A book written in 1947 by folk singer Woody Guthrie, famed for 'This Land is Your Land', is to be published thanks to Johnny Depp and Douglas Brinkley.
Anyone who is a fan of Woody Guthrie will know that his recording and distribution of songs is somewhat all over the place. Aside from his seminal folk album 'Dust Bowl Ballads' much of the rest of his discography and recording history can be found across a range of albums many of which are compilations, and the vast majority didn't even see the light of day until long after his tragically early death of Huntington's disease in 1967. However, with dedicated friends Johnny Depp and Douglas Brinkley, some of Guthrie's written work is once again seeing the wide world, in a slightly more structured publication: a booked titled House of Earth.
The 1920s' Dust Bowl is the setting of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, a drought of both water and money that tore through the American west, which Guthrie experienced first hand. It informed not only his iconic album, but also House of Earth which is about "a farm couple struggling through the Dust Bowl", reports USA Today.
House of Earth is the first book to be published by the Harper Collins subsidiary run by Johnny Depp named Infinitum Nihil, and is also the name of his film production company. Writing to the website, he described the book as "a lost treasure of 20th-century American literature." Of course, Depp is best known for movies, so it isn't a far cry to think that it may be adapted. Nothing is in the pipeline yet, "But should the possibility of a film be discussed," Depp adds, "it would be an honor to play any part in it."
Included in the book will be a 35 page introduction co-written by both Depp and Brinkley.
