Jessica Chastain has had quite the run in the past couple of years – seven films in 2011, four in 2012 – and with her recent award run with Zero Dark Thirty, the lady can afford to do a frivolous horror once in a while.

This is exactly what she’s done with Mama. The Guillermo Del Toro flick hasn’t exactly been wow-ing the critics. However, it is currently on top of the box office charts, far ahead of testosterone-driven offerings, like The Last Stand or Gangster Squad. It may be just that people are looking for something different, or that there weren’t that many good offerings this month, but, in any case, Chastain will be laughing all the way to the bank.

The actress herself describes the flick as a “slasher movie, but more complex” in an interview with The Huffington Post. She described her set experience as fun, “a big party”, but the movie itself as “scary” – a horror/drama, typical of Del Toro’s style. So, if you’re a hardcore Chastain fan (we definitely are), or if you just want some good ol’ fashion entertainment during this cold, gloomy month, Mama might be the right title to check out.
