The new trailer for next year's Mortdecai appears promising, although it seems far more focused on character than plot. The plot, such as it is, takes inspiration from the Mortdecai series of books by author Kyril Bonfiglioli.
Johnny Depp as Charlie Mortdecai
More specifically, the film is set to take cues from the novel 'Don't Point That Thing at Me', and follows a rich English art dealer as he traverses the globe in search of a paining containing the code to a bank fully of secret Nazi gold. Although the trailer keeps most of the storyline under wraps.

Perhaps director David Koepp should be worried about the success of his upcoming film, as a strong trend seems to be following Johnny Depp's films at the moment - critical failure. Whether Depp is cursed when it comes to big-budget Hollywood films is yet to be confirmed, but according to Rotten Tomatoes, since 2010, only 4 out of the 12 films Depp has starred in have scored more than 51%. And out of those 4, people have only heard of Rango.

Depp is probably best known at the moment for the recent film Transcendence - a film which barely made a back it's production costs of 100 million USD at the box office earlier this year. That's not to say that the same is going to be the case of Mortdecai, considering how director David Koepp was the writer for 'Jurassic Park', 'Mission: Impossible' and Sam Raimi's 'Spiderman'. His most recent film, Premium Rush, received favourable reviews.
Johnny Depp and co-star Paul Bettany in Mortdecai
Charlie Mortdecai is brash, rich, aristocratic English art dealer, accompanied by his comically named man-servant Jock Strapp. The two characters are loosely based on Wooster and Jeeves from P. G. Wodehouse - a relation that was acknowledged by the writer as Mortdecai frequently references Wodehouse in the stories. Perhaps this eccentric character is perfect for Johnny Depp, as it allows for his characteristic erratic style of acting. Who knows - perhaps Charles Mortdecai will become the next Captain Jack Sparrow?
Mortdecai is set for a January 2015 release and will also star Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum & Ewan McGregor.
