Fans of Paul Thomas Anderson were positively foaming at the mouth upon hearing news that the legendary director was to adapt Thomas Pynchon's novel Inherent Vice. Further good news was to follow when Joaquin Phoenix - Oscar nominated star of The Master - had signed onto play private eye Doc Sportello.

In the months that followed, arguably the best cast of the year was assembled, with Benecio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Josh Brolin taking supporting roles. Early reaction was lukewarm but now, on the eve of its full U.S release, the heavyweight critics are beginning to wade in.

There are some movies that can be watched over and over again, without you getting bored. Sometimes, this is due to the intense and intricate work of directors, who hide all sorts of small things in the background, and with up upcoming release of 'Inherent Vice', actor Benicio Del Toro revealed that this film may just be one of those.

"I feel that every time I see it, I see new things. And those movies I really respect - because they last", explained Del Toro, before adding "I think that this one is one of those." 'Inherent Vice' is the latest film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson, and follows the exploits of a Los Angeles detective (played by Joaquin Phoenix) during the 1970s.

Joanna Newsom makes her feature film acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson's crime comedy 'Inherent Vice' and it seems there was no-one she could've better learned from than co-star Joaquin Phoenix.

The 32-year-old multi-instrumentalist best known for her accomplishments in harp-playing is almost totally new to the world of acting. Aside from lending her voice to the English dubbing of Japanese animation 'The Sky Crawlers', making an appearance as a harpist (naturally) in an episode of 'Portlandia' and starring in MGMT's video for their single 'Kids', she has only ever found a creative outlet in music. That was until she landed the role of narrator Sortilege in Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel 'Inherent Vice'.

Joaquin Phoenix is Doc Sportello in the Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel; a private investigator forced to get involved in a case he'd rather walk away from when his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and his wife and her lover get embroiled in a kidnapping scheme. Sound complicated? That's why he needs Coy. 'I'm the guy who's helping Doc to understand what's going on', Wilson explains. 'Except I'm not able to ever really shed too much light on it so all our scenes have this mysterious quality to it, fringed with paranoia'.

Doctor Strange, Marvel's next big project which is likely to star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, will shoot at Pinewood Studios with a release date set for May 2016. The movie is the latest big-budget project to choose the UK facility as its base, following Star Wars: Episode VII, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The First Avenger. Bond 24 is likely to shoot there too.

And in random mid week news, a man has been arrested after allegedly causing trouble on the set of Woody Allen’s new movie. Allen is currently filming on location near Brown University in Providence, for an as-of-yet untitled project to be released in 2015.

The untitled movie is due out sometime in 2015. Filming will continue as scheduled.

Officers of the local police department were called on the scene on Tuesday, August 5, after the suspect hurled a chair at security guards and ran off. He had previously arrived on the set and started asking “weird questions”about the movie's stars, who include Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix and Parker Posey. The incident raises concerns about the security of the actors and everyone involved in the project, however the project will continue as scheduled.

Joaquin Phoenix, the Oscar nominee often tipped as one of the world's greatest actors following stellar turns in Gladiator, The Master, and Her, is in talks to star in Doctor Strange. Until now, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto were mostly strongly linked to the role though, according to Deadline, Marvel only has eyes for Phoenix.

Variety reports that Joaquin Phoenix, star of Her and Walk the Line, is in early talks to take on the mantel of Marvel's latest superhero to undergo the movie treatment. The role was previously linked to British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy. 

Could Joaquin be the new superhero on the block?

For those unfamiliar with the comics, Doctor Strange is the monicker of Stephen Strange, an egotistical former neurosurgeon turned protector of Earth thanks to his magical abilities. The character was mentioned very briefly in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, sending fans into an internet frenzy and confirming that the character was very much alive in the Marvel cinematic universe.

“One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story,” explained Pizzolatto.
