Rocking a huge beard at the 65th Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, 22 September, Mad Men star Jon Hamm was one of the toasts of the red carpet, however it was at the same event where it may have emerged that the actor will be undergoing throat surgery next week. According to Life & Style magazine, the bearded actor has developed a large polyp on his vocal cord and has been coughing up blood as a result. He will look to have it removed in surgery next week.

"January Jones was talking about it at the Governors Ball afterparty last night," an insider told Life & Style. According to further reports relayed by the magazine, the 42-year-old actor had been suffering in silence with the growth - which is an abnormal growth of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane that is prone to affecting people who regularly use their voice - but when he began coughing up blood he decided that enough was enough and it was time to get it sorted out.

"They were less interested in the ball and more excited about their fantasy league," the source continued, revealing that one of the main topics of conversation between the two stars was a fantasy football league. "January was asking, 'Who's going on Monday night?'"

In addition to the news of his throat problems, there was more bad news for the Mad Men star as his hit drama series went home from the event empty handed, despite receiving 12 nominations. Among the nominations, Hamm was up for the 'Lead Actor In A Drama Series' gong, but lost out to The Newsroom star Jeff Daniels.
