The rock icon played the U.K. festival in 1970 and organisers plan to commemorate the legendary performance by trying to break the record for the most fans in one place wearing masks at the same time.

Special Hendrix masks will be on sale at the festival, which kicks off on Thursday (11Jun15), and all profits will go to U.K. charity WellChild. Fans will be encouraged to wear the disguises on Saturday (13Jun15) afternoon.

Isle of Wight Festival organiser John Giddings says, "Jimi's impact on the island and to popular music cannot be underestimated. His inspiration lives on today and is present each year in the artists performing this year. We wanted to celebrate the 45th anniversary by doing something fun with everyone at the festival this year. By buying a Jimi mask people can not only take part in this special celebration but also help raise money for our partner charity WellChild."

The original festival ran from 1968 to 1970, and the event was revived in 2002.
