Jimmy Finger returned to ‘The Tonight Show’ on Monday (13th July) and revealed the extent to which his hand had been injured after an accident at home.
Jimmy Fallon nearly lost his finger in an accident in his own home. The 40-year-old talk show host returned to host The Tonight Show on Monday (13th July), after taking a few weeks off to recover from his injury. His left hand was in a cast and he revealed how serious his injury was. Be prepared to cringe, it’s not a pretty story!
Jimmy Fallon nearly lost his finger after tripping up at home.
Fallon shared the news of his injury on Twitter at the end of June. Still keeping his spirits up, Fallon tweeted a picture of his hand wrapped up in a bandage and joked about the difficulties of tweeting. He also gave a brief explanation of what happened but, with his latest explanation, the situation appears to have been far worse.
"I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves, and I can't wait to burn it to the ground," Fallon explained (via CNN). "My ring got caught on the countertop when I was going down, and stuck there and pulled my finger off."
Fallon revealed how serious his injury was, further explaining how he had initially just thought it was broken. However, the doctors revealed it was a “ring avulsion” and would need surgery immediately in order to save the finger.
Ring avulsions are fairly rare occurrences but they can cause the sufferer to lose their finger. Fallon was reportedly lucky as most people have their fingers amputated.
"Apparently the odds aren't great with these things," Fallon add. "Usually they just cut your finger off."
However, he underwent six hours of surgery and fortunately the medical team were able to save his finger. It’s still going to take him a while to recover. He spent 10 days in ICU and it’s going to take another eight weeks for him to feel completely well again.
Fallon went on to thank the doctors and nurses who looked after him at the Bellevue Hospital in New York.
Get well soon, Jimmy!
