John Oliver delivered a scathing takedown of the on-going turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri, reminding authorities, "Police are not soldiers". On August 9, unarmed teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed.

On the final Last Week Tonight of August, Oliver delved into the biggest national news story of the summer.

"This whole story is depressingly familiar," Oliver began. "And there are so many unanswered questions regarding why an officer would shoot an unarmed teenager. What is absolutely clear is that the police have handled everything since then terribly."

From there, Oliver continued to criticize officials at every level in Missouri - from the police chief to the governor. The comedian made it clear that "not all cops are bad" but drove home the problem of militarized police in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

"The police are not soldiers. So why in this photo from Ferguson are they wearing fucking camo? They are northwest of St. Louis, not northwest of the Amazon," he said, adding, "If you are a cop in the United States, you should dress for the job you have, not the job you want."

"Here's the thing the [Ferguson] mayor doesn't understand: As a general rule, no one should ever be allowed to say, 'There's no history of racial tension here,' because that sentence has never been true anywhere on earth," he continued,

Interestingly, Oliver also pointed out that this isn't the first time St. Louis law enforcement have been criticized for targeting black citizens. Last year, the St. Louis County Fire Lieutenant was given his marching orders for saying, "Let's make the jail cells more colorful."
