Over the last few years running up to his recent re-invention with his latest album Purpose, Justin Bieber has been collecting body art in the form of a large number of tattoo, totalling more than 50. However, he’s kept it all away from the face - until now.

Currently still in America as he embarks on his latest massive world tour, the 22 year old Canadian singer stopped off at tattoo parlour in New York City on Friday (May 6th) to get a small cross tattooed near his left eye, and debuted the results to his legions of fans a subtle Instagram post on Sunday.

Indeed, the choice of symbolism isn’t new for Bieber and his current album, as he recently got a large cross tattooed across his chest.

Body ink artist Jonathan ‘JonBoy’ Valena was contacted by E! News and explained the motivation behind the singer’s new tattoo: “It was a representation of his faith in Jesus and his journey with finding purpose in God.”

Apparently, Bieber and his close friend Joe Termini both got identical tattoos before heading to NYC club ‘Up & Down’ in Manhattan where the singer gave an impromptu rendition of his recent hits ‘Sorry’ and ‘What Do You Mean?’

Previously, the star had only said he would get a face tattoo when he was older. He told GQ magazine earlier this year: “Maybe when I’m really old, not super old, but maybe, like, 40s or 50s or something,” he explained. “One above my eyebrow or something small. I think if they’re done right, they could be cool, but nothing super crazy all over the face.”

Well, the move has certainly divided the Beliebers, who took to social media to give their thoughts on new ink. “Justin Bieber got a face tattoo, does he think he’s Lil Wayne or something?!” one incredulous fan tweeted, while another added, “If Justin Bieber really got a face tattoo I’m demanding a refund on the last 8 years.”
