'Noah' And Five Other Movies That Sparked Religious Controversy

Russell Crowe Mel Gibson John Travolta

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah might have faced some religious controversy during its initial opening, but its ridden that wave right to the top of the US box office, becoming a certified sucess already. As Aronofsky surely knew, any movie featuring a religious theme or borrowing from the bible is almost certain to find itself in some kind of hot water, whether it causes protests or even ends up getting an outright ban. For some movies the ensuing publicity translates into box office sales, for others, a bit of controversy doesn't end up creating cash. Here are five other films with religious leanings that faced controversy long before Noah stormed the box office.

John Travolta's 'Adele Dazeem' Oscar Faux Pas Leads To 'Travoltify Your Name' Tool

John Travolta Ellen Degeneres Idina Menzel

There’s a fine line between the ignominy of Internet mockery and online hysteria. Jennifer Lawrence, for instance, enjoys the latter, while John Travolta calling Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem" at the Oscars on Sunday night really secures you a place in the former camp.

John Travolta
There's something ridiculous about John Travolta - we just can't work out what it is

Tom Cruise And John Travolta Attend Scientology Super-Cathedral Opening In Clearwater

Tom Cruise John Travolta Kelly Preston

Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kelly Preston were three of around 6000 people in attendance to usher in a new era for Scientology, represented by the religion’s new ‘Flag Building’ in Clearwater, Florida. As the tallest building in the region, it will home to the new ‘Super Power’ program.

Perhaps the three most famous members of the cult religion watched as David Miscavige gave a speech, introducing the terrifying, 377,000-square-foot Flag Building to his dedicated followers. This is the first time members have a place to practice the 'Super Power' program, which was developed by founder L Ron Hubbard in the 1970s.

This wasn’t just a walk-in-affair; the scientologists knew that if it were a free-for-all, people would just stroll up, make fun of them and probably throw things, so security was tight. But instead of the 10,000 people predicted, around 6000 people turned up. Despite this, dedicated followers still weren’t allowed in.

A Film Award For George Clooney As Stacy Keibler Is Added To His List Of Exes

It has been announced that BAFTA winning actor George Clooney will scoop another award in L.A this year - the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film - after his work as a producer on the Ben Affleck-directed Argo. This news coincides with the strong rumours that Clooney and his girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, have split up. According to the The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles, as reported by Yahoo! News, the coveted award is presented to a "unique individual, upon whose work is stamped the indelible mark of authorship and commitment, and who has lifted the craft to new heights." Gary Dartnall, the BAFTA Los Angeles chairman spoke highly of the 53 year-old actor and his successful career: "George Clooney is without question one of our industry's true icons. His work has captivated audiences from all corners of the globe, and BAFTA Los Angeles is proud to be celebrating his immeasurable contributions to our craft."

George Clooney And Stacy Keibler Have Reportedly Split Up.

Stacy Keibler now joins the long list of George Clooney's ex-girlfriends and, compared to Clooney's average, their relationship was relatively long-term. The silver-haired actor's previous partners have included reality TV star Sarah Larson (less than one year), Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis (two years), John Travolta's now-wife Kelly Preston (one year) and Bridget Jones actress Renee Zellweger (less than two years). According to People magazine's source, it was the 33 year-old former WWE wrestler Keibler who broke off their romance: "Stacy called it quits. She wants to have children and a family someday. She knows where George stands on that. They talked and they quietly stopped being a couple several weeks ago." It has also been speculated that the busy couple's current distance - Clooney's in Europe filming WWII film The Monuments Men, Keibler's working on her Supermarket Superstar show in L.A - could have driven them apart having not seen each other since her March visit to Berlin.

Pulp Fiction Car Recovered Two Decades After Theft

Quentin Tarantino John Travolta

Twenty years after the cherry red Chevy convertible was stolen, Quentin Tarantino had his Pulp fiction car recovered. Police think they have found the iconic cherry red Malibu. Director Quentin Tarantino’s whip was recovered in the San Francisco Bay area earlier this week, the San Bernardino County Sun reports. According to Sherrif Sgt. Albert Anolin’s account, an investigation into an old Chevelle Malibu in the city of Victorville on April 18 led investigators to the particular Malibu in the Oakland area. The investigators then confirmed that the vehicle had belonged to the director and was reported stolen back in 1994.

Unsurprisingly, the investigators concluded that the car had been resold. The current owner of the Malibu had nothing to do with the theft and had just been the victim of a fraud. Plus, the statute of limitations on auto theft has expired ages ago. In layman’s terms, even if he had stolen the car, there’s nothing the cops could do about it. Even so, it’s good news for the director.

According to a report by TMZ, the police have been trying to get in touch with Tarantino (can you imagine how that conversation would go), but they haven’t been able to get through. It’s looking increasingly likely that the director will learn about his Chevy’s recovery the same way as everyone else – from the news. But hey, in a city where gossip can destroy a career, your classic car being found after two decades is definitely one of the better pieces of news to wake up to.

Fancy Buying Princess Diana's 'John Travolta' Evening Gown?

Diana Princess Of Wales John Travolta

The evening gown that Princess Diana of Wales wore while she danced with John Travolta at the White House is expected to fetch between £200,000-£300,000 when it goes up for auction in London today. The dress, as well as nine other evening gowns worn by the late Princess, will be sold at Kerry Taylor Auctions.

The gowns are expected to fetch up to £830,000 in total, the most expensive of which is the Victor Edelstein designed midnight blue velvet evening gown worn by Diana during a White House dinner hosted by President Ronald Reagan in 1985. It's also considered the most famous of the batch, after Diana wore it during her dance with Saturday Night Fever actor John Travolta during a dance across the White House floor. Travolta glided across the dance-floor and twirled the Princess around, much to the delight of the photographers covering the event. Though not a state visit, it was one of the most memorable trips that Diana and Prince Charles made to the U.S., with some 4,000 Americans turning out to watch the Royal couple's plane land in Washington.

The collection of dresses were last seen together at auction in New York in 1996, just two months before Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.

John Travolta And Olivia Newton-John Video Ridiculed

John Travolta Olivia Newton-John

What was obviously meant to be a sweet reunion and a great source of nostalgia for their fan base, seems to have back fired a little for John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as their release of a Christmas album has been with widespread dismay and mockery, in spite of the pair’s best intentions (the proceeds taken from sales of the LP are going to charity after all.)

However, the actors – who shot to critical acclaim together with their co-starring performances in the hit musical Grease – have had another set back with a new Grease-themed video that was released this week meeting ridicule on Twitter. The video is for the single ‘I Think You Might Like It’, and was written for the pair by the same man who wrote their smash ‘You’re the One That I Want’, John Farrar. In it, the pair recreate scenes from the famous musical; however, with said musical being released well over 30 years ago some of the lustre has admittedly been lost.

Writing on Twitter, Guardian columnist Sali Hughes said: "This has blown my mind. Oddest video ever." US radio host Kelly Collis meanwhile wrote, "This is the most awkward Christmas Song with Olivia Newton and John Travolta." Meanwhile, New York Magazine’s entertainment section have felt moved enough by the whole thing to publish a list called ‘Ten Things That Creep Us Out About John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's New 'Music Video’.

"This Is Incredibly Boring" - Ellen DeGeneres' Hilarious Diss To John Travolta

John Travolta Ellen Degeneres Olivia Newton-John

Ellen Degeneres has never been one to suffer fools gladly. When her recent chat show guest John Travolta tried to talk her through his hot chocolate obsession, guiding her through the various types of cocoa bean the world has to offer, she promptly cut him off, saying “I’m gonna interrupt just one second because this is incredibly boring.” Luckily, the Grease star was in on the joke and cracked a smile, as Ellen dissed his bizarre obsession.

In fact, Travolta was really on the show to promote the charity Christmas album that he is releasing with Olivia Newton-John. The album features guests such as James Taylor, Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand. Oh… and Kenny G. “All the proceeds go to our charities. And they knew that so, once we told them that it was more impetus to help us,” Travolta explained. The moneys raised from the album’s sales will help the Jett Travolta Foundation, which the actor set up after the death of his son Jett. They will also help fund Olivia Newton John’s Cancer and Wellness Foundation.

The Jett Travolta Foundation aims to help people with autism and who suffer seizures, as they are “the least known areas of illnesses… and I feel bad that there’s so many people dealing with this and there are no answers for it.” However, he’s expanded the aims of the organization to include handicapped and underprivileged children.

John Travolta And Olivia Newton-John In Reunion Video For Christmas Single

John Travolta Olivia Newton-John

John Travolta and his Grease co-star Olivia Newton Jon have teamed up on a Christmas charity single and have created a video for it. The single itself has been billed as a 'sequel' to the Grease song "You're the One That I Want" and has even been written by the same guy that wrote the original.

To accompany the single, the pair made a video and there's very little positive that can be said it. While the single is pretty bad, the video is terrible. To describe it as anything other than bizarre and bland would be futile, so check out the video below to judge for yourself.

"I wanted people to be able to play it around the house or in the car during the holiday, and make us part of your celebration," Travolta said in a statement, quoted by New York Daily New. "Gathering around the house listening to Christmas music has always been an important part of that time of year to my family."

Kelly Preston Believes Childhood Disease Caused Son Jett's Autism

Kelly Preston John Travolta

Kelly Preston discussed the circumstances surrounding her autistic 16-year-old son Jett Travolta's death in 2009 on medical chat show 'The Doctors'.

The 'What a Girl Wants' actress and her Oscar nominated husband John Travolta have always maintained that their youngest son suffered with mental health problems which caused him to have a seizure and subsequently suffer a serious head injury after hitting his head on the bathtub during a family holiday to The Bahamas. When explaining the incident, Kelly said: 'He was autistic. He had seizures, and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki syndrome.' Kawasaki Syndrome is rare autoimmune disease with an unknown cause which causes blood vessels to become inflamed and can often be fatal, and Kelly believes that it was one of the factors that contributed to Jett developing autism. Other causes she described were complications in labour, taking antibiotics while breast feeding which led to her son developing thrush and chemicals and pesticides in food and cleaning products.

The actress also claimed that medication taken to stabilise Jett's autism never worked but a healthy lifestyle looked to be a likely cure. 'We would try all different things, and I felt when we were able to keep certain things at a bare minimum and do as healthy as possible, he did so much better', she said. 'He was coming out of the autism.'

Kelly Preston: The Chemicals In Our Food Could Cause Autism

Kelly Preston John Travolta

Kelly Preston has broken her silence on the medical conditions that led to the death of her 16-year-old son's death in January 2009. Jett Travolta died during a family vacation on Grand Bahama Island, though he has long suffered from numerous illnesses.

Speaking on CBS daytime televisions series The Doctors, Preston, 50, explained, "(He) was autistic. He had seizures, and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki syndrome." Perhaps more interestingly, Preston said that she and husband John Travolta had a theory on why humans become autistic, "I strongly believe as a mother, as does my husband, that there are certain contributing factors that lead to autism. And some of it is very much the chemicals in our environment and in our food," she said. John Travolta first publically acknowledged his late son's autism in September 2009, explaining that Jett's seizures would strike every 5 to 10 days and that his son would usually sleep for 12 hours after each minute-long attack. Jett's autism was revealed during the criminal trial of a paramedic and former Bahamas politician accused of trying to extort Travolta for money. The alleged blackmail was connected to a medical liability release document with the Hollywood actor's signature on it. The Pulp Fiction star said the man threatened to sell damaging stories to news outlets and suggested he refused life-saving treatment unless the actor coughed up millions, reported the New York Daily News.

Problems with the jury led to a mistrial, though Travolta eventually dropped the accusations saying he didn't want to endure another trial.

How Many People Does Kirstie Alley Love? Add John Travolta To The List!

Kirstie Alley Patrick Swayze John Travolta

Kirstie Alley has spent the week telling everyone who'll listen how many actors best known for dancing movies she's been in love with. She started with Patrick Swayze - the late Dirty Dancing star - and has moved on to John Travolta, the Saturday Night Fever and Grease Hollywood icon.

Alley made it clear that she never had an affair with Swayze, explaining that she didn't want to break up his marriage at the time. However, it seems Travolta has a particularly special place in her heart. She tells Barbara Walters in an upcoming 20/20 interview, "Travolta is [the] love of my life because of our evolution. From the actor I wanted to run off with to being J & Kelly's children's' Godmother." Bit weird, but anyway. In the same interview Alley put to bed rumors surrounding Travolta's sexuality, saying, "I know John with all my heart and soul. He's not gay. I think in some weird way, in Hollywood, if someone gets big enough and famous enough and they're not out doing drugs and they're not womanizing, what do you say about them? I think that people think that's the supreme insult, 'He's gay'".

So there you have it, Kirstie Alley wanted to run off with both Patrick Swayze and John Travolta. She ended up choosing not to have an affair with the former, and became godmother to the latter's grandchildren.
