In his last show before the high-stakes presidential election, comedian John Oliver accepted the blame for Donald Trump’s controversial candidacy by digging up some old archive footage of himself saying that the whole idea was laughable.

Those with sharp memories may recall that British comedian Oliver guest-hosted ‘The Daily Show’ in 2013. In it, he egged on Trump to run, saying that he’d write him a “campaign check” in order to run for the purposes of a joke. Oh how prophetic he proved to be.

“It is frankly hard to believe there ever was a time when people thought a Trump candidacy would be funny, but there was such a time,” Oliver said, defending his sketch. “As you may remember, three years ago I guest-hosted ‘The Daily Show’, and, there is something you should see.”

The audience of his 2016 show, ‘Last Week Tonight’, bemoaned the clip in exasperation. “Do it! Do it! Look at me! Do it!” he says in the clip. “I will personally write you a campaign check now, on behalf of this country, which does not want you to be president but which badly wants you to run.”

“I want to believe America will reject Donald Trump, that our innate sense of decency will kick in, like some sort of moral autopilot,” 39 year old Oliver said, signing off. “But I have been spectacularly wrong before.”

He then remembered that he once told Jon Stewart that the Chicago Cubs would never win the World Series – which they promptly did last week, breaking 108 year old curse.

“I’m an idiot. But that clearly shows, no outcome is certain,” Oliver reflected. “So if you are thinking you don’t have to show up on Tuesday because there is no way the impossible could happen, take it from somebody who has learned from painful experience: You are wrong about that.”

The 2016 presidential election, between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, takes place on Tuesday (November 8th).
