Christopher Nolan's hotly anticipated sci-fi epic Interstellar held its world premiere in Los Angeles this week, followed by a European premiere in London. The blue carpet events brought out Nolan and his cast, including Matthew Mcconaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and David Oyelowo. The film opens next week everywhere, and early buzz has been strong.

Unless you’ve already guessed, we’re a little bit excited for Maleficent to come out on May 30th. We can't help but let out a little shriek each time a new trailer is released or we hear some more information about the plot. Fortunately, we do already know the cast of Maleficent, so in the meantime we thought we’d check them out and question how right they are for their roles.

Some were shocked and others relieved when news broke this week that Tom Cruise has dropped out of starring in Guy Ritchie's new Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie. Like Mission: Impossible, it's based on a 1960s TV series about a secret espionage agency. Now Henry Cavill (soon to be seen as the Man of Steel) has emerged as the front-runner to replace Cruise as spy leader Napoleon Solo.

Meanwhile, Juno Temple arrived to talk about her role as a mentally disturbed young woman in the upcoming film Magic Magic. She stars opposite Michael Cera, and mentions a wrenching confrontation as her favourite scene in the film, which was screened as part of the Director's Fortnight at Cannes.

Oscar-nominee Bradley Cooper was the biggest name at the Elle Style Awards

Well there was no denying who the biggest name at the Elle Style Awards was last night, as Oscar-nominee and Silver Linings Playbook actor Bradley Cooper turned up to the UK capital of London last night dressed in a suave looking blue suit with checked tie ensemble (February 11, 2013). However he was far from the only one to turn the heads of the paparazzi as many of the great and good turned out for the annual bash which, far from what it's name would suggest, also awards leading performances in film and television.

If Looks Could Kill! Gemma Arterton Eyes Up Young Actress Juno Temple

The Hollywood glitterati must have wondered why they’d bothered to turn up for the BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday night (February 10, 2013). On a frankly dismal evening in the nation’s capital, umbrellas were commonplace on the red-carpet with publicists, media types and event organisers running around like headless chickens, hastily attempting to give the press pack their photographs without drowning the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Chastain and Helen Mirren in the cold British rain and sleet. Best pals George Clooney and Ben Affleck were seen taking shelter under the same umbrella, while actress Gemma Arterton looked absolutely freezing as she waited for up-and-coming star Juno Temple to finish working it for the cameras.

In terms of awards, it was a relatively straight-forward evening, hosted with typical panache by everyone’s favourite Briton, Stephen Fry. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi performed strongly in the technical categories – as it is expected to do at the Oscars later this month – while Skyfall won Best British Film. However, it was Ben Affleck’s Argo that took the evening’s key prize – that of Best Picture – leaving Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln to settle for Best Actor, for the peerless Daniel Day-Lewis. Best Actress went to the 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, which left Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook director David O’Russell looking quite frankly bemused.

Amanda Seyfriend is fast becoming darling of Hollywood. From humble, though hilarious beginnings in Mean Girls, she moved on to the sweeter than sweet role of Sophie Sheridan in the multi-award winning Mamma Mia!, and to playing Cosette in another extraordinarily successful musical, Les Miserables. Having played such classical or humorous roles, her starring appearance as Linda Lovelace in 'Lovelace' seems a little out of kilter, but as she told the BBC, it was a challenge she couldn't resist.

"It is risky and people did not stop reminding me of that. But I also really wanted a challenge. It appealed to me in that way," she said. Lovelace is about Linda Lovelace, the star of the 1970s porn film Deep Throat in which Lovelace played a woman skilled in "a very advanced form of fellatio," as the Guardian puts it. Lovelace became hot property in the porn market, but when she released her biography in the '80s she portrayed her life as one wrought by an abusive marriage to a man who used hypnosis to force her to make pornography. 

Clearly, Lovelace's story was a traumatic one and, while Seyfried said she wanted a challenge, she was perhaps not quite ready for the depth of the challenge that she was embarking on. "I had a hard time letting go of Linda at the end of the movie," she said. "I went places that I couldn't get out of." Also appearing in Lovelace are Sharon Stone, Peter Sarsgaard (playing Lovelace's abusive husband, Chuck Traynor), Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Chris Noth and James Franco. Reviews from its Sundance Film Festival premier have been largely positive, though quisitive. It is expected to reach cinemas in July.

Following what can only be described as a ridiculous 2012 for the miniature force of nature, Juno Temple is set for a hat-trick of film premieres at the Sundance Film Festival.

Despite only 23 (she'll turn 24 this summer), Temple has amassed an already impressive film roster, with performances to be proud of in Atonement, Dirty Girl, St Trinian's, Little Birds, Killer Joe and The Dark Knight Rises. Talking to the BBC ahead of what looks to be another busy year, she reminisces about her 2012 roles. "I got to play a prostitute, a schizophrenic, a fairy and a dead girl," she explains. "It was a good year!" Currently donning very strong tints of rouge in her hair, the starlet opened up on one of her trio movies, Horns, which stars Daniel Radcliffe as a young man who wakes to find strange growths sprouting from his temples. "It was a magic, mystical experience," says Temple. "We were filming in Vancouver in these incredible forests - and all my stuff was shot at night."

And on acting under director William Friedkin in Killer Joe, she holds special praise. "He's a master of his craft and changed the history of cinema with The Exorcist," enthuses Temple. "I had to play Dottie as as very innocent and very young, and at the same time very all-knowing. To combine those things was a challenge, but Billy helped me so much. It's a movie that I'm so proud to be a part of."

The bright lights of Hollywood and the awards that come with it can warp good people into wild-child tearaways with no grip on reality or morality. Just look at Lindsay Lohan. Just kidding, she's never won any awards, has she?

For Juno Temple - recent nominee for BAFTA's rising star award - this is a plight she's not willing to surrender to. "I'm not a Barbie doll and I never will be. I'm not really into that scene, I've partied in LA but it's not really my thing at all,' she told Metro. "I'd much rather go to dinner and a dive bar to be honest, that's more my vibe. And honestly I don't really want to be someone like that." Juno is one of a quintet of nominees, comprising four females and one male; a stark comparison to last years award which was dominated by males. "I look up to people like Cate Blanchett, 43, and Michelle Williams, 32, and you don't know anything about them apart from what movies they've got coming out and I love that," she explained. "That's what it used to be like with all the amazing greats like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and all these people. You knew them as the person on screen and you didn't know their private life."

Also nominated for the gong to be announced at the Baftas on February 10, were US star Elizabeth Olsen, Indian star Suraj Sharma, 19, Swedish star Alicia Vikander, 24, and 31-year-old Brit star Andrea Riseborough.

It was quite a different picture from last year's Bafta Rising Star Awards, where not a single female was recognized. But judges say it was a "happy accident" that 4/5 nominees are female for this year's awards. 

Juno Temple - the daughter of filmmaker Julien - has an increasingly impressive acting CV, and is coming to the fore for last year's Killer Joe. Quoted in the Independent, she expressed her delight that the prize had "gone female" adding: "It's good to redress the balance, to keep things even. When you look at the girls who have been nominated, some of their work is mind-blowing." She also praised the writers and commissioners for some unique opportunities, saying  "We are very lucky to have such diverse character roles coming our way." Another nominee, 31-year old Andrea Riseborough, said: "To even be counted amongst this, and the last seven years' rising star nominees feels utterly phenomenal." Elizabeth Olsen and 24-year old Swede Alicia Vikander complete the female contingent, while Suraj Sharma completes a worthy list of actors. 

Mark Kermode, the film critic who was part of the jury, said: "The number of female nominees was one of those things that happens. There wasn't any sense of doing it as a balance, although it's nice it's worked out like that. It's a happy accident with the emphasis on the happy."

It looks as though the news that Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne will be appearing in Maleficent may have caused a touch of sibling rivalry in the Pitt-Jolie household. Today (October 23, 2012), US Weekly have revealed that another two members of Angelina’s sprawling brood have signed up for roles in the movie, which focuses on Sleeping Beauty’s evil nemesis.

Back in August, it was reported that four year-old Vivienne Jolie-Pitt had landed the role of the child version of Aurora, the Princess. The grown up Aurora will be played by Elle Fanning. Now, it’s been revealed that Pax – aged eight – and Zahara – aged seven – will also be appearing in the live-action movie, alongside their little sister and their mum. Disney haven’t actually commented on the news but a source told US Weekly that Pax and Zahara have “smaller parts” than Vivienne and apparently won’t have speaking roles. If you’re wondering why Shiloh, Maddox and Knox have been left out of the action, then you should probably know that Shiloh was offered a part as well but “she was bored and not in the mood during the day her part was supposed to happen so she ended up not being in the film.” Kids, eh?
