Joan As Policewoman The Ride Single

Having paid her dues as session player for the likes of Lou Reed, Elton John and Scissor Sisters, Joan Wasser has finally ventured out on her own, and on the evidence of this single, she should have gone solo long ago. The Ride is a quietly moving piece of classic pop, with sparse instrumentation acting as the perfect backdrop for Wasser's Nina Simone-esque vocals.

The vocals are undoubtedly the main attraction here, occasionally spine-tingling, always compelling, however, on the B-sides, we hear the versatility and competence of Joan and her band. The sassy soul of I Defy, featuring Antony of "and the Johnsons" fame is a strong antidote to the tranquility of the A-side, and Eternal Flame impresses with its sweet soul
credentials being undermined by cold rhythms and ominous noises to a stunning effect.
