Inherent Vice - Extended Trailer

Larry "Doc" Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) is a simple man. When he's not abusing illicit substances, he's solving crimes as a private investigator - although those two do sometimes overlap. But as the 1960s breath their dying breath, Doc's life is going to get perhaps a little too interesting for his liking. Joanna Newsom Observed Joaquin Phoenix's 'Magical' Acting Style In 'Inherent Vice'

Joanna Newsom makes her feature film acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson's crime comedy 'Inherent Vice' and it seems there was no-one she could've better learned from than co-star Joaquin Phoenix.

The 32-year-old multi-instrumentalist best known for her accomplishments in harp-playing is almost totally new to the world of acting. Aside from lending her voice to the English dubbing of Japanese animation 'The Sky Crawlers', making an appearance as a harpist (naturally) in an episode of 'Portlandia' and starring in MGMT's video for their single 'Kids', she has only ever found a creative outlet in music. That was until she landed the role of narrator Sortilege in Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel 'Inherent Vice'.

'Inherent Vice' may be an absurd comedy with a rather complicated premise, but it could prove to have one of Owen Wilson's more serious roles, as he takes on a Coy Harlingen; a government informer with some big trust issues.

Joaquin Phoenix is Doc Sportello in the Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel; a private investigator forced to get involved in a case he'd rather walk away from when his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and his wife and her lover get embroiled in a kidnapping scheme. Sound complicated? That's why he needs Coy. 'I'm the guy who's helping Doc to understand what's going on', Wilson explains. 'Except I'm not able to ever really shed too much light on it so all our scenes have this mysterious quality to it, fringed with paranoia'.

The temptation to predict Oscar winners in April is one that should be avoided, but equally one that is difficult to resist. One look at the Counsellor got people handing out statuettes in Spring last year, but we’ve got a feeling the same mistake won’t be made for ‘The Immigrant’.

True Detective Season 2: Which Pairing Can Pick Up From Cohle And Hart?

Matthew Mcconaughey Woody Harrelson HBO Tom Hanks Paul Dano Christian Bale Giancarlo Esposito Lupita Nyong'o Sebastian Arcelus Bryan Cranston Jon Hamm Casey Affleck Joaquin Phoenix

Nic Pizzolatto put the sincerity and quality of True Detective’s story over multiple seasons of the show, asserting that a strict 8-episode format would be condusive to a strong third act. And judging by the critical claim he’s received – his creation is being talked about in the same breath as The Wire – one is inclined to trust the man who risked everything to write the new HBO anthology series.

True DetectiveWoody Harrelson [L] and Matthew McConuaghey [R] as Hart and Cohle in 'True Detective'

“One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story,” explained Pizzolatto.

Her Review

Extraordinary

With only a hint of a futuristic setting, Spike Jonze takes a remarkably honest look at human emotions as a man and his computer's intelligent operating system fall madly in love with each other. Utterly grounded in believable characters and situations, this is a boldly inventive exploration of how we connect with each other. It's also one of the most involving, witty and evocative movies of the year.

It's set just a few years into the future, when we've essentially done away with keyboards and talk to our phones and computers. So Theodore (Phoenix) works in a company that writes letters for people who want a more tactile way of communicating. While trying not to let his recent divorce from Caroline (Mara) influence his work, his friends (Adams and Letscher) set him up on a blind date with a sexy woman (Wilde). But he's not quite ready to move on until he begins opening up to his new interactive operative system, which calls herself Samantha (voiced by Johansson). And she has such an open-hearted personality that Theodore can't help but fall for her.

The film has a breezy, fable-like tone that allows heavy themes to emerge without weighing us down. Indeed, the central idea is that relationships are difficult because we can't help but evolve individually, which sometimes means drifting apart. Obviously, this has huge ramifications when your partner is a limitless computer mind that will never stop expanding. But Theodore doesn't want to think about this; he is frightened by the idea that Samantha is changing. Yes, despite the vaguely surreal premise, the film is packed with things we readily identify with.
