Rainer Wenger is a teacher who's always strived for the best for his students, but when his students start to enquire how the German nation could succumb to the power of the Nazi's, he struggles to find the words to explain fully, instead he decides to show the students how a totalitarian government can take control. What starts out as a simple experiment - making his students stand when they address the rest of the class, walk to their seats in an orderly manner soon warps into something beyond his control.
As more and more students are taken in by 'the wave', initially he sees the project as a good teaching process, his class are paying more attention in lessons and their attitude towards school is a lot more positive, and soon even kids outside of Wenger's class are getting involved with the new practices. However as more and more kids become involved with the movement, the few students who do not wish to become involved are soon seen as outsiders and ostracised from many official and unofficial activities at school.
