Iron Man 3 was looking like it was going to be pretty damn solid on top of the UK Box Office charts after its release recently, but it didn’t count on the tremendous success of Star Trek Into Darkness which has knocked it off its perch and claimed the number one spot with mightily impressive sales to boot.

The Benedict Cumberbatch starring Jj Abrams directed sci-fi film took in takings of a mighty £8.43 million on its debut weekend to bosh the Marvel movie down a spot in to second. However it’s not bad news at all for Iron Man 3, given that its figures of £3.18 million have pushed it towards a tidy £31 million in the UK so far. Those two films were some way ahead of the rest of the top five, which included 21 And Over (£581,000), All Stars (£498,000) and The Croods (£384,000). Not troubling the top five but still performing impressively was the 3D animation Wreck-It Ralph, which took another £49,000 to push it to £23.5 million in UK box office sales, 13 weeks after it first entered the charts.

Not making the top five either was the new Matthew McConaughey starring MUD on its debut weekend. However, its taking of £237,000 should still be considered impressive given it was shown in just 71 locations. There’s no denying who the real winner was though.
