Plans to build a permanant memorial to the rock legend were announced in 2011, and it had been hoped that the Jimi Hendrix Park would open the following year (12).

The project was hit with numerous delays, but officials have now announced that work on the site will begin next month (April15) and the park should open by the end of the year (15).

Hendrix's sister Janie says in a statement, "The Jimi Hendrix Park is the culmination of years of hard work, collaboration, creative input, and generosity invested in something we all believed in and constructed to commemorate an amazing human being. It is our hope that for generations, it will exist as more than an attraction or point of interest, but a place of homage to one of Seattle's own. The landscaping, the artistic design, and the ambiance all mimic the vibe of the persona of Jimi, whom this park honours."

The park is slated to open in the autumn (15).
