Justin Bieber used Saturday night’s IHeartRadio Awards to debut a new hairstyle which has created more controversy for the 22-year-old singer. Bieber’s blonde hair has been styled into dreadlocks and the new look has caused some to accuse him of appropriating black culture.

Bieber showed off the do in a series of Instagram posts on Sunday, with one simply captioned ‘Why’. Many fans were then left asking the same question as they took in Bieber’s new look. Comments ranged from some who liked the style, others who had a ‘wtf’ moment and those who accused Bieber of cultural appropriation.

One user referenced the controversy surrounding Zendaya’s dreadlocks at last year’s Oscars and told Bieber: “People are annoyed cause when black people wear this style they are stereotyped as druggies and are “unkempt” look at Zendaya for example. She had fake dreads and she was stereotyped, But when people such as JB [...] wears them its suddenly 'the latest trend.’”

Another reminded Bieber of when he was pictured with cornrows in January and faced similar accusations. “Dreadlocks are cultural appropriation. we've taught u this before. Your hair is fine as it was,” a fan wrote on twitter.

Last year Kylie Jenner caused similar outrage when she was pictured with cornrows on Instagram. At the time Bieber came to his friend’s defence, writing: “Guys leave her alone, were all trying to figure it out and she happens to be under a microscope! I'm the first to know this. But saying she's being racist because she has her hair in braids is ridiculous."
