Who is Maisie Richardson Sellers, the actress at the center of the latest Star Wars Episode VII casting rumour
The casting of Star Wars Episode VII, is creating a whirlwind of rumours with many names been thrown out as potential stars. Lupita Nyong’o and Adam Driver have both had their names attached to the much anticipated movie, but now it seems the latest name we need to get to know is of Oxford Graduate Maisie Richardson-Sellers.
Jj Abrams is the creative force behind Star Wars Episode VII
The Hollywood Reporter has cast the attention firmly on the unknown Maisie Richardson Sellers, as they revealed that several sources have told them the newcomer is ‘'in line to nab an undisclosed and possibly major role in the high-profile Disney/Lucasfilm production'’. Producers are currently in the middle of an extensive casting search in London as they try and find actors to fill their main roles. Anyone who does get the call however, is said to be sworn to secrecy, along with their agent.
Little is known about Maisie Richardson Sellers, who has no previous movie credits. What we do known is Maisie is a graduate of the prestigious Oxford University, where she studied Archaeology and Anthropology at Hertford College. During her time there she was a member of the university’s famed dramatic society where she sat on its committee between 2012 and 2013 as ‘the freshers and social rep’.
The OUDS has in the past given us many talented actors and counts Hugh Grant and Kate Beckinsale among its allumni. During her time at Oxford, Maisie directed a production of Chatroom in 2010 and her acting credits include roles in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, Mephisto, which took her to the Edinburgh fringe festival, and Tenuous Links. Last year she appeared in a production of They Will Be Red where her performance was describe as ‘'precise and careful in the eventual release of her character’s emotional turmoil', and that she ‘'creates a protagonist that is patterned with a residue of understanding and misunderstanding.’' Alongisde her stage credits, Maisie has also acted in short films including When a Pancake Sings in December 2011 and Music Wherever She Goes in April 2012. She also co-founded the Footprint Theatre company which works on creating innovative pieces of site specific theatre performed around London.
Details on Star Wars Episode VII are being kept under wraps
There’s no specifics on which character Maisie may have been offered the role of, but The Hollywood reporter points to the character of a “young black or mixed-race woman who may be a descendent of Jedi Knight Ben Kenobi,” as her potential role. The character is said to be one who will “cross paths with the children of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia”, in the upcoming film, which is set 30 years after the events of 1983's Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Of course all we can do now is speculate until an official announcement is made from the Star Wars camp. But really wouldn’t it be fantastic if an unknown British actor leapt to fame through a role in one of the most iconic movie franchises of all time? We certainly think so and even if it all just turns out to be rumours all this attention certainly can only help the career of the aspiring actress.
