Robert Downey Jr. Reveals 'The Avengers' Was More Successful Than The Cast Thought

Robert Downey Jr Joss Whedon The Avengers

With 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' set for release in parts of the world this week, Robert Downey Jr. took some time to talk about his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man - the character who started the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008. But, as it turns out, when the cast got together in 2012 to film the first 'Avengers' movie, none of them really knew just how big it would turn out to be.

"I don't think any of us really expected how huge the first one would be, so it can almost intimidate you a bit because you're like, 'Oh, well we were just kinda hoping it would work out', and now there's this expectation to deliver". Presumably they weren't expecting the film to become the third highest grossing movie of all time (behind 'Avatar' and 'Titanic') with 1,518,594,910 USD worldwide in 2012.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron Review

Good

Marvel fans will love the action mayhem in this Avengers sequel, but everyone else will vividly feel the fatigue that has descended over this franchise. After the bright spark of originality in last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, we're back to the same tired formula involving terrific actors battling for screen time in between gratuitous, brutal action sequences that are so digitally animated that they're technically cartoons.

The film opens in the middle of the action as Captain America (Chris Evans) leads Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner) to recapture an Asgardian sceptre. Tony then discovers that the sceptre could be useful for Ultron, his artificial intelligence project to create a global peacekeeping force. But this goes badly wrong as Ultron (James Spader) springs to life and decides instead to obliterate humanity to make space for his population of smart machines. So the team races from America to Africa, Korea and Eastern Europe, facing off against Ultron and his super-powered twin cohorts Pietro and Wanda (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), who of course defect to the Avengers. They also get help from a human-computer entity called The Vision (Paul Bettany).

Yes, there are a lot of characters in this film, and writer-director Joss Whedon is exceptionally good at giving each of them something to do, both dramatically and in the thick of the action. These brief moments of humour and emotional depth are what make the movie enjoyable, giving the solid actors some meaty material to play with.

When embarking on a franchise like 'The Avengers', it must help to get on well with your other cast members. In a recent interview with Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America), the two actors displayed a hilarious friendship with one anther - giving a tiny glimpse into what it must be like on set with these guys.

"Lovers, kindred souls, kindred spirits", said Hemsworth, while discussing the relationship between Thor and Captain America. Evans jumped in by revealing: "We wear necklaces with a little broken heart, and when we put them together." But when they tried to draw a comparison between themselves and another movie, they found themselves with different opinions.

Russo Brothers Confirmed To Direct 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Joe Russo Anthony Russo Joss Whedon

Joe and Anthony Russo, the sibling directorial team who helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, have been confirmed to direct both parts of Disney-Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War.  The news has been the worst kept secret in Hollywood and the Russo's have been known to be in talks for months.

AvengersAvengers: Age of Ultron will be Joss Whedon's final movie in the Avengers franchise

The Russo's will take over from Joss Whedon, who directed The Avengers and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, which opens on May 1. They now represent Marvel's most used directors, having been enlisted to make four movies for the studio. Whedon has only directed the two Avengers films while Jon Favreau took charge of two Iron Man movies. The Ohio-born brothers are among the most sought after directors on the planet and they're also attached to The Gray Man as well as a male-orientated Ghostbusters movie for Sony (probably with Channing Tatum in the lead).

Joss Whedon Tom Hiddleston

Looking forward, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of the decade's most anticipated films, mainly due to the success of its predecessor. And we’ve been compelled to think back to Joss Whedon’s 2012 powerhouse superhero collective epic because of a touching email sent by Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki in the movie.

“Joss, I am so excited I can hardly speak,” begins Hiddleston, saying the first time he read the Avengers script he “grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar.” You can read the whole thing below. But our favourite paragraph goes something like this:

Joss Whedon's Mint Cornetto Salute To Ex Ant-Man Director, Edgar Wright

Joss Whedon Edgar Wright

Like a fallen soldier on the battlefield, Joss Whedon has simultaneously saluted his comrade Edgar Wright following the British director’s exit from the Ant-Man movie, and poked a jibe at Marvel, his current - and Wright’s former - employer.

The Cornetto is significant because of Wright’s famous trilogy, The Cornetto Trilogy, comprising Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. The films, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in central roles, mocked Hollywood tropes while delivering meaningful and hilarious storylines of their own.

Last week we saw the Avengers: Age of Ultron brother-sister duo Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Marvel's concept art but thanks to newly released on-set photos, we have been able to catch a glimpse of Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor Johnson as their superhero alter-egos filming an action scene in Italy, via Getty Images/Comic Book Resources.

The brand new snaps also afford us the opportunity to have a gander at the sequel's main villain, Ultron, who appeared in pre-CGI form as a sinister looking silver robot. Hilariously, the actor performing the movements of the baddie was photographed wearing a thick puffer jacker underneath his high tech silver scales and helmet; a feature that will be digitally erased when it comes to editing.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D have been a crucial element to the Marvel film universe for the past several years, they first appeared in 'Iron Man' (2008) after the credits and have since been featured in the first five Marvel movies which culminated in the release of 2012's superhero epic 'The Avengers'.

'The Avengers' depicted a gathering of Marvel superheroes that was orchestrated by the S.H.I.E.L.D to defeat Thor's half-brother Loki, from subjugating Earth. The 'Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D' act as a peacekeeping organisation but in the new television series, there will be no superhero task force, so how will they still defeat the forces of evil?

Joss Whedon Discusses Humanising Machines For 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'

The Avengers Robert Downey Jr Chris Hemsworth Joss Whedon Chris Evans Scarlett Johansson

Joss Whedon has chosen Ultron to face The Avengers in the next movie. The hugely anticipated sequel to the 2012 block office sensation is due to be released in cinemas in 2015. Filming of the superheroes film will begin next year. Whedon has discussed how he intends to make Ultron, an omnipotent machine into a character who can interact, effectively, with the superheroes. According to Entertainment Weekly, Ultron is a robot intend on acquiring power, something he will most likely almost acquire before being foiled by the Avengers. His qualities include super-strength, mind control, genius intellect and a coma ray.

Joss Whedon

Whedon, speaking to the entertainment website, said "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him, he's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch, a new character] who's a witch."

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Promises To Be More Than Avengers Spin Off

Joss Whedon The Avengers ABC

The critics got a first glance at what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D looks like yesterday, (Sunday Aug 4) when they were treated to a special screening of the first episode. And those same critics got to grill producer Joss Whedon afterwards.

The show - created for ABC by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen – is set in the same universe as creations like Iron Man; it contains the super-human criminals that S.H.I.E.L.D will have to battle each week and takes place after The Avengers’ Battle of New York.

"Every week it's not going to be some new hero," Whedon explains. "There could be a device, there could be a mystery.” The show will focus on characters who aren’t blessed (or cursed) with superpowers, rather it will look at the intricacies of teamwork and how the group work together to bring down the threat.
