment to in-camera effects even in this genre, refusing to indulge in flashy digital trickery just because he can. Like his last few films, he has also shot portions of the film in Imax, massive screen imagery photographed on film, not digitally, which gives the entire movie an earthy texture that's intriguingly realistic. This also focusses even the most existential and scientific discussions squarely on the characters.

About-Turn: Where Did It All Go Wrong For Zero Dark Thirty At The Oscars?

Jessica Chastain Kathryn Bigelow Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

The negative press surrounding Zero Dark Thirty, has slowly dragged the movie from being an Oscars favourite, to one of the evening’s biggest disappointments. Kathryn Bigelow’s political drama was nominated in the all-important Best Picture category (and was considered a forerunner before all the negative stories took attention away from the quality of the movie), as well as Best Actress for Jessica Chastain (again, she was considered a close favourite with the night’s winner, Jennifer Lawrence), Film Editing, Sound Editing (Paul NJ Ottosson was successful in this category, at least, sharing the award with Skyfall) and Writing – Original Screenplay.

Taking home just one award, from five nominations will have been a blow for the makers of Zero Dark Thirty. The reported “distortion” of the facts surrounding Osama Bin Laden’s capture, and the torture techniques portrayed in the movie cast a dark political shadow over Zero Dark Thirty and what had previously been enjoyed as a powerful political drama was now called into question, for its accuracy. Reports that the CIA had played a part in shaping the movie’s narrative did not go down well, either, as reports from political writers began to take precedence over the reviews of the film critics.

Despite the movie making it into the Best Picture category, Kathryn Bigelow was shunned from the Best Director award nominations and Chastain lost out on that Best Actress Oscar. It’s unclear exactly where everything went wrong for Zero Dark Thirty but the political debate surrounding the movie became too overbearing for its artistry to shine through and rather than the triumph we first expected, what we have seen instead is one of the sharpest about-turns in industry opinion in recent years.

Yeah sure, so winning The Oscars is pretty important, but don't kid yourself too much, it's what people are wearing on the Oscars red carpet that really interests the punters. This year's awards saw relatively few fashion mishaps, though on the other hand also lacked anyone really taking a chance with their outfit - understandable, perhaps, given the scale of the public platform they were all appearing on.

Writers Guild Win Adds To Zero Dark Thirty Momentum... But Is It In Time For The Oscars?

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

In The Oscars build-up the bulk of the attention has been on Ben Affleck and Argo, with the director and actor confounding the Academy’s decision to omit him from the best director shortlist by cleaning house at pretty much every awards event since. Affleck’s tale is a heartening one, given many feel he’s been wronged, but there was another director too who also had reason to feel aggrieved at her omission from the best director list – Zero Dark Thirty’s Kathryn Bigelow.

Marion Cotillard Jessica Chastain Sarah Jessica Parker Juno Temple Helen Mirren

Gemma Arterton, BAFTAS, 2013If Looks Could Kill! Gemma Arterton Eyes Up Young Actress Juno Temple

The Hollywood glitterati must have wondered why they’d bothered to turn up for the BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday night (February 10, 2013). On a frankly dismal evening in the nation’s capital, umbrellas were commonplace on the red-carpet with publicists, media types and event organisers running around like headless chickens, hastily attempting to give the press pack their photographs without drowning the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Chastain and Helen Mirren in the cold British rain and sleet. Best pals George Clooney and Ben Affleck were seen taking shelter under the same umbrella, while actress Gemma Arterton looked absolutely freezing as she waited for up-and-coming star Juno Temple to finish working it for the cameras.

In terms of awards, it was a relatively straight-forward evening, hosted with typical panache by everyone’s favourite Briton, Stephen Fry. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi performed strongly in the technical categories – as it is expected to do at the Oscars later this month – while Skyfall won Best British Film. However, it was Ben Affleck’s Argo that took the evening’s key prize – that of Best Picture – leaving Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln to settle for Best Actor, for the peerless Daniel Day-Lewis. Best Actress went to the 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, which left Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook director David O’Russell looking quite frankly bemused.

US Box Office Round-Up: Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters Lures Audiences In

Jeremy Renner Jessica Chastain Gemma Arterton

There was a new name at the top of the US Box Office charts after the weekend, with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters taking $19 million to knock last weekend’s leader Mama off the top.

In a take on the traditional tale that by no means suggested that success would be a foregone conclusion, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sees the two protagonists of the Grimm’s Tale grown up and working as bounty hunters, tracking down witches the world over. Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, the film just about met predictions, with Paramount president of distribution Don Harris commenting "We are pleased that we were on our number on a worldwide basis. It looks like we are on or exceeding our numbers but we did get dinged with the weather on Friday. The impact of the weather was certainly more than I had predicted." The US had extremely cold weather for the weekend.

In second place was Mama, the low-budget horror flick that surprised a little last weekend with its success, although less so when you consider it starred Jessica Chastain – one of the ascendant stars of the moment. She was also in the weekend’s fourth largest grossing film, Zero Dark Thirty. Sandwiched between that in third place, and still on its remarkable run, was Silver Linings Playbook, which took $10 million.;

Thinking Of Seeing 'Zero Dark Thirty', With Friends? A Controversy Cheat-Sheet!

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain Barack Obama

Hey, UK readers, planning on seeing Zero Dark Thirty with a couple of friends this weekend? Of course, you'll be aware it's an Oscar frontrunner. Of course, you'll be aware it's from the director of Hurt Locker, and yes, of course you'll be aware it stars Jessica Chastain and is about the 10 year hunt for Obama Bin Laden. But are you aware of the storm brewing across the pond? If not, here's a guide to the intense criticism the movie has faced in recent weeks.

Political points-scoring began in mid-to-late 2012, when some critics of the Obama Administration accused director Kathryn Bigelow and Sony Pictures of releasing the film in October so that it would support the re-election of President Obama - i.e, the man who gave the command to raid the complex in which Bin Laden was eventually killed. Sony denied the whole thing, stating that the initial release date was chosen because it was the best available spot for an action-thriller. Anyway, the release date was pushed back, but there was more to come.

Next, several Republican sources charged the Obama Administration of improperly providing Oscar-winner Bigelow with classified information about the raid (can you see a pattern emerging here?) The charges became a prevalent election season talking point, with congressman Peter T. Ling requesting that the CIA and the U.S. Defense Department investigate whether or not information was inappropriately released. Both departments said they would look into it, though documents showed no evidence that classified information was leaked to the filmmakers. There was more to come.

Chastain Tops The Box Office In Mama

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain has had quite the run in the past couple of years – seven films in 2011, four in 2012 – and with her recent award run with Zero Dark Thirty, the lady can afford to do a frivolous horror once in a while.

This is exactly what she’s done with Mama. The Guillermo Del Toro flick hasn’t exactly been wow-ing the critics. However, it is currently on top of the box office charts, far ahead of testosterone-driven offerings, like The Last Stand or Gangster Squad. It may be just that people are looking for something different, or that there weren’t that many good offerings this month, but, in any case, Chastain will be laughing all the way to the bank.

The actress herself describes the flick as a “slasher movie, but more complex” in an interview with The Huffington Post. She described her set experience as fun, “a big party”, but the movie itself as “scary” – a horror/drama, typical of Del Toro’s style. So, if you’re a hardcore Chastain fan (we definitely are), or if you just want some good ol’ fashion entertainment during this cold, gloomy month, Mama might be the right title to check out. You can watch the trailer below.

Jessica Chastain Was Told Not To Do Genre Movie For Guillermo Del Toro's Mama

Jessica Chastain Guillermo Del Toro

Guillermo Del Toro's latest movie, a horror titled Mama, has been largely panned by critics, with the plot seeing two children abandoned in a forest after their dad is killed, only to be found years later having become feral.

They move in with their aunt and uncle, but there is a strange 'figure' that moves into the house with them, that the children call 'Mama'. The dialogue is said to be poor, and editing has also been critqued, but for many the one saving grace of the whole sha-bang is Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain, in many ways, is a new kid on the block. Her career only began in 2004 when she had singular appearances in a few shows here and there. 2008 saw her appear in her first feature film, Jolene, but finally, 2011 rolled around and suddenly she is everywhere, literally- she was starring in 7 movies, including The Help for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence battle over Best Actress, Denzel Washington and Daniel Day-Lewis meet over Best Actor And Anne Hathaway favorite for Best Supporting Actress. While Iceman (James Franco, Winona Ryder) and Mud (Matthew McConnaughey and Reese Witherspoon) Trailers Hit The Web.

It's awards season for the film industry, so it's no coincidence that most stories this week centre on actors and filmmakers who are up for a variety of statuettes. Last Sunday's Golden Globes are increasingly seen as a little more than a promotional opportunity for hopeful Oscar nominees, and since they have winners in both drama and musical/comedy categories, they can spread the love around more than other groups. Unlike most years, there is no movie poised to sweep the Oscars this year.

Although Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty is gaining on her, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook is the front-runner for Best Actress. Facing a huge crowd of fans, she stopped to sign autographs and pose for photos on her way to David Letterman's show this week.

Hot Tickets! US Movie Releases: Jessica Chastain Stars In Creepy Thriller 'Mama,' Arnie Makes A Comeback In 'The Last Stand,' Mark Wahlberg's 'Broken City' Is A Doozy

Jessica Chastain Benicio Del Toro Arnold Schwarzenegger Johnny Knoxville Forest Whitaker Mark Wahlberg Russell Crowe Catherine Zeta Jones Daniel Radcliffe Elizabeth Olsen Ben Foster

With Jessica Chastain nominated for an Oscar for her role in Zero Dark Thirty. Her presence in Mama, alone, should be enough to generate interest in Guillermo Del Toro’s latest supernatural thriller. Anyone expecting a Zero Dark Thirty-style action drama, though, will be sorely disappointed. And possibly a little scared.

Chastain plays the role of Annabel, a woman who welcomes her partner’s abandoned nieces into her home. They are traumatised and clearly disturbed. Annabel seems unsure whether or not she’s ready to look after them. Little does she know, however, that she’s opened the doors of her home to more than just the two young girls, who disappeared the day that their mother was murdered by their father. More of a psychological horror than a guts-n-gore kind of movie, del Toro knows exactly how to get inside the viewer’s mind and linger there, with his superb use of special effects and the kind of suspense tactics that will require the surgical removal of your fingers from the cinema seat by the time the movie’s over.

“Mama succeeds in scaring the wits out of us and leaving some lingering, deeply creepy images ...” Richard Roeper – Chicago Sun-Times

Guillermo Del Toro's New Film 'Mama' Panned By Critics

Guillermo Del Toro Jessica Chastain

Guillermo Del Toro is responsible for Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage, two beautifully made films, both of which utilise conventions of horror. His well told plot lines and great cinematography have made Del Toro's films a treat to watch over and over again. What has gone wrong then, with his latest scary flick, which has been completely panned by critics?

It's certainly not the cast, as it stars Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain. According to TIME Magazine, the script really let it down. "Mama is clumsily written and choppily edited, but Chastain doesn't have a bad scene in it, and you can see why she chose to be in this supernatural ghost story." They said. Village Voice just thinks that for a horror it isn't scary enough, saying that it "never delivers the primal terror its premise would suggest." Rolling Stone, in contrast says "the film knows how to creep you out," despite it looking like a 'cheapie fright flick'.

However, in the film's favour, perhaps these critics are merely well seasoned in horror, because the Chicago Sun Times said: "Mama succeeds in scaring the wits out of us and leaving some lingering, deeply creepy images ..."

This Is Torture! Just Go See Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain John McCain

The torture scandal surrounding Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar nominated movie Zero Dark Thirty has somewhat marred the acclaimed movie's release, though the message from its creators is clear: go and watch film as it is supposed to be enjoyed, in a movie theatre free of propaganda, criticism, and silly American politicians.

The movie - starring Jessica Chastain and focusing on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden - is at the centre of a storm concerning its torture scenes, specifically that it suggests illegal methods were used in the acquirement of intelligence. A number of pundits and senators, including the former presidential candidate John McCain, attacked the movie in an open letter to Sony Pictures saying it was a "grossly inaccurate and misleading" insinuation that torture led to Bin Laden's location. Refusing to be swayed and judging the movie on its cinematic merits, critics have been unanimous in their praise. Cath Clarke of Time Out magazine said, "This is an instant classic," while Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times mused, "Kathryn Bigelow proves herself once again to be a master of heightened realism and narrative drive in this retelling of the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden." Turan's use of the word "retelling" is important - Zero Dark Thirty is exactly that, the retelling of the story by a screenwriter paid to make the story interesting and fun for audiences. Bigelow could have made a documentary on the hunt for Bin Laden though we're guessing it would have been largely boring until somewhere near the end. In fact, the Oscar winning filmmaker defends the use of torture and insists it was, in fact, part of the process. In an essay to the L.A. Times, she writes, "Experts disagree sharply on the facts and particulars of the intelligence hunt, and doubtlessly that debate will continue. As for what I personally believe, which has been the subject of inquiries, accusations and speculation, I think Osama Bin Laden was found due to ingenious detective work. Torture was, however, as we all know, employed in the early years of the hunt."

In a parting blow, Bigelow added, "As a lifelong pacifist, I support all protests against the use of torture, and quite simply, inhumane treatment of any kind. But I do wonder if some of the sentiments alternately expressed about the film might be more appropriately directed at those who instituted and ordered these U.S. policies, as opposed to a motion picture that brings the story to the screen."

Zero Dark Thirty Makes Surprise Jump To The Top Of Box Office

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain

With awards season fast approaching, every little thing can make or break a film's chances of winning big. Luckily for Zero Dark Thirty, its ascension to the top of the box office may very well end up working strongly in its favour.

Kathryn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden manhunt film made a surprise appearance at the top of the film charts this week, taking in $24 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales and battling off some strong competition along the way too. The film, starring Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain as a CIA agent embroiled in the hunt for Bin Laden, beat off competition from the latest Wayans Brothers horror spoof A Haunted House, which took in $18.8 million over the weekend, as well as fellow new release Gangster Squad, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone starring modern noir, which managed to bring in just $16.7 million.

With the Golden Globe Awards happening tonight, an award or two might top off one heck of a weekend for Bigelow and her cast and crew, with the film up for four awards tonight. Bigelow, like Ben Affleck, will be looking for some love from the Globes in the director category in particular, given her Oscar snub in the division.

Can Jessica Chastain Topple Jennifer Lawrence At The Oscars?

Jessica Chastain Jennifer Lawrence Kathryn Bigelow

Jessica Chastain has enjoyed a huge couple of years in Hollywood, that's for sure. From relative unknown, the California-born actress landed roles in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, Oscar nominated The Help and the critically acclaimed Take Shelter. Since then, there's been high profile roles in Lawless and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, though her latest role in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is her biggest and best yet.

Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark ThirtyIt Was No Surprise That Jessica Chastain Scored A Nomination For Best Actress

The Osama Bin Laden movie won Chastain a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars on Thursday morning (January 10, 2013), with the bookmakers giving her a decent chance of winning, however, there's just one problem: Jennifer Lawrence. Chastain is available at around 2/1 to take home the golden statuette, though Lawrence is the massive favourite at 1/2 for her role opposite Bradley Cooper in David O'Russell's Silver Linings Playbook. The comedy-drama was one of the big success stories of the nominations, which indicates it could be Lawrence's year. Zero Dark Thirty on the other hand failed to secure a nomination for its director Kathryn Bigelow, though the controversy surrounding the movie's torture scenes could be the main reasoning behind that snub. Still, the acclaimed film rightfully holds its place among the likes of Lincoln, The Master and Silver Linings for the evening's biggest prize: Best Picture. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said, "The knockout punch of the movie season is being delivered by Zero Dark Thirty. Chastain is a marvel, and Bigelow and Boal top their Oscar-winning work in The Hurt Locker." Though the odds favor Lawrence, the smart money will be on Chastain.

Oscars 2013 Nominations For Best Lead Actress See Youngest And Oldest Ever Nominees Pit Their Wits Against Each Other

Jennifer Lawrence Naomi Watts Quvenzhane Wallis Jessica Chastain Emmanuelle Riva

The Oscar Nominations for Best Lead Actress are far harder to call than Lead Male, with a excellent selection of work between Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhane Wallis and Naomi Watts, this might be one of the toughest categories to call. If anything, it's a two-horse-race between Lawrence (who's now) and Chastain (2/1).

The category also sees and interesting first, with Wallis (9 years old) the youngest ever nominee, and Riva (85 years old) the oldest. Delivering such a strong performance at the age of 9 is truly staggering, but then so's being so active at 85, so how do you call that!?

Chastain's performance in controversial film Zero Dark Thirty sees her one of the favourites, but she'll face stiff competition from Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook. So popular has the rom-com with a psychological twist been, her co-star Bradley Cooper is nominated in the male equivalent, while David O Russell gets the nod for Director and the film for Best Picture.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln's StarDaniel Day-Lewis Is The Huge Favourite To Win The BAFTA For Best Actor

Steven Spielberg's civil war drama Lincoln leads this year's BAFTA nominations with 10 nods, including best film and best actor, for its lead star Daniel Day-Lewis. Surprisingly, director Steven Spielberg missed out on a nomination for his work behind the camera, though Sally Field scored a nomination for Best Actress. Speaking to the BBC's Lizo Mzimba at the announcement, film critic Mark Kermode said: "As far as Lincoln was concerned, all the attention was on Daniel Day-Lewis.Whatever anybody thinks about the film - and the critics have been somewhat divided, everybody thought his performance was captivating and completely believable."

Zero Dark Thirty – Kathryn Bigelow Urges Viewers To Overlook Torture Controversy

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain

Kathryn Bigelow’s new movie Zero Dark Thirty is a “complex look” at the hunt for the al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. In an interview with Reuters, the Oscar winning director reveals that the movie has been “mischaracterized” for a year, whilst she was in the process of making the movie and she and her screenwriter Mark Boal want audiences to “go and see it and judge for themselves.”

Boal and Bigelow will have faced many decisions when it came to mapping out the movie and the storyline they were going to pursue and opted against the idea of a Hollywood-style glamorized look at the capture of Bin Laden. Instead, Zero Dark Thirty explores the “previously undisclosed details of the mission to hunt down the man behind the September 11 attacks.” This, however, has led to a great deal of controversy as Bigelow and Boal have been accused of being in receipt of classified information, that had been leaked to them. The movie stars Jessica Chastain, as a CIA officer, Maya, who tracks down Bin Laden through the use of “brutal interrogations, electronic surveillance and old-fashioned spying.”

Bigelow says, of the movie that “It's ten years compressed into two plus hours… it’s really the rhythm of the hunt that creates the rhythm of the movie.” Reviews of the film so far have been largely positive, Bigelow will now be praying that audiences overlook the myth and controversy surrounding the latest product of her toil and assess the movie on its merits.

Final Zero Dark Thirty Trailer Released

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain

After the ideological flick about the manhunt for Osama bin Laden nabbed four Golden Globe nominations last Thrusday, the final trailer for Zero Dark Thirty was released yesterday.

The film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, tells the story Maya, a fictional CIA analyst, portrayed by Jessica Chastain, who leads the hunt for what could arguably be the most wanted criminal of the last decade. Originally, the film was set to premiere much earlier this year, putting it nicely ahead of the 2012 presidential race. This, of course, caused a number of vocal right-wingers to cry “Outrage!” as the reel was perceived to be just another promotional tool for Obama’s campaign. After all, what other purpose could a movie about one of the administration’s greatest successes, released right before election season, serve?

As it turned out, Zero Dark Thirty was not at all released anywhere near the election and the film itself makes no claim to support the Obama administration’s decisions during the mission. Instead, as this final trailer once again shows, the film puts the focus on moral choices, as well as the role of torture and the human rights debate in a the fight against terrorism. A heavy task to take on for sure, but with the film’s Golden Globe success and early Oscar buzz, it seems to have paid off.

Does Zero Dark Thirty Best Film Of 2012 Win Point To Future Award Success?

Kathryn Bigelow Jessica Chastain Steven Spielberg Daniel Day Lewis Bradley Cooper

Kathryn Bigelow's drama Zero Dark Thirty about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden was always going to be a big success critically. Her film The Hurt Locker in 2008 proved her film making skill, and that she was able to treat the delicate situation between American and the Middle East with tact. With this new American military story and it's political inclinations it's no surprise really that it has won the Film of the Year 2012 by the National Board of Review in the USA, reports Yahoo.

Not only did the film pick up the best film award, but Kathryn Bigelow was awarded Best Director, while Best Actress went to Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain. The award for Best Actor went to Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook. Snapping up three of the most coveted prizes in the awards is no mean feat, and is a distinct nod towards what to expect from future nominations, but not necessarily about future wins. It's rare for all three awards to give the same awards to one film. Not since the 2008/9 awards has one movie won Best Film across the board, and that was Slumdog Millionaire.

One film that was surprisingly not a big winner with the NBR was this year's Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln, starring Daniel Day Lewis, although it did appear in the list of their ten top films, which also included: Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Looper, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Promised Land and Silver Linings Playbook

Zero Dark Thirty, A Critic's Paradise, Tipped For The Oscars.

Jessica Chastain Kathryn Bigelow Chris Pratt Kyle Chandler

Kathryn Bigelow is no stranger to success. Her 2008 Iraq war movie The Hurt Locker was the recipient of a plethora of awards, including the an enormous six Oscars, and six Baftas, winning Best Picture in both awards. Once again she's bringing American military disputes into the spotlight with Zero Dark Thirty which spans the ten years that it took to find Osama Bin Laden, and the arduous process it took to do so.

It stars Jessica Chastain (The Help), Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights). Reviews so far have been enormously positive, and have largely compared it to another Middle Eastern combative movie that's also tipped to be a contender in the Oscar race- Ben Affleck's Argo. Although by comparison, most people have said that it's better. Time Magazine even said that it "blows [Argo] out of the water".

Bigelow's The Hurt Locker also got glowing reviews from critics, but was criticised by war veterans who considered it to be unrealistic to the point of absurdity, although acknowledging it to be one of the best films to date to represent the conflict in Iraq. Zero Dark Hour contrasts The Hurt Locker in sheer scale, which spans half the planet. But it's the subject matter itself plus the professionalism and dedication by the film makers which will push this film into the realms of the movie-Gods. With such poignancy in contemporary American history, it's definitely one to receive awards out of respect for the delicate topic, but the quality of the film making will undoubtedly give it a few more. Zero Dark Thirty will be released on December 19th.
