Juliette Lewis says she has ''dealt with mania'' for her entire life.

The 'Secrets and Lies' actress, whose co-star Ryan Phillippe recently revealed depression ''has been a huge obstacle'' for him since he was a child, admits she also went through a very dark time when she was younger.

Asked about his comments, the 41-year-old star said: ''I can tell you I have dealt with mania my whole life.''

She jokingly added: ''I'm gonna top his depression. I am manic and crazy!''

The actress, who romanced Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp in the past, says she managed to get her life on track by quitting drugs and now surrounds herself with positive influences.

She told PEOPLE.com: ''I quit drugs at 22. I travelled a lot, I dealt with my priorities. I have such a beautiful, strong family and friends and they are like everything to me.''

Ryan, 40, revealed earlier this week that his depression has decreased with age, but admitted he is worried his 14-year-old daughter, Ava, with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon has inherited it.

He said: ''I see it in my daughter. She has it, and I wish to hell she didn't. It's just, some people do have this pervading sort of sadness, or they're so analytical that they can kind of take the fun out of things because they think too much.''

Ryan also has 11-year-old son Deacon with Reese and daughter Kailani, three, with his ex-girlfriend Alexis Knapp.
