The buzz over J.K. Rowling’s latest Harry Potter offering is showing no signs of dying down. The 1,500 word story, published on the author’s Pottermore site, was a simple news style piece written in the voice of journalist Rita Skeeter. But it gave us the first update, since the Deathly Hallows epilogue as to what Harry and his friends have been up to. It’s all left us wondering, are there more Harry Potter offerings to come, or is J.K. Rowling really just teasing us?

JK RowlingJ.K. Rowling offered fans an update on Harry and the gang on her Pottermore site

If J.K. Rowling just wanted to assure us that Harry, Ron, Hermione and even Neville had all grown up okay she could have easily done that. She could have written a kind of ‘nothing to see here’ style piece, which reassured us and satisfied our appetite for all things Potter, without leaving too many doors opened. But instead, the Daily Prophet article that Rowling posted only left us asking even more questions and threw up endless new possibilities for the members of Dumbledore’s army.

As Skeeter, Rowling described Harry’s 34 year old appearance pointing out his greying hair and mentioning that he was still wearing his trademark glasses. That could of been enough, but Skeeter didn't leave it there. Instead she pointed out that he had a new scar to go along with his famous forehead one. "Is the Chosen One embroiled in fresh mysteries that will one day explode upon us all, plunging us into a new age of terror and mayhem?" she asks, unable to give an answer. Well now you said it, we’re left wondering the same thing.

There’s also the Harry/Hermione romance question. J.K. has said in the past that she regrets having Hermione end up with Ron and not Harry. But in Skeeter’s article she alludes to rumours about a romance between a teenaged Hermione and Harry. Calling her the ‘femme fatal’ of the group, she writes that, “press reports of the time revealed that as a teenager she toyed with the young Potter's affections before being seduced away by Viktor Krum, finally settling for Potter's faithful sidekick.” Why stir the pot on this one now, could it be that Rowling eventually intends to right her wrongs regarding Harry and Hermione?

But we're not left just wondering about the famous three. Rowling also let's us know about other characters, giving us little tidbits such as Charlie Weasley still being unmarried, Neville Longbottom and his wife maybe having a drink problem, Harry’s godson Teddy being a bit of a wild child. Suddenly a whole realm of possibilities are opened up. We’re now left wondering about poor Neville and his wife Hannah, we hadn’t given them a second thought in years.

The real genius of the whole thing is, that Rowling chose to write as Rita Skeeter, meaning this whole ‘short story’ can be easily dismissed. She’s writing in a tabloid/gossip column style which means she can get away with saying anything, without it having to have any real bearing on the actual story. We’re meant to read the Daily Prophet article and be filled with questions, but Rowling isn’t under any obligations to provide the answers.

Then there was the end, where Rita plugs her new book, Dumbledore's Army: The Dark Side of the Demob, which is said to be released on July 31. So of course we’re now all going to be sitting waiting on July 31st to see if Rowling will give us another Harry Potter story. What little crumbs might the mighty Rowling throw at the hungry Potter army? The most safest guess is to say none. Sure one day we might get more Potter stories, they’re probably all already stored in Rowling’s inner library. But it’s unlikely she’ll unload them all in such quick succession. Sadly, rather than being a sign of great things to come, the latest Pottermore offering is probably no more than just a tease, albeit a very tantalising one indeed.
