John Stamos has checked himself into rehab.

The 51-year-old star signed up to be treated for substance abuse on a residential programme, People magazine has confirmed.

The 'Full House' actor was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Beverly Hills last month but had to be rushed to hospital with a possible medical condition.

Following the incident, Stamos took to his Twitter account to thank his fans for their support.

He wrote: ''Thanks to everyone for their love & support. I'm home & well. (sic)''

The 'ER' star also showed his appreciation to the hospital staff who looked after him, adding: ''Very appreciative of the BHPD & Cedars for their care. (sic)''

Stamos was arrested after police officers were alerted to the fact he'd been drinking when he started driving erratically along Santa Monica Boulevard.

He was handcuffed before being taken to hospital for treatment and is set to appear before a judge for the DUI charge on September 11.

A statement released by the Beverly Hills Police Department said: ''Due to a possible medical condition, Mr. Stamos was transported to a local area hospital by the Beverly Hills Fire Department for observation. Subsequent investigation determined that he was driving under the influence and was placed under arrest.''
