Judd Apatow wants to star as the Silver Surfer.

The 47-year-old filmmaker - who's previously directed 'Knocked Up' and 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' - has revealed he would love to direct a movie based on the Marvel Comics character just so he could cast himself in the main role.

He said: ''I would cast myself as Silver Surf, just as a way to lose weight.''

Judd also offered some tips to aspiring film-makers, suggesting non-stop writing was the key to his career success.

Judd told the Guardian newspaper: ''There's only one tool: you need to sit and write. A lot. And as soon as you finish a screenplay, don't talk about it for half a decade. Just star another. The more you write, the better you'll get.''

Meanwhile, Judd also revealed the most effective way of becoming a director is to convince other people you are.

He explained: ''The best way to become a director is to just say you are a director. There are no degrees, no qualifications. Just say it's your job and then go and make something.''
