Joss Whedon To Direct Stand-Alone 'Batgirl' Movie

Joss Whedon

Superhero movie director Joss Whedon is set to bring Batgirl to the big screen for the first time, in a stand-alone movie that will fit in the DC cinematic universe.

While no casting decisions or release dates yet decided upon, Variety reported on Thursday (March 30th) that Whedon is set to write, direct and produce the film for Warner Bros.

It will mark the first time that Batgirl has ever appeared in a central role in a feature film, after her character was first introduced in the DC comic book universe in the 1960s. Batgirl is the alter ego of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Batman’s ally Commissioner James Gordon.

Joss Whedon Reflects As We Celebrate 20 Years Since Buffy Summers First Hit Our Screens

Joss Whedon Sarah Michelle Gellar Buffy The Vampire Slayer

It's been 20 years since 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' first hit our screens, and the Joss Whedon classic still has a huge fandom and a lasting legacy 14 years after it ended. It was the show that first brought vampires to the small screen in a contemporary setting and was a cornerstone in the creation of bad-ass female TV characters.

Sarah Michelle GellarSarah Michelle Gellar starred in 'Buffy'

Creator Joss has taken this 20 year anniversary to reflect on each of the seven seasons of the phenomenal show; a show that spawned an equally popular spin-off, 'Angel', and propelled Sarah Michelle Gellar to international fame. The idea for the show, which started out as a box office flop of the same name in 1992, came to Joss when he grew tired of trite 80s horror films.

Joss Whedon Explains He Felt Like "Miserable Failure" When 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' Was Released

Joss Whedon Mark Ruffalo

A year after he guided the massive Avengers: Age of Ultron to the big screen and washed his hands once and for all of blockbuster sequels, director Joss Whedon has at last spoken about his negative reaction to the Marvel movie’s release at the time.

When the superhero sequel was released in May last year, many fans initially reacted with indifference to the movie in comparison to its 2012 predecessor The Avengers. While it was far from disastrous, taking $1.4 billion in box offices worldwide, Whedon himself said some pretty negative things about the project during the subsequent press tour.

Before 'Batman V Superman', Wonder Woman's Difficult Journey To The Big Screen

Gal Gadot Zack Snyder George Miller Joss Whedon Megan Gale

Both Batman and Superman have seen various incarnations on the big screen, but in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice they will be joined by a superhero whose film debut is long overdue, Wonder Woman. The story of Wonder Woman’s journey to the big screen could be a movie in itself, as until now writers, directors and studios have tried and failed to make the heroine leap from comic books to film.

Wonder Woman’s live-action debut came in a 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby, but she wasn’t quite as comic book fans had expected. This Wonder Woman was blonde and had a very questionable costume, which featured some blue leggings and a red coat with blue and white starred sleeves.

Also, guess which movie had the biggest opening. No, really. Guess. I’ll help you out. It was The Avengers, in 2012, with $207 million. That one went on to earn over $1,5 billion worldwide. The moral of the story is that Marvel wins yet again.

So Here's Why Loki Is Not In 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron', According To Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon Tom Hiddleston Idris Elba

Did you walk away from Avengers: Age of Ultron feeling a little less than satisfied? Like perhaps there was a big Loki shaped hole in the movie and when it was all over you felt like you'd been cheated? Well if you’d been wondering why the film was sadly Loki-less, director Joss Whedon has offered an explanation which might help you get over it (a little).

Tom HiddlestonTom Hiddleston plays Loki in the Thor films.

To recap, Loki fans (and they’re a pretty hardcore bunch) were under the impression that Tom Hiddleston would appear in Avengers: Age Of Ultron thanks to a ‘spoiler’ from Heimdall actor Idris Elba. Speaking to The Telegraph in November, Elba mentioned he’d filmed a scene for Age of Ultron with Hiddleston and Thor aka Chris Hemsworth.

Marvel's "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" Trailer Debuted At SDCC And Looked Awesome, Probably.

Marvel kicked off promotion for Avengers: Age of Ultron early at SDCC and, as with everything else related to the franchise, they made a massive production of it. Director/nerd king Joss Whedon also skipped the convention, since he couldn’t fly out from London after his knee surgery.

Steady Avengers Fans, Joss Whedon Hasn't Signed On For Third Movie

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has yet to sign on to direct the third Avengers movie and is concentrating on helming the sequel Age of Ultron.

At the press junket for Thor: The Dark World, Screenrant asked Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige about Whedon's involvement in the franchise beyond writing and directing the second movie.

"It's still being determined," he replied, "All of his efforts right now are in what he's doing for us primarily, obviously, writing and prepping Age of Ultron but also in reading the drafts of the films in phase 2, watching early cuts and a) to inform him where the characters are going to end up in the beginning of Age of Ultron and also to get his input and his wisdom into all of these. But right now it's all about leading up to Age of Ultron."

After A Successful Start, ABC's Agents Of Shield Gets Full Season Pickup

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

Good news for hardcore Joss Whedon fans and those impressed with his newest show, Agents of SHIELD – the Marvel series has gotten a full-season pickup from ABC. This means that the company has bought the rights to the second half of the season, rounding out Agent’s first run to a full 22 episodes. The show is the third new fall show to get a full-season pickup and so far it’s ABC’s premiere investment.

Joss Whedon, Saturn Awards
Whedon has practically struck gold with this one.

While SHIELD opened to smashing ratings, having the best opening for a drama series in the past four years, the switch from its Thursday premiere to a less profitable Tuesday 8pm slot caused a notable dip in ratings. Nevertheless, last week’s episode averaged a respectable 7.9 million viewers, making Agents of SHIELD the second highest rated show of the hour. In addition, the show averaged 2.9 million in that mythical, oh-so-coveted by advertisers 18-49 age range.

Joss Whedon Says He Will Film 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' His Way

Joss Whedon Clark Gregg Samuel L Jackson

In the superhero show where none of the main characters have superpowers of their own, the upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already looks like it has executive producer Joss Whedon's distinctive fingerprint all over it. The filmmaker discussed his upcoming project with fellow executive producer Jeffrey Bell and co-star Clark Gregg, who plays the back-from-the-dead agent Phil Coulson in the show and in the Marvel movies, and during this talk Whedon promised that he will remained as involved in the project as much as he can, hopefully ensuring that the series will be well worth a watch.

Joss Whedon
Whedon wants the series to appeal to those who haven't seen the Avengers movie too

Whedon, who directed and co-wrote the pilot for the series, said at ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. panel in Beverly Hills on Sunday (4 August) that the show will look to focus on those ignored in the major movie epics, such as The Avengers, as it will concentrate on the fictional government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. - which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate - and the agents it has working the field alongside their super-powered allies. And despite his involvement in the follow-up to the massive success that was 2012's The Avengers, which is titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon claimed that he will try and have maximum impact and involvement on the show.

Anticipation for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been building up since the very first announcement for the show was released and one of the big milestones along the way was this Saturday’s panel held in Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con, which was set to feature exclusive preview clips from the upcoming series. When it was announced, earlier this week, that Avengers actress Cobie Smulders would be making a substantial appearance in the pilot, excitement sky-rocketed. 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D' To Hit Comic-Con With Bear McCreary As Not-So-Surprise Guest

Joss Whedon Clark Gregg

More news around Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is bound to get Marvel fans amped up for the upcoming series – this weekend at Comic-Con, Bear McCreary will be introduced as the composer for the ABC series’ pilot episode. The composer’s new assignment is in no way unsuspected however, as McCreary has been a genre favorite for years now – the genre being high-budget TV productions with grand, swooping, ominous themes. Think along the lines of The Walking Dead score. Actually, think exactly that, since The Walking Dead is, in fact, one of McCreary’s best known projects, alongside sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica.

Joss Whedon, Much Ado About Nothing
McCreary enjoyed the challenge and the opportunity to work with Joss Whedon.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McCreary had this to say about his approach: “I like to bring something unique to every project I take on, something that can immediately hook the audience and tell them what show or film they’re watching, or game they’re playing. The furious tremolo strings at the beginning of The Walking Dead main title, or the heavy percussion of Battlestar Galactica are great examples. At first glance, I was nervous that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be difficult to approach. … It ties together a cinematic universe that spans years of characters, storylines and scores by talented composers. The instant I saw the pilot, I connected immediately with the characters.”

Joss Whedon Reinvents Shakespeare With Stunning 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Joss Whedon Amy Acker Alexis Denisof Nathan Fillion

Joss Whedon proves he is more than just the guy behind The Avengers with Much Ado About Nothing, a 2012 independent romantic comedy film based on the William Shakespeare play of the same name. The movie stars Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof and Nathan Fillion and premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. It has gained stunning reviews ahead of its North American theatrical release this week.

Generally considered to be Shakespeare's finest comedy, the story follows two pairs of lovers, Benedick and Beatrice and Claudio and Hero. The former couple are witty and often proclaim their disdain for love, while the latter are young, perhaps naïve and infatuated with one another. Critics fell in love with the Whedon's reimagining of the play, "Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing is both a palate cleanser for the director and a small but savory treat for Shakespeare-starved audiences," said Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. Lou Lumenick of the New York Post agreed, writing, "Joss Whedon's fresh and cheeky adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing is a minor miracle - the first filmed Shakespeare comedy in decades that's actually funny." The Hollywood Reporter called it "one of the funniest Shakespeare films in ages," while Andrew O'Hehir of Salon.com said, "It definitely possesses that Whedon-esque nerdy energy, fizzing with humor, eroticism, booze and more than a hint of danger."

Shot in just 12 days, primarily at Joss Whedon's own residence in Santa Monica, California, the black-and-white movie hits selected theaters in the U.S. on Friday (June 7, 2013).

Joss Whedon Won't Make 'Avengers 2' Without Downey Jr. And That's A Fact.

Joss Whedon Robert Downey Jr Avengers

Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr is yet to sign on to appear in Avengers 2, it has emerged. Contractual negotiations between Marvel and the actor have been complicated by the fact that the third movie in the Iron Man franchise became the fifth highest grossing movie in history, just $100 million short of The Avengers.

Pretty much everyone - including Marvel - assumed Downey would be turning in for work on Avengers 2 given the huge success of the first film, though nothing has been signed. In conversation with the Daily Beast, director Joss Whedon made it clear he would not begin production on the sequel without his leading man, saying, "He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I'll be called upon to do that," he said, unequivocally adding, "I don't think it's in my interest, Marvel's interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can."

Of course both Whedon and Downey Jr would make an ABSOLUTE FORTUNE from Avengers 2, though the actor's standing as (probably) the most bankable star in the world right now is muddying a deal. Nevertheless, Whedon remained upbeat, saying, "I think everything will be fine."

Joss Whedon To Bring His Own Twist To Modern Update Of Much Ado About Nothing

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has already etched himself into geek folklore with his work on the spectacular movie version of The Avengers and the über popular TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, however the movie-maker is so much more than a fanboy's best friend as he looks to prove in his re-telling of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

The filmaker sat down for a chat with the The Daily Beast along with the film's star Clark Gregg to talk Much Ado About Nothing, with the chummy pair discussing the unusual filming method adopted by Joss for the film, working with some of his long-time regulars (like Clark) and how his life has changed since The Avengers, making his latest film's back-to-basics approach all the more enjoyable.

The whole film was shot at Joss' own home, with the Toy Story screenplay writer enlisting the help of his friends and former co-workers for the black and white film. He said, "So I had this party and was like: "Hi, how are you doing? What are you doing for, say, the next three weeks?" I had to get all my ducks in a row before going forward."

The First Full 'Agents Of SHIELD' Trailer Promises Action By The Bucket Load

Joss Whedon Clark Gregg

Anyone else's heart break after Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson died on The Avengers? Well good news if it did because Agent Coulson didn't really die and Gregg's character is taking a staring role in the new ABC series Agents of SHIELD. But wait, there's more good news, because the first full-length trailer for the Marvel movie spin-off series has been released online, and it looks awesome.

Set in the same universe as it's movie brethren, Agents of SHIELD (which stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Department) will follow the not so super agents who work behind the scenes and side by side with their super-powered heroes in a post-Avengers set world. As well as Gregg, the cast also features Chloe Bennett (Nashville), Iain de Caestecker (Adam Barlow on Coronation Street), J. August Richards (Angel) and judging by a clip from the trailer, we might also have Coby Smulders' Agent Maria Hill on board too.

ABC Ditches Dancing For Joss Whedon's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D [Trailer]

ABC will consolidate its tired looking dance competition Dancing with the Stars into one solitary evening next season, opening up its Tuesday schedule for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D an exciting new project from Avengers director Joss Whedon. The move was announced to advertisers at the Lincoln Center on Tuesday (May 14, 2013) after ratings for 'DWTS' continued to fall.

Sharing continuity with the Avengers franchise, 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' revolves around the character or Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who oversees many of the division's field operations. Whedon has already confirmed Coulson is alive in his character, despite his apparent death in The Avengers movie. Elsewhere, Ming-Na Wen plays Agent Melinda May, an ace pilot and weapons expert, while Brett Dalton plays Agent Grant Ward, a talented but asocial man in his early 30s. Chloe Bennet plays civilian recruit Skye, a computer hacker described as "bubbly and goofy."

Joss Whedon Hints At Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch For 'The Avengers 2'

Joss Whedon The Avengers Ryan Gosling Mila Kunis

Joss Whedon has hinted that the brother-sister comic book duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could feature in The Avengers 2. "I've got these two characters, two of my favourite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act," he told Yahoo at the Iron Man 3 premiere, "They're in the movie."

Though he didn't directly reference Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch - and other siblings in the Marvel Universe include Aurora and Nothstar - the brother and sister are considered the most likely characters. Andrea and Andreas von Strucker, the villains collectively known as Fenris, are also twin brother and sister. There had been some speculation as to whether Marvel owned the rights to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (given that they're essentially X-Men chatacters) though during an interview with Hey U Guys, studio boss Kevin Feige said, "It's a little complicated. If they want to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could. So that's that then.

Despite originating in the X-Men stories, the characters have actually played a central role in many of the biggest Avengers storylines. The question now is of course, who will play the brother sister team? Ryan Gosling? Mila Kunis? Is there anyone left who hasn't yet played a comic-book hero in either X-Men or The Avengers?

Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing Has A Shiny New Trailer (Video)

Joss Whedon

The latest reboot of Much Ado About Nothing – directed by Joss Whedon – has a classy trailer for everyone’s perusal. It features lots of jazz, selected lines from the film and is shot in black and white. Watch it now.

This “indie” Shakespeare film was shot primarily at Whedon’s own home, features many of his close friends, and was made on a tight budget. It was actually filmed in less than 12 days in 2011 in-between The Avengers schedule, and was handed a special presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012. It was also selected as the closing night film for the Glasgow Film Festival 2013. Alexis Denisof who starred in the Buffy spin-off Angel and worked with Whedon on The Avengers also stars. Other reboots of the classic Shakespeare comedy include BBC TV shows in 1984 and 2005, and a 2001 Hindi film called Dil Chahta Hai, which was a loose adaptation.

Much Ado About Nothing Trailer

When Don Pedro arrives in Messina with his officers Benedick and Claudio, they meet with the Messina Governor Leonato and Claudio subsequently falls head over heels for his daughter Hero but is too shy to court her. Benedick makes it clear that he will never be married, sharing a similar feeling with Leonato's niece Beatrice with whom he strikes up a fiery relationship. While Don Pedro goes about tricking Claudio into wooing Hero and getting Benedick and Beatrice to confess their love for one another, his bitter brother Don John goes about trying to break up the peace in the group with his own callous plotting. Will a string of nasty lies destroy all harmony in the beautifully blossoming courtships, or will love be strong enough to hold it all together?

Joss Whedon's 'Romney Endorsement' Notches Up 1.8 Million Views

Joss Whedon Barack Obama

Joss Whedon's satirical endorsement for Republican Mitt Romney has notched up 1.8 million views on YouTube. The man behind The Avengers released the video over the weekend, claiming Romney has "the vision and determination to cut through business as usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to a zombie apocalypse."

Users had watched the parody over 800,000 times during its first 24 hours online, with over a million checking it out since. Though clearly joking, Whedon remains serious throughout - adding to the comic effect. "Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in health care, education, social services, reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting: all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland," he said. We're guessing this all went down a storm with the young, hip, liberal, Walking Dead watching Obama fans and Whedon is the latest Hollywood-type to come out in favour of the President, who now looks likely to secure a second term in office. The viral video shows Whedon in his home going about his normal routine, which turns out to be him making previsions for the impending apocalypse. The video has perhaps become more apt given Hurricane Sandy's devastating path through America's East Coast this week.

Last week, humorist John Hodgman tweeted a link to a video that imitates a History Chanel special on Mitt Romney's presidency (set in 2016). It shows American at war with Iran and a new economic collapse.

New York Comic Con 2012: Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson Will Return In S.H.I.E.L.D.

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

Marvel Comics were responsible for one of the highlights of New York Comic Con 2012: the appearance of Clark Gregg AKA Agent Coulson.

The head of Marvel Television took to the stage at the comic book convention, to update fans with the latest developments in the land of Marvel TV and that included the news that Agent Coulson lives on!

Clark Gregg is the first actor to have been cast in Joss Whedon’s forthcoming movie S.H.I.E.L.D; the news had the gathered throng chanting “Coulson, Coulson, Coulson,” to demonstrate their love both for the character and of course, for the actor that has played the role in a number of Marvel movies, including Iron Man, Thor and Avengers Assemble as well as the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series. A trailer of some of Coulson’s finest moments, revealed the words “An Honest Man. An Honorable Man. A Man of S.H.I.E.L.D… We thank him for his bravery.” By the time the trailer has scanned to his death scene, it read “We remember his Legacy. Always. Rest in Peace, Agent Phil Coulson 1969 - 2012.” By the time the trailer had drawn to a close, Gregg looked to be crying, according to the report from comicbookresources.com.

The Avengers Review

Excellent
Like four action movies mashed into one, it's often difficult to know where to look while watching this busy blockbuster. It takes a while to get going, but once writer-director Whedon hits his stride, the film rockets through a series of frantically entertaining set pieces.

When mischievous Loki (Hiddleston) steals the tesseract from top-secret agency Shield, director Nick Fury (Jackson) and his sidekicks (Gregg and Smulders) call in their superheroes: Tony (Downey), Steve (Evans), Natasha (Johansson), Bruce (Ruffalo) and Clint (Renner), better known as Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye. And Loki's brother Thor (Hemsworth) also turns up. But calling them a team is misleading, as they find it tricky to put rivalries and mistrust aside to save the world from Loki's apocalyptic plan.

The Cabin In The Woods Review

Excellent
The script for this horror romp is almost too inventive, cleverly combining clashing genres and playing hilariously with a range of cliches while thoroughly grossing out the audience. It's certainly a riot of fun to watch, even if it's not actually that scary.

Taking a break from her pre-med studies, Dana (Connolly) heads off to a mountain cabin with her flatmate Jules (Hutchison), their stoner pal Marty (Kranz) and Jules' muscle-jock boyfriend Curt (Hemsworth), who has invited his friend Holden (Williams) as a possible date for Dana. But they have no idea that two sardonic businessmen (Jenkins and Whitford) are managing an elaborate underground operation during which they are manipulating everything about the cabin. And it starts to become clear that, to save the world, all five young people must die in the correct order.
